Many Caribbean islands are so close they’re within sight of one another. That proximity means butterflies—which are a lot less fragile than they look—are often blown from one island to another. Cuba is home to more than 190 species of butterfly, many of them extraordinarily beautiful, but most are found on other islands as well. At least 35 are unique to Cuba. ©AMNH/R. Mickens

We’re saddened by the loss of artist Malick Sidibé, a chronicler of life in post-independence Mali. His photograph Look at Me! is on view now on the fourth floor as part of From the Collection: 1960–1969.

Traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony: My Ethiopian friend invited me to the book launch of her friend who wrote a book based on the years she spent living in Ethiopia. As part of the event, one of her friends prepared coffee in the traditional way: roasting the green coffee beans over fire; blending the beans, slowly heating up the water with the grinds, pouring the liquid back and forth before finally pouring out the thickened finished product into tiny cups. A laborious but loving process that took over one hour from start to finish. We got to enjoy the smooth and bold flavour of the coffee along with the sweet aroma of burning frankincense, but also soaked up warm conversations on this sunny spring day. It was so sweet to meet individuals from the Latin American, African and Asian diaspora at this event and also be reminded of the importance of slow food. The pleasure of good food is not just in the final result but very much in the process too. Taking time to savour a real cup of coffee with others is worth it.
