And just like that, Season 32 of Dancing With the Stars comes to an end.
All the competitors returned for one final show, most participating in the opening number. There had been some concerns as Jamie Lynn had not been pictured in a photo of the returning stars and their pros posted before the finale but she confirmed that she had been sick so was waiting for medical clearance. She got it and briefly appeared in the opening number even though she didn't dance. And Barry treated us to one more shirtless dance as he and Peta danced in the audience at one point.
There was also a performance to celebrate Christmas featuring the pros along with Alfonso and Julianne. At one point, Witney Carson and Helio Castroneves joined their former partners (Alfonso and Julianne, respectively) while former winners Hannah Brown and Rashad Jennings joined in to dance with their former partners (Alan and Emma, respectively). Jason performed his song "I Feel Like Dancing" and even did a little dancing with Daniella, who then finished the dance with her husband Pasha. (The show tried to make a Big Deal about the fact that they are the first husband and wife duo in the finale but neither seemed to want to make it a Big Deal). Charli D'Amelio also performed a new routine with Mark Ballas, who was congratulated on his new baby! Charli also helped hand out the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy as well.
Before we got to that point, our finalists had two rounds of competition to go through first. The first round was the redemption dance where each couple was assigned a dance style to redo and hopefully get better scores after working with a judge. In the second round, the rulebook was thrown out the windows and the couples put it all on the line with their freestyle routines.
For one last time this season, let's take a look at how our stars did!
Alyson and Sasha: Alyson thought that Alfonso had made a mistake when he announced she made it to the finals. But she and Sasha celebrate being there and vow to work hard to the very end. Carrie Ann assigns them to dance the salsa again, which was the very first dance Alyson did for the competition. She gave Alyson some pointers and you can see how much Alyson improved from Week 1 to Week 11. I've said before that I could justify Alyson winning the trophy because she was the most improved and this proved it. For her freestyle, she combined Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lopez to do a nice mash-up of ballroom and Latin that showed off her talent and her personality. She also got in a reference to American Pie by saying: "This one time on Dancing with the Stars, I made it to the finals!" It was great to see her in the finale and she should be proud of her fifth place finish.
Charity and Artem: Carrie Ann also mentored Charity and assigned her to do the tango again. She also gave her some tips on how to connect emotionally with her dance. I don't really remember Charity's tango and usually I would rewatch the routines to comment on them but with it being the finale, I decided to just go with my memory. I do remember her freestyle. She decided to tap into her past as a cheerleader and even had help from the cast of Cheer. It was a pretty fun routine. I feel like we've had some cheerleading/sports inspired freestyles that were a little better than this one but for what it was, it was a great way to close out Charity's time on the show. Fourth place may seem disappointing to some driven like her but it's still nothing to sneeze at. She should be proud of everything she did on this show.
Ariana and Pasha: Ariana and Pasha get some coaching from Derek, who assigns her to dance the samba again. It's a fun and energetic routine, again highlighting how talented she is as a performer. Carrie Ann thought she was off the beat but Derek and Bruno thought she did it well. Ariana then had her freestyle, which I thought got off to a weak start and I didn't feel she did much dancing at first. Toward the end, she started to really shine but I was hoping for more. But I am happy that she made it to third place. She worked hard despite her injury and I wish her all the best when she makes her Broadway debut in Chicago!
Jason and Daniella: Bruno assigned Jason and Daniella to dance the foxtrot again, which they danced during Disney Week. He gave them some pointers and Jason definitely improved. This time he glided across the floor and he channeled some classic Hollywood feelings to help with the elegance of his dance. All the judges were impressed. For his freestyle, his was fast paced and was inspired by the Lindy-hop and jive. It was fun to watch and had a lot of content. Jason handled it masterfully and showed how to throw a celebration with your freestyle. I always suspected it would come down to him and someone else so I was not surprised to see him in the final two. While falling just short of the mirrorball trophy likely stung, second place is still a great honor. Way to go, Jason!
Xochitl and Val: Bruno also worked with Xochitl and Val, also giving them the foxtrot as well. And like Jason, Xochitl also channeled some classic Hollywood glamour for an elegant dance though she still also gave it a modern twist - much like her Viennese waltz. Unsurprisingly, she received perfect scores for her routine. She and Val then celebrated her culture by doing a Latin-inspired routine. Her freestyle absolutely was a reflection on herself and she shone throughout it all. Every finalist deserved the mirrorball trophy for their own reason and Xochitl deserved it for how hard she worked and how she kept topping herself week after week. Congratulations, Xochitl and Val on your win. You deserved it!
Thanks to everyone who has read my thoughts on this season of Dancing With the Stars! It certainly was a fun season that kept us guessing to the end. I look forward to Season 33 next year and hope you'll come back to find out my thoughts about that!
Have a happy holiday season if you celebrate and I hope you all have a happy New Year!

So, I've been slightly annoyed that ABC put Dancing With the Stars on Tuesdays. I am on a hybrid schedule at work and Tuesdays are one of the three days I'm in the office. So that requires getting up early, driving to work, working eight hours and driving back home. I'm sometimes tired after all that and sometimes just fall asleep when I get home. Which means I can miss the show and have to catch up on Disney+ while trying to avoid spoilers.
I fell asleep and so had to watch the semifinals after the fact. All I saw was that there was a TWIST during the show so I watched it, waiting for the twist. I honestly was anticipating a double elimination or maybe the return of the judges' save. I didn't expect no elimination so I was surprised. Maybe I shouldn't have been but I was.
But more on that later.
Our semi-finalists had to dance individually in two rounds. They performed one ballroom dance they had yet to perform in an individual round and one Latin dance they had yet to perform in an individual round. Everyone did their best with dreams of the finals in their eyes. We also had a performance from some of our pros to promote the DWTS tour that was gorgeous. It all added up to a spectacular show.
Let's see how it went!
Xochitl and Val: Xochitl and Val danced the samba to "Samba" for their first round. It was a fun routine that had some sensuality to it though still appropriate given Xochitl's age. She is still amazing to watch and I'm honestly going to miss her when the show is over. Her second dance was a Viennese waltz to "La vie en rose" and it was just the definition of elegance. Derek got choked up as he said that Len would've loved that dance. Xochitl showed her versatility and is no surprise she walked away with perfect scores for both dances.
Charity and Artem: In the first round, Charity and Artem danced a rumba to "Love the Way You Lie (Part III)" and it was her stronger dance of the night. It was likely also her strongest dance in a while and I think had more emotion than she's been letting us see. I wasn't a big fan of the end with her looking directly into the camera and felt she was a bit dead in the eyes at that point but it was just a blip in an otherwise strong routine. Charity's second dance was a quickstep to "BO$$." She started strong though I didn't really see as much emotional connection this time. And it seemed like she started to tire out toward the end. I think two dances, including a fast one like this, might have caught up with her. But she still finished in second place so kudos to her.
Ariana and Pasha: Ariana and Pasha first danced a jive to "Runaway Baby" and absolutely killed it. Carrie Ann did notice that her arm extension and follow through wasn't as fluid as it has been and she asked if Ariana has an injury. Ariana did injury her back and is in pain but dancing through it. Honestly, I don't think anyone else can tell she is in pain. For her second dance, she danced a foxtrot to "Trampoline" and it really showed her range. She went from fast and fun to slow, sensual and dreamy. Ariana was the definition of elegance as she danced with Pasha, who put some great footwork into the routine. She also is a big supporter of Pasha and said that she hoped to make it to the finals because he deserved it. That was just so sweet.
Jason and Daniella: Jason and Daniella's first dance was a Viennese waltz to his own song, "I Won't Give Up." It seemed pretty appropriate for his journey. The dance itself felt like something from a classic Hollywood movie and Jason channeled those classic actors/dancers. Their second dance was a paso doble to "Diablo Rojo," which Bruno noted has a more syncopated beat than is traditional for the dance. He and the other judges praised Jason for keeping up with it and handling the footwork perfectly. I am really glad he's made it to the finals and that he has kept fighting. I look forward to seeing what he does in the finals.
Alyson and Sasha: Amazed that she made it to the semi-finals, Alyson wanted to continue fighting to possibly make it to the finals. Sasha also took the judges' comments to heart and their first routine, a jive to "Footloose," was just a minute and a half of dancing. Alyson continues to show how much she's improved and while she may still not be at the same technical level as the others, she makes up for it with charisma. She's just fun to watch dance. (It was also cute when it seemed she forgot there had been a remake of Footloose when Sasha noted that Julianne had been in the movie). Their second performance was a waltz to "Come Away with Me" and it was just beautiful. It was simple and understated, just highlighting Alyson's talent as she and Sasha danced across the floor. If she had been eliminated, it would've been a beautiful and perfect final dance.
I also jotted down a great quote. Derek revealed that he and Alyson spoke before the show and she made this comment about the jive: "Whoever invited the jive was drunk and hated human beings."
I love it.
As I stated earlier, no one was eliminated this time. Alyson and Sasha were called safe first and she looked so surprised. She even started crying, amazed she was now a finalist. Jason and Daniella and Charity and Artem were called safe next. Daniella jumped up and down, Jason looked relieved, Artem hugged Charity and she just beamed. That left Ariana and Pasha and Xochitl and Val as the apparent bottom two and I think that's when I figured both would be safe but I thought the judges would intervene. However, Julianne declared them both safe and Ariana started crying while Val hugged Xochitl tightly. Later, Ariana told Julianne that she nearly threw up from the nerves and she was still crying as was Alyson.
So for the first time, we'll have five finalists! The finale is going to be 3 hours long and will feature all the eliminated stars in at least one group number. Jason will also perform as well as dance and we'll get to see the redemption round and the freestyles. I still think anyone can win the mirrorball trophy and that Tuesday's show will be very interesting.
I should get a chance to watch the finale live as I took Tuesday off (for other reasons) so I won't be tired when it's on. I can't wait to vote for my favorites and see who ultimately wins the trophy.
See you when I recap the finale!

It was a celebration of everything Taylor Swift in the ballroom as the stars danced to her songs in hopes of making it into the semifinals. Our show opened with a performance of "Love Story" featuring most of our pros. Several later did a routine to a slowed down version of "Style" to promote the Dancing With the Stars tour. I did not see Peta during the show so I hope she's doing alright. Barry, though, was there to cheer everyone on.
Mandy Moore (no, that that one), who has choreographed for the show before and choreographer Taylor's Eras tour, joined the panel as a guest judge. Alfonso also confirmed that bandleader Ray Chew is a Swiftie and has also worked with her before. And all the disco balls were turned to hearts for the evening's celebration. Taylor even sent another video wishing everyone the best before the competition began.
Who made sparks fly and who had their castles crumble? Let's take a look!
Harry and Rylee: I think this was the right outcome. While Harry has made some improvement, I don't think he was ready for the semifinals. However, I think he should be applauded for all the hard work he did to get to the quarterfinals. I'm glad Rylee put a lot more content in their rumba to "August" after Billy Porter's comment about Harry being a tree for Rylee to dance around after the dance off in the last show. He handled it well and maybe if the show had a few more weeks, he might've been almost as good as some of the others but it was just too little too late.
Jason and Daniella: Jason took stock of his position in the competition and decided to fight his way back to the top of the leaderboard. And he succeeded. His Argentine tango with Daniella to "Don't Blame Me" was fierce and sexy. It also included a lot of leg work that he executed impeccably. I also loved his little wink to the camera toward the end. Definitely one of the best routines of the season. I still think he's a lock for the finale, especially as he's now the only man left in the competition.
Xochitl and Val: Xochitl and Val danced a quickstep to "Paper Rings" and it was upbeat and as energetic as she is. We also got to meet her mother during their package, which was a nice treat. She's clearly Xochitl's number one fan. I also think Xochitl is a lock for the finals but she does have to be careful. Some of her kicks didn't look as clean as they could've been so she just has to watch out for her technique.
Charity and Artem: Charity hopes that winning the cha-cha dance off last week will help give her the spirit and energy to beat the others. She and Artem dance an Argentine tango to "Look What You Made Me Do." But I don't think she really absorbed Carrie Ann's comments from last week. She had flawless technique but there still didn't feel like there was much emotion behind them. I don't know if she's a lock for the finals. This was her third appearance in the bottom 3 in a row and I don't know if she could survive a fourth time.
Ariana and Pasha: Ariana feels the pressure now that Carrie Ann said she could win it all. And she delivered with her beautiful rumba to a slowed-down version of "Cruel Summer." She and Pasha continue to have great chemistry and she keeps mastering each move while putting emotion and intention behind it. I think she is a lock for the finals and still believe it could be a battle of husband and wife for the mirrorball - will Pasha or Daniella take it with their respective partner?
Alyson and Sasha: When this competition started, I thought Alyson would only make it a few weeks. I didn't peg her as the dark horse but she has proven herself to be. She has certainly come a long way since her first dance. I do agree with the judges that Sasha needs to let her dance more. It took them 30 seconds of a 90 second routine to finally get into the proper cha-cha. That needs to change. He needs to let her dance from the beginning and show off her moves and maybe they might make the finals. I think it will come down to a choice between her and Charity and either one could go home at this point.
After the individual dances, we had a dance relay. Our couples were paired up and each pairing was assigned a different dance style. One couple was selected to dance first and then the second couple danced. One judge was assigned per couple and they voted on who would get 3 extra points. So let's see how that went!
Ariana and Pasha vs. Xochitl and Val
Our first relay was between two of our best couples. Ariana and Pasha kicked things off and then Xochitl and Val took over. Both danced beautiful Viennese waltzes to "Lover" and it's amazing how different they felt. Ariana and Pasha's had a more classic and old-school feel, like I was watching a routine from a classic movie or Broadway show, while Xochitl and Val's felt more modern, like something you would see today. Carrie Ann had to make the decision and ultimately awarded the point to Xochitl and Val. It was a tough decision and I think either couple could've won.
Harry and Rylee vs. Alyson and Sasha
The second relay featured a jive to "Shakes It Off". The two couples at the bottom of the leaderboard competed in this one with Harry and Rylee going first and then Alyson and Sasha performing. Neither couple have danced a jive before so this was new for both. They seemed to do well enough but I do think Alyson was a bit better than Harry - her legs were more on point during her kicks than his. But both had plenty of content and showed off their dance abilities. However, I do think Bruno made the right decision to award the extra points to Alyson and Sasha.
Jason and Daniella vs. Charity and Artem
Our last relay featured our two "middle" couples, for lack of a better word. Jason and Daniella and Charity and Artem danced a cha-cha to "Lavender Haze", marking the second time in a row that Charity had to dance a cha-cha for extra points. She won last time and hoped history would repeat, even wearing the same style of pants as last time. But Jason brought a little more energy along with technique to his cha-cha, just inching out her excellent routine with Artem, and so Derek awarded Jason and Daniella the extra points.
So that was Taylor Swift week! Next time, we have the semifinals. Now, I have my sister's wedding this coming Saturday. I may not be able to post on time next week like I would usually. So my semifinals post may have to be combined with my finals post. I'll have to see but I wanted to give you a head's up.
I'll see you next time!
