The greatest treasures of a thousand thousand nations were sent in tribute. There were Roman marbles, Chinese silks, fine works of delicate silver and massy gold, and from the land of Canada were sent ten thousand sacks of milk, and from the land of Australia was sent a Ford Falcon in okay condition without too many kilometers on it

Just a happy moment of relief probably after one too many “so you saved the world” interviews

On referring to my notes I see that it was upon the fourteenth of April that I received a telegram from Lyons which informed me that Holmes was lying ill in the Hotel Dulong. Within twenty-four hours I was in his sick-room and was relieved to find that there was nothing formidable in his symptoms. Even his iron constitution, however, had broken down under the strain of an investigation which had extended over two months, during which period he had never worked less than fifteen hours a day and had more than once, as he assured me, kept to his task for five days at a stretch. Even the triumphant issue of his labours could not save him from reaction after so terrible an exertion, and at a time when Europe was ringing with his name and when his room was literally ankle-deep with congratulatory telegrams I found him a prey to the blackest depression.
-Sherlock Holmes, the Adventure of the Reigate Squire
***
OKAY I have a headcanon about this opening, which is that Holmes and Watson had a big argument and Holmes left London in a fit of pique. He worked himself to a breakdown, crashed hard, and checked into the nearest hotel, intending to recover on his own…but some bellhop or maid was a fan of Watson’s writings and sent the telegram and then Watson TRAVELLED 500 MILES IN A DAY TO GET TO HIM anyway that’s why I drew it like that.

Our Japanese class found it funny that in common terminology "food" isn't very distinguished from specifically "rice" until it was pointed out to us that in English "meal" is "loose roughly ground grain"

the default way for things to taste is good. we know this because "tasty" means something tastes good. conversely, from the words "smelly" and "noisy" we can conclude that the default way for things to smell and sound is bad. interestingly there are no corresponding adjectives for the senses of sight and touch. the inescapable conclusion is that the most ordinary object possible is invisible and intangible, produces a hideous cacophony, smells terrible, but tastes delicious. and yet this description matches no object or phenomenon known to science or human experience. so what the fuck

dropped the walrus vs fairy question on a group of psychologists today and not only did the majority agree the walrus would be more surprising, the one with the strongest background in research responded to the ‘but fairies aren’t real’ argument with “are your beliefs so inflexible that you’ve never considered you might be wrong about what’s real and what’s not?” and honestly i haven’t recovered

I’m of two schools of thought about the Worf effect as it pertains to Dragon from the Shrek movies.
She’s set up as a big threat/main obstacle for rescuing Fiona from the castle tower but we see Shrek and Donkey manage to outmaneuver her (with some dramatic difficulty and fire— they have to use the restrictive dimensions of the castle against her)
But then dragon is instrumental in killing Lord Farquad and cowing the knights that would otherwise have overpowered Shrek and Fiona.
Then she’s put out of commission for the second movie and we’re not told why until the end that she was pregnant/tending eggs (seeing as how her and Donkey’s kids are half magical reptilian half mammal, I’m not sure if they’d be laid and then hatched or live birthed) so cheap way of getting a presumptive powerhouse out of the way until she could no longer effect the plot of the second movie— but okay.
Then comes the third movie.
Dragon got chain netted within the first few minutes of the villains attack on the kingdom. No idea if the chains were magic but the fact that they immediately cut off her ability to fly was smart and it’s obvious they’d planned to deal with her first before she could become an airborne threat.
Is that Worfing or is it something we can see as reasonable considering the plot? Dragon at most (it’s implied) fought people one-on-one in a really restrictive castle environment. I don’t think she’s ever HAD to consider an attack from above before.
I dunno. I suppose it wouldn’t be much of a plot of Dragon was allowed to solve more problems brought by the narrative.
