I'm sure this is old news, but Oswald's notes are killing me, this petty bitch! The notes for Fish are no surprise, if a little teen serial killer-ish, and unfortunately I can't quite make out what Falcone's says, but Mayor James with the dunce hat saying "oink", Bullock's saying one thing to be replaced with the kill note, the newspaper photo of Bruce at his parents funeral with "cry baby Brucie". Its so catty. It's so unnecessary. Oswald, honey, c'mon now. And then Jim's label being "Stooge" with three exclamation marks because he's Dramatique like that and Barbara's labelled "lying slut." Gurl please, it's basically the Burn Book. Seriously, spot the difference.

Give us a headcanon for Oswald
Entirely unable to differentiate between what is headcanon and what it interpretation of character motives and characterization, so have a snack.
He's my beloved bird brain. He's a genius criminal mastermind & the prettiest penguin. I have so many thoughts about him.
This isn't headcanon so much as preferred interpretations/portrayals. Penguin has syndactyly & he has a limp(waddle beloved). I prefer writing fused over unformed. I like writing disabled Penguin & I like giving him more penguin traits. He likes fish, he's a good swimmer, he has high cold tolerance. His laughs are canon bird noises & I adore it so much. I like when he has to manage his pain & his impulsivity/explosivity. He has worse pain when it isn't raining.
Oswald is asexual. Depends on the situation as to whether I think of what a specific Penguin's feelings about sex are. Could be uninteresting, a loss of power, a way to gain power, a mode of stress-relief & company, or a gross sticky noisy thing that is less fun than a good murder.
While he would be extremely singly focused on an amorous partner, he doesn't have to have those feelings for someone in order to do the actions. He could date for his public image & similar. He's a romantic, poetic, at heart, -he would still go through courting even if the relationship was false.
He has a bloodlust. Or some similar kind of intense emotion & tunnel focus. When he draws blood it is an experience for him. If he can dive into it, it is all the better. His emotions are very strong, & he has decades of experience in weaponizing them. His sanguine frenzy hasn't needed so much controlling, because usually who it is directed at is fated for death. If he draws blood outside of the murdering context, he can be a bit vicious about it. (That may or may not be a bonus to his partner.) (see:point d'amour)
He can change between calm & collected into furious & feral & fearsome & then back again in a blink. His emotions are big & intense, so he can be like flipping a switch when he changes his mind. He gets impulsively creative because of this, which makes all of his victims to be fascinating to pour over the details. He is incredible at applying knowledge to people, whether it is on their almost-corpses, or on their minds.
He's able to play into characters that are what people assume he is, which makes his true actions more surprising and unexpected when he builds up their assumptions to catch them off guard. If someone assumes he is childish or sleazy or incompetent or lecherous, he's able to read their impressions of him & orchestrate demonstrations to make them confirm their assumptions. He can pretend to be losing all while he is stealing the very shoes out from under his opponent.
He is great at making it seem like he has always had a plan. Once he has gotten his way, it will be almost impossible to tell if he was ever at a disadvantage at all. He rides the rush of success to cover his paths & make everyone at witness unable to see if he made any mistakes. He redirects attention & pieces together scraps of information to give at the least the appearance that he knew everything the whole time. It's a power trip for him, to succeed, & demoralize his opponents, & incite intense loyalty in his allies.
He loves his birds. He's got almost everything there is to know about them. He isn't going to let them be cramped or underfed or hurt. He likes fellow freaks. He can be kind with it.
I like the idea Penguin learned his mechanical skills from Riddler. I like if they change each other. But I think, he's smart on his own, he has the mind to build incredible insane inventions from nothing. His mastery comes from that collaboration though. He learns speed & efficiency & technicalities & grows from his abilities.
He's a bit of a stuffy sartorial. All his clothes are suits, his underwear is a suit. He has for certain made clothes for his birds. Perhaps also for his friends of the mammalian persuasion.
Oswald & Sofia are like siblings. They have that bickering rapport. They're bad at sharing with each other. But when they're not in the throes of their own personal issues, they're both incredibly competent leaders. They're made of the same things & full of the same sadnesses. They're both strange & dangerous & clever. They have a unique understanding of the other because they're very nearly the same. In terms of competing for power, their rivalries are unparalleled. Others may attempt or even succeed in dethroning one, but their impacts are miniscule in comparison to the effects the two have on each other.
This is all to say that when one steals a resource from the other, they fight about it like children over a toy, not as the criminal emperors they are. Both Oswald & Sofia value the importance of family. They both came to see how neither could be subordinate in the other's empire, & they're both too ambitious to share forever, but they were unwilling to cut the family ties. They'll pick on each other, but if a third makes any attempts at usurpation, they unite to regain control. Neither is entirely willing to do anything that would change the balance over into a true war. Their history & relation to each other are special, they don't want to destroy it if they don't have to.
Ozzie is selfish. He should be, it is a requirement in his line of work. He wants everything, he knows how to get it, he knows how to take care of it, he knows how to keep it, these are important skills to be the King of Gotham. He can also be too selfish, to his & others' detriment.
Oswald needs to devour his loved. He feels so big & he is selfish & needs so much, he has to have all of them all of their love. He's insatiable. He needs the quiet mornings sitting together as much as he needs to tear open their chests & crawl inside each other.
He loves being held, as trust & safety & acceptance. He loves doing the holding as power & protection & confidence.
Oswald's eyes are the sea, they're reflections more than any set hue. They could be blue, green, grey, brown even fire. They're pale but they can be dark & bright. It's about the tone over the biological.
Depending on ages, Penguin has either a bit of a mentor relationship with Cat, or she's a beloved stray who drinks his bar & steals his shinies. He can understand her. Her 'normal' is expected, he wouldn't find able to fault her for stealing or popping in & disappearing just as quickly.
Not exactly Oswald, but whenever Edward has hallucinations or nightmares of him, false-Oswald likes trying to touch. Leaning in for a kiss that turns into mist the moment their lips meet, rotting corpse hands reaching out for Ed, penguin with Penguin's face trying to feed Riddler, wet dripping hands at the back of the neck gripping the tie. Whether that's saying more about one or the other, I do not know.
He could be an incredible drag queen. I have no evidence of this, but I know that he would be the most regal & commanding & his performances would be art. He's not starved for attention so I'm not sure why, but I am convinced of this.

Redrew a scene from chapter 8 as a celebration for reaching 1k hits!

He could only hold onto the scratchy sheets as he asked, “ Edward, do you love me?”
Edward flinched but didn’t look away, “ I like you.”
“ But do you love me?”
“ I’m not sure, but….”
“ But?”
Edward tugged at the seams of his pants— he’s going to dig another hole. Oswald wanted him to. He wants to sew it up again.
“ I want to kiss you, I think,” Edward mumbled quietly, but it echoed loud, “ It’s uh— That’s… I just….”
Oswald swallowed. Heat radiated off Edward. Oswald felt cold and spread his legs at a wider angle, making some space for Edward to scoot close to him.
He held the fabric over Edward’s collarbone and tugged him closer, close enough that their noses briefly rubbed against each other. Edward exhaled nervously, and Oswald shivered as the air hit his upper lip.
Gathering up his courage, Edward quickly pecked him on the lips. Soft and quick like a fly. It was different from the peacock in Don Falcone's garden.
Oswald frowned.
He took Edward’s hand and placed it on his cheek, “ Try again. Make it last a little longer.”
Edward licked his lips nervously and moved in for a second kiss. He followed Oswald’s instructions, but his hand and lips hovered anxiously over him, barely touching him. Oswald pulled him in by the collar for a little more friction— it needed to hurt, to bruise.
Edward’s other hand came up to hold him, and Oswald allowed him. He licked Edward’s bottom lip, but there was no response, they were closed, firm and stubborn.
He dared take a peek then, and realized Ed had his eyes open. Oswald sighed, pulling away a little, “ Am I your first kiss, Edward?”
The tips of Edward’s ears turned red, “ I’m— Um— I’m sorry. I—”
Oswald held Edward’s cheek softly, “ Just… close your eyes, and... open your mouth when I lick your lips. You have to move with me, like a dance”
“ Like a dance…” Edward nodded, and his face warmed up under Oswald’s fingers. Otherwise, he regained some confidence and leaned in for a third kiss, closing his eyes this time.
Edward was stiff against him, unsure and jittery. He tried his best, Oswald could tell, but their teeth kept clashing, Edward’s glasses kept slipping to hit his head, and he felt hands hover awkwardly over his love handles, unsure of what to do, but Oswald kept him close, urging him to kiss him over and over.
Suddenly, Oswald felt a sharp sting on his bottom lip, and Edward pulled away immediately. In the mess of the moment, Edward had bit him, and his bottom lip bled.
“ I’m— I'm sorry, I uh,” Edward panicked and awkwardly used his thumb to wipe off the blood, “ I’m so so sorry.”
“ Do that again.”
“ What?”
Oswald held the back of his neck, pulling him close, “ Again, please .”
Edward nervously tapped over Oswald’s thigh before boldly, hungrily, closing the distance between. Edward did make a small hole in the lining of his pants, over his inner thigh. Oswald dug his thumb through it and pressed onto the warm skin underneath, widening the hole. As a result, Edward moaned deeply, and Oswald took the chance to lick into his mouth.
The peacock made his hand bleed that day in Don Falcone’s garden. His mother chastised him as she wrapped up his finger, but his mother was gone, and that very finger was cut off.

Ok, since I’m definitely not sleeping tonight…
Let’s talk about sublimation as a defense mechanism and why I think Edward used it to suppress his feelings for Oswald (I’m talking about s4, if you know you know 😖)
First, what does it mean?
He may see his feelings for Oswald as unacceptable , so he channels them into something more acceptable, right? Something “normal”.
He also tends to replace people in his life with lookalikes (eg: Kristen and Isabella) so replacing Oswald could be the same. He tries so hard in s3 to find someone who could fit the criteria he wants and he finally does it in s4, everything is there (the looks, the attitude). He finally can let those urges flow without any consequences.
“sublimation is considered a mature defense mechanism, because it helps people to substitute the harmful for the helpful, and function well within society”
Being with a woman is safer for him, but that’s not what he really wants, he’s just convinced that he does.

AITA for killing my best friend’s girlfriend?
Wait. Hear me out. My best friend ( 28M ) had gone through a rough patch and was admitted to an Asylum. For six months I ( 32M ) would visit him everyday and give him gifts and talk with him. He’s the only friend I have and in that period we grew close. I’m a man of power, and people only respect me out of fear or need for protection, except him who genuinely likes me even when I hated him at first. Using my connections, I got him out of the asylum and gave him a job in my mayoral campaign and helped him readjust. Through it, he showed me that people can like me and vote for me in a clean way ( even if he had to go behind my back and disobey my orders to do so ), and when I won the election, one of my ex-staff tried to kill me and he saved my life! He even nearly got himself killed. he said he’d do anything for me. Eve since my mother’s death, I never thought someone would actually care about me this much. So, I fell in love with him. He’s my one true love, and following my late mother’s advice, I should run with it. Except I was shy and insecure and kept balking whenever I tried to confess to him. When he told me he admires me, I finally found the courage to tell him, but asked him to dinner where we live so I could confess to him.
he went out to bring wine and didn’t come back because he met a woman ( ??F ) who looked exactly like his dead ex-girlfriend ( which he killed in that rough patch in his life ) and fell in love with her overnight. That’s ridiculous!
I met his new girlfriend and she was a sweet librarian. I told her about his precious stunt as a serial killer. Admittedly I wanted him for myself, but she was soft and sweet they couldn’t have lasted. My best friend would’ve killed her! But she apparently told my best friend that it’s alright and she trusts he changed now.
My best friend panicked about hurting her and I encouraged him to dump her, but he asked me to do that for him. It’s fine, really, I’m happy to end their doomed romance. I visited her to deliver her the news but she refused claiming she could show him he couldn’t hurt her! She wrote him a letter and my best friend went to dump her himself, but returned after spending the night at her place claiming he’s all fixed now and now she can’t hurt her.
So, I cut the breaks in her car and she had an unfortunate accident :)

thinking about Ed and Kristen in Gothaml
I think Ed being a lanky nerdy guy working in a precinct full of burly cop guys kind of plays into that in a way. Before seeing his interactions with Kristen we see him getting ridiculed and looked down on by the other officers, and he can’t do much about it, no?
except, with Kristen, she’s a girl she’s the records keeper she’s sweet and soft and, to him, or rather in that work environment she’s ‘weaker’. There is finally someone he could be… above in a way, and he likes that. He likes that he could have that standing.
I do bring into light the first time we see them interact. He tells her I could help you in a very sure posture, and he looks at her as if she was lesser and the way he leans over the cabinets it’s just… yeah. Interesting though from a riddler characterization standpoint, the way he would love to be, you know, the best in the room.
that scene did feel very odd for him. I can’t decide if it’s performative masculinity ( he also chases that masculinity when he tries to have very normal romantic relationships like he wants to be normal so bad sometimes ) or it’s the DID because he does seem more like Riddler in the way he talked to her but I have the feeling that they didn’t plan for Ed’s DID until later in season 1 or in season 2.
Or maybe it’s both.
I think it’s also interesting that the parts Kristen DOES find charming about him are the same parts he hid from her? Like when he’s just silly and goofy and nerdy rather than, trying to fit into that specific image of masculinity.
I do like that at least when they started dating he apologized for his behavior.
which…. Brings me to Kristen. She did say she thought he was sweet but wanted him to be less sweet sometimes. Which is quite tragic, she does have the worst taste in men ( sorry Kristen I love you but please stay away from men ), but I’m thinking more of whether she was being performative too ( having a traditionally masculine partner. I do like to think that her straightness was performative ) or whether she was traumatized from past experiences and needed someone strong she knows could protect her. Or , again, it could be booth.
There’s also another aspect of her. I did mentioned before that she’s seen as weak and sweet but that’s not really the case. She’s feisty , shes stubborn. She’s sweet for sure but she’s more layered than that. The sweetness she’s perceived us feels more 2D and fairytale like, when she’s just human. From a meta perspective, I do find it Interesting considering how her story ended. Tragic!
that makes both of them kind of interesting mirrors of each other. They could’ve been good friends, but they tried to fit into the heteronormative and traditional male female molds ( or were more pushed into it in Kristen’s case )
