How many times has he been dragged through hell because he wanted to believe in someone? Norman Osborn stands out, having claimed time and again that he was clean, he was back on the straight-and-narrow, he was really going to turn over a new leaf this time. How many times has Peter fallen for it? And what has he lost because of it? On the other hand, what has he gained? The exceptions seem to outnumber the perceived rule: Felicia, Dr. Connors, Ben, Kaine, and Harry... How could he ever forgive himself if he gave up on them to preserve his own life?

     In early morning, Rey had been moving along with the crowd to work. She had not expect anything wild or even unexpected to happen, but life always seemed to find a way to surprise her. Her mind was elsewhere as she was picked up without even a warning. A weight hits her on the side, and she is suddenly upward. Her stomach sinks, and she screams as she is suddenly aware that she is flying as she is being kidnapped.

     Moving out of fear and reaction rather then thinking, Rey’s hand opens and her saber flies into her palm. Her lightsaber extends, and she waves it up in an attempt to break whatever is holding her in the air.

     “LET! ME! DOWN!” She screams, as suddenly her saber swings true, and cuts through the webbing she did not know was keeping the pair of them in the air.

A brief list of things Peter Parker hadn’t considered until this very moment:

The fact that swooping in from above and pulling a girl into the sky doesn’t look great.

How Rey would react to being quite literally swept off her feet unexpectedly.

Whether or not a lightsaber can cut webbing (spoiler alert: it can).

Between the suddenly loss of webbing and the weird way he twists his body to avoid being caught by the lightsaber, they end up falling pretty fast. It’s lucky they aren’t high in the air when it all happens, or their landing would be a lot rougher.

“you must have started pretty young, then.” the guy doesn’t seem that old. “with a gaudy suit and an attitude like yours, no wonder you’re doing so well as a superhero.”

“haaah…” he wheezes out something close to a laugh, as if in realization. “i’ve always been a ‘villain’ by circumstance. you should consider yourself lucky you were allowed to become what you are–and that you can’t save everyone, though i bet you know that already.”

“C’mon, I was fifteen when I designed it! Cut me a little slack!” Although he’s trying to regain his footing in what he hopes might return to more lighthearted conversation, his heart isn’t in it. It shows in his voice, in the flatness that pervades the lowest notes as he dwells on the sour parts of this whole exchange.

Maybe it’ll help to focus on someone else instead of his own beginnings. “You’re allowed to be a hero too, y’know. Sure, maybe you were some kind of villain before, but you can always go straight. I know — big talk from someone who’s always been a hero, but I’ve seen it happen.” More than once, too.
