Thinking about how in the original book, towards the end it’s revealed that Candlewick/Romeo is a donkey owned by a gardener named Giangio, used to draw/pump water.
Then in the game, Romeo is also used by somebody (aka Geppetto) after being struck with a fever (though instead of donkey fever, it’s the petrification disease).
And Pinocchio & Romeo only reunite for a short moment before Romeo, as the book puts it, expires.

Details about the Black Rabbit Brotherhood/The Fox & The Cat, & overall Chapter 5 that reflect back to the original book of Pinocchio (Masterpost here)
Starting with the design of the Eldest Brother (seen below)
I believe that the noose around his neck is reference to the fact that in the book, the first time we are introduced to the black rabbits is when Pinocchio hanging from a tree.
Speaking of trees, there’s that one important tree in the game (you know it, you love it): The Gold Coin Fruit Tree
In the book, while Pinocchio is returning home with 5 gold coins, he meets the Cat & the Fox, who, eventually, tell him that if he plants his coins, a tree will grow and produce even more. (Obviously, a lie just so they can steal the coins later.)
Originally, I believe in an early patch of the game, the first harvest you obtain from the tree is in fact, 5 gold coin fruits. And of course, as you continue to play the game, you can choose to give the Fox/Cat gold coin fruit.
And back to the Fox & Cat in general: In the book, the Cat is going blind, that detail pretty much stays in the game. What I haven’t noticed in the game, however, is the fact that the Fox has a limp/lame leg as the book states (Fought her once, and she never mentioned anything regarding her leg)
Oh, and of course, it makes sense that you meet the Cat & the Fox right outside the Red Crawfish/Red Lobster Inn, since in the book, Pinocchio dines with them there! (And they ditch him there, just like they do before you fight the Black Rabbit Brotherhood for the first time)
And that’s all I really have I suppose! Perhaps I’ll update this post once I finally fight the Fox to figure out if she mentions she has an issue with her leg or not. Thanks for reading!

a Theory as to what might have happened to Carlo, in part of my journey in which I compare the book of Pinocchio to what happens in game.
Spoilers below, naturally. and just lots of rambling (as this is like a think-as-i-type kind of rambling)
There’s a question regarding whether Carlo dies from the petrification disease, or from being killed while out trying to become a Stalker,
but it’s quite possibly just both?
As Pinocchio goes through his old memories on the Isle of Alchemists, his last one is of the legendary stalker saying she’s “too late” and “only if”. It could be she was too late to protect him, or, she was too late in trying to deliver a cure to Carlo.
Carlo, while infected with the petrification disease, probably set out to try and become a legend himself, or perhaps just ran away as Pinocchio does in general in the book, with what little time he had left.
Regardless, I think the petrification disease spread to one specific place: Carlo’s legs.
As we see with the Nameless Puppet, and especially during the first cutscene to the fight, there is a close up on the legs in particular.
In the book, Pinocchio, after he’s run away from Geppetto & is now trying to survive on his own, ends up burning his feet off after trying to warm up by a fire. It could be that Carlo ended up losing feeling in his legs, and without being able to move, he succumbed to his illness.
Assuming the torso/the Nameless Puppet is just made from Carlo’s actual body, it would make sense for Geppetto to have to do something about the legs - aka would have to make Carlo new legs, much like Geppetto does for Pinocchio in the original text.
Continuing on if Carlo had simply run away, the only person who would know where he would have gone is Romeo, who was also fighting the petrification disease at the time and probably couldn’t leave to find Carlo. Romeo, then, must have found a way to get in contact with the Legendary Stalker, and probably asked her to go find Carlo, and give him a cure/medicine just help him in general.
Thus, coming back to the Legendary Stalker talking about being too late to save poor Carlo.
So, tl:dr; When Carlo died, he was majorly infected with the petrification disease in his legs. The Legendary Stalker was probably the first one to find him as she sought him out to probably deliver a cure or medicine.

Starting off my journey I say here with just a fun little detail imo:
In the first boss fight with the Parade Master, the beginning cutscene cuts to this shot:
In the book, there are three puppets Pinocchio meets when he goes to the Great Puppet Theater: Punchy, Miss Rose, & Harlequin. & here they are in the game! Just as cut-outs advertised at the circus!
Except for Punchy, who is also just known as a ‘Mad Clown Puppet’ you encounter twice in the game.
