what is the point in worrying oneself too much about what one COULD or COULD NOT have done to control the course one's life took? surely it is enough that the likes of you and i at least T R Y to make our small contribution count for something TRUE and WORTHY. and if some of us are prepared to sacrifice much in life in order to pursue such aspirations, surely THAT is in itself, whatever the outcome, cause for PRIDE and CONTENTMENT.

Newt could be brusque sometimes in that particular Newt way of his, harmless, but as direct as a fist clipping the chin, surprising enough to stun, but not enough to hurt. When it isn’t aimed at Molly it makes him laugh with delight, and when it is—well, it still makes him laugh, but he laughs at everything ( life’s much more fun when you do ). This is one of those rare times where that earnestness pops Molly’s words right back into his mouth, cheeks and ears heathering a faint magenta.
The circus was family, but Newt is his friend, and that is a choice both of them have made, Molly thinks, childishly pleased and cowed by the realization all over again. The very tip of his tail jingles as it metronomes back and forth.
“I know,” Molly says with a rare gentleness. Not so rare these days, around Newt, he supposes. Lies are safety, but he’s learning that he’s safe here too. He pauses.
“Not how I expected you’d find out,” he admits with a sheepish grin as he perches on the edge of the wizard’s table. It’s bare now, copies of his book snapped up eagerly by witches and wizards alike. It’d been a treat to watch Newt field their deeply absurd questions about the creatures therein, their fascination both palpable and heady. A copy of Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them is heavy in Molly’s hands, and it’s a bloody gorgeous thing, leathered and embossed, the edges of the pages gilded in gold. Molly holds it reverently—that is to say, a bit scared, a bit honored, very awed—keeps looking down at it and tracing the letters of the title, the corners of his mouth crooking inexplicably.
Which he can read, thank you very much, he simply…can’t read much more of it.
He’s not particularly embarrassed by that. The print is small and a little complicated, though digestible, he imagines, for most people without his set of issues. Plenty of other things to do in life than spend it with his nose stuck in a book, and it’s not like his inability has any bearing on his intelligence, and yet.
This is Newt’s book. This is Newt’s bloody life in his hands, coming together after he broke his back for it, risked his life and career for it. It’s a testament to how much he loves these beasties of his, from the most minuscule and obnoxious, to the sharpest taloned and most dangerous, and gods above, Molly has never been one for apologies, but the compulsion scratches up his throat when the scant light catches the foiled script of Newt’s name. Embarrassment is alien to him, but he’s embarrassed he can’t do this one simple thing for his friend.
The words stick like something in his craw, but the expression he shoots Newt is plain, repentant, and for once he doesn’t bother masking it. Molly presses his lips together and thumbs the edge of the bound cover.
“I’ll learn,” he murmurs. His smile is soft, so very soft, “This’ll be the first and last book I’ll ever read. Cover to cover. Swear it.”

though jack prefers to let newt work uninterrupted ( ...unless partaking in an action AGAINST watchpoint policy ), he seeks the scientist now of his own volition, coming to him with inquiries on how to better connect with the indoraptor contained in one of the base's sublevels. "---any TIPS on how to win her over ?" he asks at one point, hoping for some insight. "...if there's anyone i'd trust to know, it's YOU." for as DIFFICULT as newt is, jack can't deny he gets IMPRESSIVE results.

sending an almost HAPHAZARD glance in the strike commander’s direction on his approach, the scientist’s attention very quickly directs itself back to the computer monitor. on the screen there’s a chart open showing the details of the TESTS he’s run so far on the indoraptor in an effort to learn more about her, as well as a smaller tab open in the corner that holds all the records that came WITH her from those who created her. as scientifically amazing as their work is, there’s something fundamentally WRONG, in his opinion, with recreating creatures of the past. more wrong is taking the genes of those creatures and engineering something NEW from them. the fact that this creature in particular had been made with intent to be a weapon to fight for and be CONTROLLED by humans… it’s downright sickening.
he hates EVERY BIT of what he’s read in the indoraptor’s files. the raptor herself, however, newt holds nothing but empathy and love for. none of this is her fault and, while the process that led to her creation is something he’s greatly against, as long as she exists, she DESERVES to be treated with respect.
“ i’ve not worked with dinosaurs before. —although, whether she can TRULY be called a dinosaur is rather up in the air, given that she was effectively manufactured and– ” tangent cut off by the look he sees jack giving him, newt purses his lips and nods. “ …yes, right, uhm. well, it will require a lot of work. poor thing was treated HORRIBLY before you got your hands on her, as you know, so she has a distinct distrust in humans. being raised in such an isolated situation as well, she doesn’t know how to engage with another living thing in a way that isn’t violent. —this, i think, we can change. with her level of intelligence, she’ll undoubtedly be able to LEARN, but it will take time. ”
since morrison has brought him to the main overwatch base, the zoologist has been working DAILY with the indoraptor, but it’s been a slower process than any other he’s faced before. she has begun to come around a bit, to be less bothered by his presence, but so far he’s only gone into her enclosure in order to interact with her ONCE. that one time, however, he did succeed in placing a hand delicately on her snout with no repercussions. she had been highly UNCOMFORTABLE, he had been able to tell that much, and he suspects she felt the urge to bite off his hand, but she HADN’T. they are making progress, it’s just… slow. requiring a great amount of dedication.
“ you want her to feel SAFE in your presence. you must be gentle, but still demand a certain amount of respect — if she sees you as weak, you’ll be considered prey. there has to be a balance, you see — rather like the balance between a PARENT and a CHILD, ” newt explains, scrolling through the data on his screen. “ she requires both discipline and affection. you have to be a comforting figure, but one she knows to NOT manipulate. ” surprisingly, he thinks that jack is actually one of the few ideal candidates for this. while he hasn’t seen the commander in action MUCH, the few times that he has, newt has been witness to him treating his agents precisely this way. if he approaches the indoraptor with the same attitude he does his employees… it’s entirely possible that he could SUCCEED in gaining her trust.
“ talk to her when you’re with her. continue working to have her respond to verbal commands rather than that horrid audio trigger. treat her with respect and kindness, show her that you are not the threat she has GROWN UP surrounded by, and she should begin to come around. ”

Maybe this was a lost family member or friend, maybe this was a sickness that isn't going away, maybe this was sinking into depression. But you can't help but remember how life was before, how life after will never be the same, and can't help but feel that nothing in the future will be able to fill the hole the past left.

on a more ic note, newt is a 29 y/o virgin and you can pry that hc from my cold dead hands. he cares far more about his work than he does about sex or anything in that vein. a proper relationship would be a bit different because of course he would dedicate time to a partner, but he has little interest in actively seeking romance and the like out — if it happens, it happens, but it isn’t something he needs to complete his life.
