The Rara Lake is the largest and deepest water lake in the Mugu district of Nepal. The lake is filled with fresh water whose primary inflow is the Karnali River and outflow is the Nijar River. The lake was acknowledged as a Ramsar site in September 2007 including the adjoining wetland. The approximate length, width, and depth are 5.1 km, 2.7km, and 100m respectively. The lake lies at an altitude of 2990m. The climatic condition during summer is fairly pleasant but winter is too cold. The main occupation of the people living around the area is agriculture, goat farming and extracting medical herbs and sells them. Thakur is the leading in the community. Thakur Baba’s Temple is situated in the southeast corner of the lake. Local people believe that the god Thakur shot an arrow to open the passage of the lake reducing the damage caused by flooding.

The Rara Lake is the main natural feature of Rara National Park located in Jumla and Mugu Districts of Nepal. Rara National Park is the conserved area in the Himalayas of Nepal which was established in 1976. It covers the area of square km in the Mugu and Jumla districts of Nepal. The park was specially established to protect the sole flora and fauna of the Humla Jumla Region of Nepal.

 The park is situated at an altitude range from 2,800 m to 4,039 m. Rara National Park is managed by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation and protected with the assistance of the Nepal Army. About 1070 species of flora, 51 species of mammals, 241 species of birds, 2 types of reptiles and amphibians and three species of fish are found in Rara National Park. Flora such as Rhododendron, fir, brown oak, and birch, blue pine, west Himalayan spruce, black juniper, and Himalayan cypress are found here. And fauna like musk deer, red panda, snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, Indian leopard, jackal, Himalayan Thar, yellow-throated marten, otter, dhole, gray langur, and rhesus macaque are found in the Rara National Park.

The best visiting time to the lake is September-October and April-May. Here, from December-March the temperatures fall down below the freezing point and heavy snowfall occur up to one meter, blocking the way to the lake. If you are trekking or climbing peak near the Lake then don’t forget to take your HD cameras because it really has got massive and beautiful natural sceneries.
