+After avoiding it for a long time due to perfectionism issues, I've finally started a sketchbook. I'm using a Grumbacher 5.5x8.5in mixed media pad (so I can use markers, ink, and gouache) that has a nifty perk of allowing you to remove pages and insert them back in 👍
First page completed-- anatomy studies with a cheap black Bic (no under sketch), a Sharpie for solid black areas, and alcohol marker for highlighting. I'm looking forward to filling the book with lots of doodles and studies 📒

+BSTproject: Crane painterly test doodle -- I don't really like rendering character designs in this style and haven't attempted it in years, but it's a helpful method for really seeing what's going on with anatomy and forms in a design by treating it as 3D rather than 2D. I was able to refine some details better this way. The shading is muddy in areas and it's not the greatest, but I thought it was kind of aesthetically pleasing in a way that warranted an update post.
I recently also figured out a big mistake I was making with the edge of the skull (was making it too wide) that's been causing problems for ages, so the designs are looking much better now :)

+BST project: Two concept tests of Jonathan Crane and his office/lab. This was an exercise in testing Crane's design, thinking about color palettes, practicing digital painting techniques, and working on lighting and shading. I also wanted practice on converting backgrounds to different lighting conditions, so I did a lamplight and moonlight version-- working vs brooding. (painted in CSP)

+BST project: All finished with the illustrations, so here's some detail shots before I post the final pieces. There are two lighting tests-- lamplight and moonlight. I needed practice on altering backgrounds for different lighting conditions. It turned out pretty well and didn't take very much time to alter :)

+BST project: Finished the mug and books, painted the lab table, and changed the bottles in the reflection (honestly the old ones were lazily done and boring to look at). Wood grain is something I've struggled with, so I used some Ghibli film references for inspiration.

+BST project: I need a faster way to paint these types of chairs because I refuse to stop drawing them XD I just need more practice. I also realized the reflection in the glass cabinet door was too big considering the distance it was from the source, so I made it smaller. The cabinet will be blurred a bit at the end to keep the focus on the foreground.

+BST project: That cabinet went through a serious ugly phase while painting, but in the end I think it turned out rather nice :) I took reference photos for lamp reflections in glass, but it still required a lot of trial-and-error tinkering. The rest should be pretty easy to paint, aside from the chemistry equipment.

+BST project: Designing Crane's office/lab and running tests on the overall palette/painting style direction I want to pursue. Feels like it's been awhile since I've designed and painted a proper background.

+BST Project: I designed the abandoned apartment Crane is hiding out in using references pulled from properties in NYC via real estate sites. I mashed together apartment layouts I liked and made a blueprint. Still, it’s difficult to grasp scale and proportion in a flat blueprint, especially when drawing backgrounds, so I made a rough 3D blueprint in CSP using primitives and a character model scaled to Crane’s 6'4" height as reference.
It's really helpful to see the whole setting like this and quickly test out camera positions. I’m excited to build more of these for other locations in the future– I had a lot of fun and they’re really satisfying to build and look at :)
Posting just some WIP teaser images for now so people can see what I’ve been up to. At some point I plan to use this model to paint an above shot blueprint with all the textures, features, and furniture as a reference for painting backgrounds.

+Riddler: View from the Abandoned Puzzle Factory – This started out as me just wanting to doodle something atmospheric and ended up as a crash course in improving how I paint cities. Also neon sign animation effects :) I wanted the piece (and Riddler) to have that “challenging mental adversary” vibe. Painted in Manga Studio EX5, animated in OpenToonz.

◽2024 MAY 01: Determined to get stuff done this week 🖊️ Had to take a detour from the main stuff I was working on to get a few other things done that were on a deadline. In the sort of mood where I want to be cryptic and not talk about projects until I'm done, so pardon the enigmatic project names listed below. Also pardon the random motivational gifs I embed here-- they do help inspire me to endure when things get tough :)

+Working on Crane's design stuff when I have the time/energy. Currently running some tests to see how the design updates handle with poses/expressions/etc. For this one I was also roughly designing Crane's lab space. I still need to add the cel shading and finish the background, but I missed having things to post so here's a WIP :)

[Video version with sound] This was an old animation project from 2017– Edward being suspicious. I decided to finally finish it as a warmup. Only the character animation had been completed back then, but the style was outdated, so after updating the frames, the rest was pretty straight forward. I was also quite pleased that after tweaking the OpenToonz ‘bubble’ particle effect I managed something reminiscent of floating dust specks :) Animated in OpenToonz, background painted in Manga Studio EX5.
