I am writing you from the land of the Gamecocks (I’m at a soccer game in Columbia, South Carolina). The Gamecock design is taken from two major influences: the classic school athletics logo and the combat style of Street Fighter’s Chun Li.
For my Street Fighter Smokey project, I made sure Smokey was channeling the correct amount of Street Fighter’s stoic protagonist, Ryu.
Does Ryu ever smile? Probably not, but I wanted the other moves and mannerisms to match the most famous man in fighting games, even down to a charging hadouken pose.
Oh boy! I got to collaborate with VFL Films and UT Creative, our video and graphic design departments, on a 2018 schedule release. I provided the cartoons, but the team did all of the animations/voiceover/graphic look.
It was fun studying Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and King of Fighters for inspiration. Make no mistake -- Smokey IS Ryu.
I’ve got some real-deal physical media! This is the logo for my buddies’ 2018 mini golf tournament. It’s a slight update on my 2017 full-color logo, which is a vague profile of my friend (and tournament namesake).
Anyway, sometime around July 4, we’ll be playing for the prestigious 2018 Prescott Cup. It’s kind of a joke that I printed them so early, BUT it’s partially to celebrate Jared Prescott getting a new, great job.
I drew one of our graduate assistants as some sort of media relations superhero. This stemmed from a text conversation I was having with other coworkers about some weird office Game of Thrones allegory.
Step into the wayback machine! In college at Harding University, I drew official “coloring book art” for Spring Sing 2009. Actual, real-life kids in the area colored the drawings of their choice and event organizers posted their art all over the Benson Auditorium lobby.
In a way, it was my only art show!
All the art is based on Spring Sing show themes that year, which included:
Retirement Center
Sock Hop
Car Wash
1920s Beach
Dolls and Insects (I think it was something to do with under the bed ... I dunno)
Then there are the four hosts and the jazz band.
Check it out! Here are some works in progress images ...
I designed a logo for a real-deal Weird Al convention happening next year in Denver: the Fest of Al! (Say the name quickly out loud … it’s a great pun!)
This is taken basically verbatim from a conversation I had with a coworker at a hibachi restaurant. Names and species have been changed to protect the innocent. (Also in this case: I am Kenny.)
I’m working on some Mario Kart art! Basically, it’s a recap of the epic 48-course cup my friends and I had last week. Through 47 courses on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe my buddy (Toad) and I (Koopa Troopa) were dead tied in points. Unfortunately for me, I couldn’t quite recover from a blue shell in the bell lap.
There will also be a Tanooki suit Mario lurking in the background.
We celebrated my friend Jared Prescott’s birthday with the “Prescott Cup” ... a 72-hole, 4-course mini golf marathon. I designed logos for the main “trophy” and each course championship. We even had acceptance speeches and orange jackets for the champions.
I’m still trying to get that anime look “right” for future projects, but here’s a quick drawing/trace of our resident really fast man at the University of Tennessee, Christian Coleman. He just turned pro and you WILL see him on TV come 2020 Tokyo time.
