i swear it is physically impossible for me to read a mary oliver quote without immediately having to hold back tears. "you do not have to be good" and "someone i loved once gave me a box of darkness. it took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift" and "i don't want to end up having simply visited this world" and "to love what is mortal against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go" and "it is a serious thing / just to be alive / on this fresh morning / in this broken world" and oh fuck it's happening again

a weird thing is that we got waves of people going "who cares if its cringe or youre annoying! have fun!" but no one really learned how to accept the fact that some people will find you annoying or think your art or your work or posts or anyrhing sucks and thats ok. rather it just became a weird "if people think youre annoying theyre just morally bad. let people enjoy things!". like no i think this yes man only biome sucks and people are allowed to not like artstyles and shows and media and other things

my favorite bit of "rich people are Like That" ephemera that I picked up from my Russian literature binge was from a noble character who was complaining about his serfs neglecting their duties, specifically the duty of staying up all night long slapping the pond water in order to prevent the frogs from croaking so that the nobleman could enjoy his sleep at his country estate with its adorable pond. whenever I hear wealthy people's complaints in this day and age the majority of it automatically filters to "the fucking serfs won't slap the pond anymore and it's honestly so destructive and cruel of them to deny me my beauty sleep like this" type statements

read in 2018. the haunting of hill house by shirley jackson
hill house itself, not sane, stood against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. within, its wall continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of hill house, and whatever walked there, walked alone.

it's interesting how in the popular imagination, middle-aged and older women are often considered entitled, annoying bitches whose feminism is outdated and manners nonexistent. these women are supposedly holding back progress and just being insufferable nags and hags in general. meanwhile, many NGOs—from animal shelters to soup kitchens, from rape crisis centres to rescue dog associations, from suicide hotlines to crime victim support services—actually rely on the unpaid labour of middle-aged and older women, who are very much overrepresented among their volunteers. often, these organisations are desperate to attract more men and young people, and some even have specific programmes to reach out to potential volunteers from those demographics! in the meantime, though: need someone to wash the remnants of an oil spill off a bird's plumage? accompany a victim of human trafficking to a hearing? sort through a pile of donations to refugees? time to call those middle-aged and older women to do their unpaid and underappreciated work.
