back-to-school reminders
• don’t slack off on studying • do your hecking homework as soon as you can so its not 5 am the day it’s due and ur stressing about it cause u wasted all that time • same thing with projects and papers, don’t leave them till the last minute anymore • take time to do what u want too! do some art or go play some sports or hang out with your friends! • self care! do that shit! • seriously even if it’s little things like remembering to brush your teeth and wash your face every night! don’t forget self care! • ur grades aren’t everything! try your best and challenge yourself, but if your grades aren’t quite where you want them, it’ll be okay. you can try to talk to your teachers (they are literally there for you), do extra credit, bring up your grades next semester. it’s not the end of the world. • health comes first! if ur sick, don’t go to school! u shouldn’t be going to school feeling crappy and then probably getting others sick! I know lots of us do this and we should rlly stop. the work will be excused or you can make it up. it’ll be fine. • in the same vain! mental health also comes first! it’s health just like physical health! if you are just feeling utterly shitty, try to take an day off and recharge. it might not be a permanent fix but sometimes it can help a little at least. • you look fine! I promise! • everything will be okay. everything is okay. it’s okay.

TAKE-UP-AND-READ’S LANGUAGE LEARNING MASTERPOST
Hi all. Many of you have asked me questions about language learning and I’ve promised a big master post for a while so here it is (and I probably will update it as time goes on).
General Advice for Language Learning:
Be selective. Many people have sort of a dream of learning every language but this isn’t a reality. Pick a language and just focus on that one. One at a time. Focus on quality not quantity. Language learning gets easier as you add more and more languages (contrary to what one would think). If you spend a lot of time on your first language and go really slowly and resist that urge to add another, you will thank yourself later on because you will have a much firmer basis for your languages.
Don’t start with an Ancient Language. I’ve heard people say to learn latin first because then you have a lot of aid with vocabulary in romance languages. I don’t agree with this because learning latin does not teach you how to properly learn, use, or speak a modern language. Learn a romance language, then learn latin if you want to (then you will have all the vocabulary for latin!).
But do learn an ancient language. The above isn’t to say that learning an ancient language doesn’t help one to learn other languages, but the biggest benefit I’ve found to learning ancient languages was that it helps me organize languages and systems of grammar. If you are learning romance languages, definitely look at Latin. If germanic, check out Greek.
Learn the phonetic alphabet. And use it! Use it! Look up words (use wiktionary!). Be super meticulous with your pronunciation. Check everything. This will stop you from making bad habits at the beginning.
Pick up a Indo-European Dictionary. This seems like a very weird thing to do/a complete waste of time. This is not the case. Here is a good one. Also, get a book which talks a bit about the history of Indo-European languages, or find some info online. Learn about how languages change and morph. This will help you as you learn more and more languages because knowledge of the common ancestor of all the European languages helps you to see cognates and to understand your new languages at much more of a depth than you would if you just learned your grammar and vocabulary. (It also will help you to read more archaic forms of your languages).
For independent language learning, learn in “groups.” If you want to add a quick language using independent study after you have already learned a few, learn a similar one. If you studied French, you can easily add Italian. If you have studied German, Dutch, etc.
Take classes! You cannot teach yourself your first language. Language learning is completely different from learning any other skill. If you have never studied a language in school, don’t try by yourself. Also I highly recommend taking classes if you start a language in a different group, for example, if your first language is French and you studied German in school, don’t try to teach yourself Chinese. A course would be much easier. I also always think it is a good idea to take a class eventually in any language – it never hurts to have someone to talk to and to check your pronunciation and usage, etc. Plus it is extremely difficult (maybe impossible) to get to a high fluency level (B2 or above) without classes. (I generally aim at a low level fluency with independent study, then I go for full immersion or I take a class).
Use your language! Read articles, read the newspaper, watch your favorite cartoons in the language (italian spongebob is fantastic, trust me), write your diary in the language (read Kant in German and write notes in Italian!), talk to yourself in the language, talk to your pet in the language (italian is for horses, french for cats), etc. Anything. Just keep using it and looking up words and forgetting them and having to look them up again. Trust me, using a language and making mistakes is the best way to get it into your head (and it is safe to make mistakes in front of your cat … a bit more embarrassing in public … )
Memorise things. First of all, it is super impressive to recite Dante or Goethe at dinner parties. Second, it helps with pronunciation and vocabulary. If you memorise a passage, you learn all of that vocabulary! Pick something that interests you, a poem that you like, a play, even songs are great because they are easy to remember. Hey, I know all the lyrics to Andrea Bocelli songs ;)
Don’t learn the language the “easy way.” There has been a trend in language teaching to make it “fun” which I don’t think it helpful at all (Duolingo would be representative of this), especially for ancient languages. Just sit down and stuff the grammar into your head and get it over with. The fun stuff will come afterwards and, trust me, it will feel better to actually be able to form sentences that are eloquent and expressive, even though you had to spend all that time memorizing those stupid boring conjugations, than to have a set list of phrases to ask for coffee or to try on a pair of shoes. For ancient languages, this is even more true. Just learn those damn declensions, don’t stretch it out and learn one at a time. Trust me, it doesn’t help when you have Sallust thrown in front of you all you can remember are the little amusing latin stories that taught you the accusative case and the verb esse…
Visit the country. Okay, this isn’t possible for everyone but if you have the opportunity, go to the country where your language is spoken and actually speak it! (Even going to an immigrant neighborhood is good, usually people will find it cool that you are learning their language and help you). You are probably going to look like a moron at first but, from experience, I can tell you that nothing improves your language skills than living in a country. You learn that everyday vocabulary which you need (a formal class never teaches you how to ask if there is enough food in the appetizer to split among three people, or whether the wine is local or not…) and you improve pronunciation 100%. Pretend that you don’t know your native language and just force yourself to speak your new language. This is especially hard if you speak english because most people will politely offer to speak english (especially Germans!). Just pretend that you don’t know english and look at them like you are confused. Pretend you are Dutch. No one speaks Dutch (except Italians…).
Learn a language in a month. You can do this, especially if it is a language which is similar to another language which you know. Here is my trick. Sit down with a grammar. Learn the grammar. I don’t care if you can’t speak the language at all but learn all those damn conjugations. Learn the funny little ticks of the language. Take good notes and do a lot of drilling. Just do this. Day after day, this is your goal: learn the grammar. I like to go in the following way: articles, nouns, adjectives, prepositions, regular verb tenses, irregular verb tenses, other irregularities. Now that you have gotten all of that pain out of the way, go to vocabulary and make it fun for yourself. Do Duolingo and impress that little owl with how much grammar you know! Get a few fun game apps and just work on vocabulary. The hard part is out of the way. Now just enjoy building your vocabulary. Once you have the grammar, you have the structure. All is left is to fill it in.
General Resources:
Duolingo. Okay everyone uses this and has some sort of sick relationship with that bastard owl. Personally, I obsessively buy him those little outfits. Duolingo is a great resource, but remember that it is just a resource. No matter how many little lingots you earn, you aren’t going to be fluent. Also watch their pronunciation, it sometimes is … not great.
Memrise. Weird, LSD version of Duolingo. Also good. Probably better for vocabulary in my opinion but not as “cute.”
Conjuguemos: Not nearly as popular as Duolingo, but for me, this is the best language learning site. It drills not only fantastic basic vocabulary lists but also on conjugations. This, for me, is the most important thing. Know your conjugations, kids. They don’t have an owl but a little frog which is fairly cute.
Studyblue and Quizlet. Obvious, but I thought I’d mention them.
Mindsnacks Apps. Lots of language apps, fun little games. Good for vocabulary. Skip the grammar lessons.
Language Specific Resources:
Here are the resources that I have used to study/learn my languages. This is in no way complete, but these resources should be a good place to start. Everyone learns a bit differently, see what works for you.
Latin: Wheelock’s Latin (good, systematic grammar). Learn to Read Latin Workbook (great for drilling grammar).
Ancient Greek: Greek: An Intensive Course (this is the only Greek book, in my opinion. It is the best. The authors are geniuses, gods among men.)
French: Amsco Second Year French (out of print, I don’t care. Find a copy. This is the best French workbook).
Italian: Modern Italian Grammar. Here’s a link (Very basic grammar, but very very good and thorough (yet at times a bit overly formal) – no vocabulary though so I don’t recommend it to people who don’t already have some background in italian or who aren’t willing to go get vocabulary lists for themselves. Conjuguemos has very good lists though, if you want to supplement the book. I do recommend this though for those who want to learn Italian very quickly).
Dutch: Sorry, I don’t have a textbook for Dutch. I used the grammar from Wikipedia (don’t judge! Wikipedia can be a really good source for grammar tables!). Here is a site with some more grammar and lots and lots of amazing vocabulary.  And here is a link to a site that gives you conjugations for Dutch verbs which can be very helpful since it is a rather un-studied language.
Sicilian: Okay, this is very hard language to learn as a ‘real language’ and not just a mess of Italian-Sicilian because no one studies Sicilian as Sicilian (which is sad and we should all learn Sicilian!). Here is a dictionary and phrasebook (sorry, it is an old fashioned paper one! haha). And here is a grammar textbook (there are a few others which I haven’t used but this one seemed the best and I have found it extremely good). Here is Peppa Pig in Sicilian (with Italian subtitles). And for later on, here is a book of medieval Sicilian poetry with English on the facing page.
Arabic (for reading knowledge): There is a fantastic (free!) app (iPhone)for learning the Arabic script called TenguGo Arabic Alphabet. They also have a second installment which teaches grammar (but it isn’t free…) Here is a link to a dictionary of philosophical arabic terms for those of you who, like me, are learning arabic only for reading knowledge. Someone also made a memrise set for some of the vocabulary.
German: Sorry, I just learned German using grammar sheets (and immersion…). You can buy them here.  I also recommend the Goethe Institut Vokabeltrainer. This is a fantastic app. There is an enormous vocabulary which really will get you up and running in German. The layout is super boring but it gets the job done. Goethe Institut also has an app which is like an adventure game. It is so pathetic it is funny.
I hope that helps! Let me know if you guys have any suggestions to add to the post and have fun learning your languages!

Extra Tips on Writing a First Class Essay
During my first year of law school, I didn’t really understand what I needed to do to score a first. Through trial and error, I eventually figured out how to get an A. I have been getting firsts on essay pretty consistently in my past two years, so I thought I would share with you 5 essay tips I personally found really helpful.
(Please note that I went to a UK university, and every university/subject might have different marking criteria, but these tips can be generally applicable.)
1. Footnotes matter. Footnotes are definitely the most boring things to put together on an essay, but they are the easiest to do, so make sure you spend time on them. I used to lose points on essays because of my footnote formatting being inconsistent. A highly marked essay will always have outstanding referencing, and I now use a website called www.citethisforme.com, which lets you search the academic journal/book you are reading and automatically creates your references for you. (Full access to the site requires a fee, but I thought it was worth it because it saved me hours of work.)
2. Essay structures are half the battle. This tip is from one of my favorite law professor who gets a ballpark idea of the essay grade based on a mere glance of the essay structure. Your essay structure should give the reader an indication of what you will be writing and should be coherent.
A five paragraph essay you might have something like:
I. Introduction II. Argument #1   1. subsection III. Argument #2   1. subsection   2. subsection IV. Argument #3 V. Concluding remarks
The title of each section should be specific and not just a general description. For example, if you are doing a critique of the Declaration of Helsinki, a more specific title would be “Limitations on the Declaration of Helsinki”as opposed to just “Declaration of Helsinki.” An essay structure that is well done can push your essay to a 2:1, even if the content of the essay is somewhat flawed. A first class essay will have an excellent essay structure.
3. Make your essay look professional. Looks aren’t everything, but if you can make your paper look like a professional academic paper, why not?
An academic paper often includes:
a. a title page (with the essay title, my student number, date, word count, and my university logo in the middle) b. table of contents, listing all the sections of the essay (see #2) and the corresponding page numbers c. for a dissertation or longer essays, it’s acceptable to include an acknowledgement page where you thank professors/supervisors/whomever has been helpful to you while writing your paper d. your actual essay e. bibliography ( everything you’ve read for this essay, including works you haven’t directly cited)
4. Bibliography length: there’s a rumor in my university that the longer your bibliography, the higher the grade. From personal experience, this is a true to a point. Obviously won’t get an A if the content of your essay is bad, but a longer bibliography shows that you are well read and well informed on whatever topic you are writing on. This might help you score a few extra points.
The number of references I have will be at least 1% of the word count. So if I have a 6,000 word essay, I will at least have 60 references.
5. Use your own arguments. Often times, the different between a 2:1 and a first class essay is that a 2:1 essay contains too much summary or restatements of other researchers. While it is important to accurately restate and analyze other people’s theories and arguments, a first class essay will contain more of your own arguments where you are actively engaging in the analysis and evaluation, not just restating other people’s opinions. Looking back, I wish I wasn’t afraid of being wrong and was more opinionated, instead of hiding behind someone else’s arguments.
Thanks for reading!

you are not:
a burden: there’s a bucket of reasons why you should not feel like one. perhaps you’re overthinking, worried, or feeling down. but don’t ever feel like you’re being such a burden. you are part of the population. you are important. without you, this world would lose the opportunity to be changed in your own simple ways. you are necessary. you are loved and it’s okay to be your own priority.
a disappointment: you’re not! i’m proud of wherever you are right now. im proud of your progress; no matter how enormous or minute it might be. if you failed your test, it’s okay. if you didn’t win the competition, it’s alright. im pretty sure you did your best and it’s that part that will always matter. don’t let other people’s “what a shame” bring you down. YOU. ARE. NOT. A. SHAME. you are blooming in your own simple ways. and I am proud and happy for you. continue growing, aspiring, believing in yourself. i’m proud of you.
a weirdo: most definitely never a weirdo! if you like doing things that are quite different, that does not make you a weirdo. that makes you special and even more precious. it was such a perfect combination of atoms and dna that led to a beautiful creature that is you and oh dear god, you’re amazing. your way of thinking is creative and the way you do things is totally out of this world. you are beyond the things earthly. you are meant for greater things. and you are most definitely not a weirdo.
ugly: whoever said you were, should most definitely need to get their eyes checked. when was the last time they went to the eye doctor anyway? if there’s anything that i’d like to be, it is to be as beautiful and as bright as you, a total human version of sunshine. your eyes light up like a ray of sunlight, your lips are perfectly carved like cherries, and your noise is huge or small and it’s cute. most definitely cute like a button. and the world should be in awe every time you wake up.
not good enough: you are good enough. you should feel good enough. if somebody’s making you feel like you’re not, then that only means he does not deserve you, the brightest star light in the universe. you deserve to feel loved. your strength and your smiles make this world a better place. you are good enough: always have been, forever will be.
alone: i’m here for you, your dogs are there for you. your cats are waiting for you. your pets will always be at your back, giving sweet and soft head bumps to make you feel loved. your music playlist is there for you to blast when you’re feeling a tinsy bit down. you are never ever alone. we’re constantly caring, loving, and waiting for you. please stop frowning and crying, you are loved.
stupid: you are, as a matter of fact, really really intelligent and even smart! perhaps you’re having difficulty in understanding your math or chemistry lessons, but that’s part of the process! at least you’re learning. i’m pretty sure some people will not be able to understand it just like you. but that doesn’t equal to being stupid. you’re just learning. continue to crave for knowledge and continue to make your curiosity work. you are not stupid.
annoying: you are never annoying! just keep on talking if you feel like sharing the entire story of your life. if you want to hit me up, that’s perfectly fine too. you haven’t even said anything to make me feel uncomfortable. people would love to hear you out, to befriend you, to be part of your social bubble. no you’re not being extra annoying, friendliness does not equal to being annoying. honestly, just keep on doing you. if that’s what makes you feel happy, then you’re doing fine.

um hi, ive recently started with academic decathlon and i just have no idea where to begin with the resource guides and studying them. how do you suggest people find their start?
I started by picking my favourite subject, it’s the easiest way to ease yourself into it. Then break things down by the section. Power Guides outline all the important information you need to learn so use them as an outline in your notes. Afterwards study as you normally would, use your favourite method or try new ones. I do recommend flashcards.

While language learning apps and websites such as are plentiful online, places to practice are less easy to find! Here’s a few you can try out, none of which are limited to just one or two languages:
Chat
HelloTalk (iOS/Android): an app with 100+ languages that lets you chat with native speakers of your target language from around the world with voice + text. It’s the one most geared towards just conversation!
WeSpeke (iOS/Android): an app and website with probably the largest variety of languages at 130, with text, audio, and video chat.
Conversation Exchange: this one’s a little different, as it not only allows you to get a pen pal and has text, video, and voice, but it also lets you meet up with native speakers in your area to practice!
Speaky (iOS/Android): a web and mobile app which is pretty much social media for language learners! It has 110+ languages and you can make video/audio calls and message from your browser.
HiNative (iOS/Android): not exactly for chatting with people, but instead you can ask native speakers about their culture/language in your target language!
Read
Duolingo Immersion: lets you translate articles from your target language into your native language, or vice versa.
Readlang: read articles, books, and other texts online, with vocab support, and it will create vocab lists and flashcards based on the words you needed help with.
All You Can Read: a selection of magazines and news websites from 200 countries, offered in a wide variety of languages.
Worldpress: a directory of worldwide newspapers and magazines, sorted by country, region, and also political affiliation.
Listen
Live-Radio: a collection of thousands of worldwide radio stations in a multitude of languages.

Hello fellow students! i have been getting a lot of asks about my bullet journal lately and I decided to make a masterpost about it so I could share all of my tips and information with you guys. I hope you will find it helpful!
What is a bullet journal?
A bullet journal is a multi-functional notebook that you can use as a planner, journal, to-do list or everything else you want to use it for and it takes only a few minutes a day. A bullet journal is completely customisable, so you can find out what system works for you. That way you can be as productive as you want to be and because you have written down your tasks that you need to do, it gives you a sense of achievement every time you tick off a box!
What do i need to start a bullet journal?
First, check out these links for some extra information: - official bujo website - great explanation
Are you still interested in starting a bullet journal? Than all you need are these supplies:
Notebook:
A notebook is the base of starting a bujo. You can use every notebook you prefer; dotted, lined, squared. Here are some common known notebooks:
-moleskine -leuchtturm1917 -Muji
Pens:
Without pens, it is impossible to write down your tasks. Once again you can use every pen you like, but here are some amazing brands:
-pilot pens -Muji -Staedler triplus fineliners -Stabilo point 88 -Zebra mildliners
washi-tape
sticky notes
ruler
glue
coloured pens
How do I start setting up my bullet journal? If you gathered all your supplies, you need to start by creating an index and a key or color-coding system. I recommend using the first or the last page as the index of your bujo, here you can keep track of the pages in your bujo. I find a key or color-coding system very useful to categorise and prioritize my tasks and events. Here are some good examples of an index, key/color-coding system:
-Index -Key -Prioritizing system
If that worked out for you, start choosing the pages you want to include in your bujo, here are some ideas:
year at a glance
habit tracker
reading list
movies or tv-shows to watch
bucket list
water tracker
washi-tape page
pen testing page
packing list
blog post ideas
quote of the month/day
gratitude log
grade tracker
favourite songs/artists
food log
yearly/monthly/weekly goals
birthdays
study/school timetables
password page
to-do lists
sleep tracker
budget/spending tracker
words you learned
photos of the week/month
weather tracker
study-o-meter
list of new school supplies
handwriting practicing
mood tracker
doodle page
homework tracker
important assignments
wish list
level 10 life
favourite printables
Pomodoro tracker
Fonts & colors
Now you’ve chosen what pages you would like to use in your bullet journal, the next step is to choose in what style you want to make your bujo. Your style completely depends on what colors and fonts you use in your bujo. You could give every week or month a different color for example, or write in a different font every month. This is ofcourse your own decision, but to help you out I chose some very inspiring pictures of the use of colors and fonts in bullet journals!
-Fonts -Banners
Inspiration
prioritizing system
weekly set-up
level 10 life
monthly set-up
 weekly set-up + year at a glance
page ideas + cool fonts
clean weekly set-up
black n white weekly set-up
daily spread
 blue weekly set-up
green weekly set-up
reading list
clean set-up for the weekend
weekly set-up with doodles
pink monthly set-up
yearly/monthly overview
purple & blue weekly set-up
a very cool to-do list
artsy weekly spread
I hope this masterpost helped you guys out a little bit and be sure to check out: http://bujobattles.com/ from @studyign for a lot more inspiration! If you would like to see any other specific masterpost; feel free to message me <3
