Understanding The Education System Of New Zealand
Primary Education
Primary education begins with grade 1 and lasts through grade 8, with grades 7 and 8 mostly offered in separate primary or secondary schools. Most schools teach in English, but some schools teach in Maori.
Some of the schools in New Zealand are Kura Kaupapa Maori where the main language of instruction is Maori and education is based on Maori culture and values. Most of the Kaupapa Maori Kura cater to students from grades 1 to grade 8, and some (Wharekura) cater to students up to the age of 13.
Second Lesson
The secondary education system in New Zealand covers years 9 to 13 (where students are typically 13 to 17 years old). Most high school students in New Zealand attend state-funded schools known as secondary schools, high schools, colleges, or district schools.
The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is the national qualification for senior secondary education in New Zealand. Students can achieve NCEA at three levels through a variety of courses and subjects, both inside and outside traditional schools. The three NCEA levels correspond to the last three years of secondary education (grades 11-13). A student must achieve 80 credits of the National Qualifications Framework, 60 at the Certificate level, and 20 more to receive the NCEA.
Higher Education
Tertiary education is used in New Zealand to describe all aspects of post-secondary education and training. There are 36 public universities, including eight universities, twenty-one institutes of technology and polytechnics, four colleges of education, and three Wananga (Maori colleges).
聽There are also 46 industry training organizations and approximately 895 private educational institutions, including private English language schools, registered by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. Higher education in New Zealand offers courses at a variety of levels, from transition programs to postgraduate study and research.
Technical And Vocational Education
Technical and vocational training for education in New Zealand is mainly provided in institutes of technology, colleges, and private educational institutions. Several programs are also offered in secondary schools, Wananga, public schools, teacher training colleges, and some universities.
Bachelor's or University Degree
Universities usually offer tertiary-level higher education, but technical colleges, polytechnics, Wananga and teacher training colleges, and some private educational institutions also offer tertiary degrees.
Summary: School education in New Zealand is divided into primary and secondary education. After-school education is covered by higher education. Technical and vocational education is provided by technology institutes, technical colleges, and private educational institutions.
