And like the thought, based on the common TV tropes, is that this woman is going to mostly be a liability? Or she’s going to make dumb mistakes that Michael is going to have to clean up? Or that she’s going to be a damsel in distress?

But they don’t do any of that. Not really. Oh, occasionally she screws up, or she gets in trouble, and they make it clear that She Does Not Have Training or She Is Over Her Head or The Bad Guy is Six Feet Tall And Buff and she is probably eligible for the senior discount?

But Maddie is fucking smart. She knows if she’s being tailed. She catches on if someone is trying to blackmail her. She gets scared in dangerous situations, but she’s also very brave through her fear. She threatens people with guns; she cons her way into getting what she wants. She plays up being nervous or scared or confused to her advantage.
