Mother
Grief can do a lot to someone. Desperation can too. Kaguya was afraid, desperate, and terribly sad. When had everything gone so wrong? Her innocent need for peace and happiness for all had turned into a power struggle. Her desire to protect her precious people had become greed and anger. She had attempted to protect her family--from her own family even! She had rebelled against her own clan in order to create a home for herself here. However, Kaguya had soon found that in order to protect this planet, she would have to sacrifice some to maintain her power. However, as she gazed at her two infant sons, she told herself it would be worth it.
She should have known...she should have realized that her sons (half human, not quite Gods) would have reacted this way to her attempts to protect them. Where had her young and innocent babies gone? They were replaced with angry, rebellious teenagers (had she been so different when she had come to this planet?). There was no use musing on that now though, they had somehow surpassed her and now she was going to be sealed away and would no longer be able to protect them: from themselves, from those humans so prone to war… No. She had to protect them. Using the last bit of chakra she had available to her, she created another child, out of nothing. He was a bit structurally unstable and would have to cling to living materials to survive, but he would help watch over her children and ensure their safety…
His existence was pain. He had been created by his mother, but only had hints and tastes of her love. He was incomplete and knew not the full embrace of a parent. Early on he did do what Mother had asked: protect his siblings and their own. However, the hunger and craving for a Mother’s love grew in him: he missed what he never had. Of course, Mother had created him with intelligence and he knew that there were ways to bring her back.
He watched for a while, as her fully formed sons grew and then her grandsons took over and he realized that Mother had been right: War was always inevitable. These children, in every generation, would fight and bring conflict and hatred.
Yes, conflict was inevitable and he had a vague sense that Mother could end it all. So he began the process of scheming and manipulating from the shadows to bring her back. He did miss her so much and simply wanted to be officially a part of a family--to belong, to be embraced.
He watched with envy as generations upon generations of Senju, Uchiha, and countless other clans grew up with mothers who loved them; hugged them; cared for them. He had inherited his Mother’s deep love, but also her deep rage at inequality. Over the centuries this sense of injustice expanded to include himself: He deserved to be loved; those two brat brothers of his only threw their mother away… they didn’t understand--no they didn’t deserve her love. His plotting continued.

Sakura’s Inner Strength
Naruto Uzumaki was a believer. Sasuke Uchiha was an avenger. Sakura Haruno was a survivor. While Sakura never experienced an orphans life--she never had her family ripped from her. From her childhood, she had experienced bullying and small traumas. There was a conflict within her: to be cute and maintain the frailty of stereotypical femininity or to fuel the flame within her, to make a difference in the world. The ninja world asserted this conflict upon her and other kunoichi of her age. Kunoichi were generally considered weak and only fit for medical work or as accessories.
At first, Sakura was content to fulfill this role. After all, she was on the same team as the Academy Idol: Sasuke. It was only natural that she present a facade of helplessness and naivety (oh, Ino and the other girls would be so jealous!). As for Naruto, the Academy Clown, she had heard from her parents and others: “Don’t go near him. He will only mess you up. Bad luck follows him.”
However, deep down, Sakura was kind, brave, and strong. Her inner thoughts rebelled against her own weaknesses and when she had to choose between life or death in the middle of a deadly forest? She chose life. After that, she focused on earning the right to call herself Kunoichi. No longer would she depend on her teammates: after all they ended up leaving. She used her own strength and worked hard to surpass even the Hokage.

Obito Uchiha and Pain
Obito grew accustomed to pain. Being crushed by a boulder naturally causes pain. At first, he had complained constantly.
At thirteen, it was only natural to be upset: this was not how his life was supposed to turn out. The husk of Madara Uchiha assured him that there would be no pain in a perfect world.
At fourteen, Obitos physical pain was joined by the pain of seeing a former teammate killed. This pain blossomed into anger. Taking his last breath the husk of Madara Uchiha assured him that his teammate would be alive in a perfect world.
At fifteen, Obito was concentrating on orchestrating his plans to create the perfect world and his pain was only fuel for his motivations.
At sixteen, Obito Uchiha unleashed a revenge upon his former teacher: who had been unable to save his former teammate. Was the pain assuaged?
Yes, Obito was constantly in pain. He used that pain to manipulate others. To wreak havoc and chaos on the ninja world. He no longer complained but instead nursed that pain into motivation.
At age twenty three, Obito Uchiha helped Itachi Uchiha slaughter the clan that had so scorned him. The pain was still there but revenge and the thrill of murder deafened it.
Obito Uchiha sought to defeat the pain of everyday life in dreams. He sought illusions and satisfaction in the death and suffering of others. While his pain was not a lie, his life became a lie.
In the end, the pain was only cured through closure and the reunification of friends.

Fugaku and Abuse
No matter how many times they say that they love you, abuse is abuse. The Uchiha clan, almost by nature, was stuck in a perpetual cycle of abuses and indignities. Even with the relative protection of Konohagakure, many in the Uchiha sought to unlock their offsprings Sharingan through suffering.
Just like his distant uncle before him (Madara Uchiha’s father Tajima Uchiha), Fugaku Uchiha sought to unlock his oldests Sharingan by taking the four year old Itachi to a battlefield littered with corpses. The older patriarch was stuck in his ways: “This is the way of the shinobi.” In a world of war, Fugaku was inspired by Madara Uchiha’s outspoken pessimism. As long as chakra existed, as long as shinobi (Living Weapons) existed, war would exist.
He pushed his oldest and his youngest sons to excel and succeed in warcraft. Itachi Uchiha was brought up with conflicting loyalty to village and clan: Will of Fire versus Will of Father. In the end, this destroyed him and the cycle of abuse continued from him to Sasuke. Itachi had made a gamble so that his younger brother would not have to see the bodies of the battlefield, but instead Sasuke saw the bodies of his family and clanmates.
Fugaku Uchiha defended all he did as the deep love of the Uchiha. Only it wasn’t, his inability to compromise cost him, his clan, his wife, and his sons their lives.

Mikoto Uchiha
When she was younger, if someone would have told her that she would become the matriarch of the Uchiha Head Family, Mikoto Uchiha would have laughed and shook her head. Her goal was to prove herself as a kunoichi and show that she could be of the Noble Uchiha, but also be victorious in battle. After all she had brothers to take over that spot. However, the fates had other ideas for her. Her brothers tragically died in war and it was only natural that she should take the mantle of Clan head. After all, she was a descendent of Hikaku Uchiha (who had helped lead the clan after Madara Uchiha had defected).
As her role in the village and clan life grew, she ended up interacting a lot with Fugaku Uchiha, who was head of the Konoha Military Police Force. Due to their mutual high standing in the Uchiha Clan, she strategically married him, thus creating a bond between the clan head and the police force. While she did love him (as much as one could love the rough and often strict man), she also focused on what she did best: encouraging her clan and leading them to the best of her ability.
She also bore Fugaku two sons: Itachi and Sasuke. These two children quickly became the light of her life. While she and Fugaku now had co-leadership and co-parenting, she attempted to teach her boys how to love and care for each other: despite the darkness that Fugaku was so willing to observe. Even as she was dragged into her husband’s plotting--the Uchiha were being discriminated against and it had to be stopped anyway possible--she tried to bring a balanced voice to foster unity in her clan and in her family.
In the end, Mikoto Uchiha died with a smile on her face. She trusted her eldest to make a way for himself. She loved him and hoped that he could also love Sasuke in her stead.

Itachi’s Dreams
At night, when Itachi allowed himself to sleep deeply, he would dream. After the first few years, he started to consider it his punishment. After all, it was all his fault. His dreams were normally quite calm, but because he knew that they were so far away from reality, the became akin to nightmares.
They usually started benignly enough. Itachi would “wake up” in this dream world and start his day by getting dressed in casual clothing. Then he would go downstairs to the family kitchen (there had been blood all over) and sit down at the table (broken and run through with kunai). Sitting with him at the spotless breakfast table was his father and mother (broken bodies, lifeless eyes) and his younger brother (tortured, traumatized). His mother would pass him a bowl of fresh hot rice (when had he had fresh hot rice that was not greasy and undercooked?) and some fresh grilled fish (he couldn’t eat meat anymore).
Breakfast discussion consisted of Sasuke talking about his plans that day (in Itachi’s dream he was still in the academy because that was how Itachi preferred to remember him). He would always (every dream) smile up at Itachi and ask to train with him. His mother (she was dead and she would never hug him again) would smile at her husband and children and talk about her latest mission (now that Sasuke was older, she was back in the field). His father, always rough, would hum and talk about the latest clan drama (In Itachi’s dreams, there had been no coup, only minor conflicts over land and marriage contracts).
After breakfast, the family (not anymore) would part ways and Itachi would go to a training ground (now his training consisted of spars with Kisame) and meet up with a few ANBU friends (oh, how he missed that banter) and work through varying routines: sometimes sparring, sometimes kata, sometimes they would teach each other new jutsu. After the morning training sessions, Itachi would pick Sasuke up from the Academy and take him to lunch (Sasuke liked cold ramen with tomatoes) and then he and Sasuke would train (Who was Sasuke training with now?).
After that, dinner was often eaten with just his mother and Sasuke (His father was often in clan meetings until late). Itachi would read a book to Sasuke, go to his own room turn out the light…. And then wake up.

Akatsuki Hiden; Prologue; Part 2
In the valley, the wind dances over the splashing river water without a care in the world. Beside the valley, spreads a dense forest, many trees counting one hundred years or older. Those who wander through the forest are guided by faint light trickling through the leaves of these large trees.
Resting within the shelter of these trees sat a boy who, while appearing mature for his age, could not yet be considered an adult. His name is Uchiha Sasuke.
The story of Sasuke Uchiha and his desire for revenge, his overwhelming hatred, and his lonely life is a story for another time.
Currently, armed with the knowledge of his wrongdoings, with the goal of re-examining himself and his world view, he is traveling the Ninja World by himself.
It was thanks to Uzumaki Naruto that Sasuke, who was once captured in darkness, was now able to walk in the Sun. The same Sun that shines of Konohagakure. Sasuke, who had attempted to sever the bonds that connected his heart to Naruto and Konohagakure was stopped by Naruto. Thanks to Naruto, Sasuke is who he is now.
However, it was not only Naruto who helped him.
No matter how many times she was coldy pushed aside, Haruno Sakura was always there, like the sun on a warm spring day, bestowing upon his frozen heart an earnest love. Even Hatake Kakashi, Sasuke’s mentor and leader of Team 7, continued to trust Sasuke. There were countless others who helped pull Sasuke out of his darkness.
Sasuke walked through the forest, breathing in the refreshing air. Eventually, he saw a stronger light at the treeline.
“Hm? That must be the end of the forest,” he thought.
As he exited the forest and entered the light he was surprised by the scene spread before him. There, in front of him stood a young tree about his height.
“...The forests child, huh?” He murmured. He considered the sapling as the brilliant sunlight flowed over it. Not only that…
“White flowers…” At the base of the sapling, grew a thick carpet of beautiful white flowers.
The friendly wind carries with it the scent of flowers and the overall scene tempts Sasuke to make the acquaintance of the sapling. It is no small thing that viewing this scene would bring a sense of calm to the younger man. Only a while ago, Sasuke would not have gotten joy from this scene. Nor would he have noticed the existence of the flowers. While reflecting on his past oversights, Sasuke carefully avoided trampling the flowers by standing on his other foot.
“Let’s go!! Time to play paper shuriken!!”
Sasuke heard a loud and youthful voice approaching. A young boy, perhaps seven or eight, approached the sapling, weaving through the flowers. Sasuke noticed that he was wearing a striped hat.
“Fwoosh!” The boy made his own loud sound effects as he threw something with all his strength. Sasuke looked closer and realized that the boy was throwing paper folded to look like a shuriken. Of course, this was simply a harmless toy. While the boy obviously meant for the shuriken to fly straight, the strong wind blowing from the valley tore it to shreds.
“Waaaa! Look what happened!”
A little ways away another boy spoke up from where he was standing. This boy appeared to be more than ten years old. He had an intelligent face, but staggered and clutched his chest as if he was hit by a real shuriken.
“Wow! My shuriken technique actually killed you, Omitsu-nii!”
“You would like to think so, wouldn’t you Komitsu?”
From their manner of speaking, Sasuke gathered that these two boys were brothers. Omitsu being the older brother and Komitsu being the younger.
“Well, now it’s my turn,” Omitsu gathered the scattered paper shuriken that Komitsu had just thrown.
“You won’t land a hit on me!” Komitsu challenged while running away.
“I’m sorry little brother but you cannot defeat me.” Omitsu smiled at his younger brother and let the paper shuriken fly. He had skillfully thrown them so that the wind carried them towards their target. “Gottcha!” Omitsu exclaimed as the shuriken hit Komitsu’s hat.
“What the-- why do you always win?!”
“You say that like you got hurt.”
“The Shuriken hit my head brother!”
“What a shame. Oh look! There’s something at your feet.” Omitsu pointed out a paper shuriken that had fallen on top of the flowers.
“Aaahh. I wanna look like you when you throw! Omitsu-nii, what’s your secret?” Komitsu looked down at the shuriken shyly.
“Knack, hm? I guess I just have good luck!”
“Liar! You should teach me!!”
Omitsu gave Komitsu a troubled smile and stroked his head. That simple gesture and facial expression brought to the surface Sasuke’s own painful memories of his own brother and role model, Itachi.
“Why do you always treat me like a child?” Komitsu pouted and went to pick up the paper shuriken. However, the strong wind blowing from the mountains swept the small paper shuriken away. “Hey Hey, wait up!” Komitsu reached out with both hands, tracking the flying paper with his eyes. However, the paper shuriken would did not stop.
“Komitsu!” Omitsu went pale, “There’s a cliff!”
Komitsu, who had been looking upwards at the flying shuriken, suddenly realized he was on the edge of the cliff overlooking the valley. Upon seeing the bottom of the ravine, he froze.
“Komitsu!” Omitsu began to run towards where Komitsu was frozen. However, another strong gust of wind tore apart the flowers and rushed towards Komitsu, pushing him over the edge. Omitsu reached frantically to catch Komitsu, but did not make it in time.
Komitsu closed his eyes as he and the paper shuriken plummeted towards the valley floor. “Open your eyes,” said a voice that Komitsu could only imagine would be Death coming to take him to the afterlife. However, it was Sasuke who was talking.
“Wh-Who are you?” Komitsu stared at Sasuke with round, surprised eyes. This man was literally standing horizontal to the water and valley floor with his feet attached to the cliff face! He was grasping Komitsu’s clothing in his hands.
“K-Komitsu?!” Omitsu appeared at the top of the cliff and then stoped and stared at the two in amazement. Sasuke merely walked up the cliff and deposited Komitsu safely at the top. The spell of tension dropped and both Komitsu and Omitsu collapsed into each other hugging and crying.
“Komitsu! You need to be careful and actually look when you move around! It could be dangerous!” Despite his scolding, Omitsu looked deeply relieved. Noticing Sasuke still standing there, Omitus bowed deeply while Komitus mimicked his deep bow. “Thank you so much for saving my brother, Komitsu!”
Sasuke looked down at the two brothers and then held something out. He had also rescued the paper shuriken.
“Oh! My paper shuriken!” Komitsu took the toy and looked up at Sasuke with curious eyes. “You’re a ninja aren’t you? You have Naruto eyes!”
This unexpected statement caused Sasuke’s eyes to widen. He looked at Komitsu startled, “Naruto…?”
“Yeah! You’re eyes are very swirly!” Somehow, Sasuke’s Rinnegan made Komitsu think of narutomaki. “So, are you a ninja?”
As Sasuke reminded himself to grow out his bangs to hide his eyes better, he responded to Komitsu’s question: “Yeah.”
“Wow! That’s amazing! Ninja’s are so cool!” Despite being in mortal danger mere moments ago, Komitsu was swept up in new excitement. “I wanna become a ninja too! Can you teach me Ninjutsu?”
“What are you going on about Komitsu? I’m so sorry. We rarely see people outside our family so Komitsu thinks it’s all a game. Please pay him no mind,” Omitsu gently pushed the pestering Komitsu aside. However, Komitsu only moved closer to Sasuke.
“Omitsu-nii, it’s not play! It’s training!” Komitsu’s bald insistence reminded Sasuke of his own youth. Hadn’t he looked at his own brother Itachi in the same way?
“Hmmm…” Sasuke breathed out and extended his hand for Komitsu’s paper shuriken. “Okay, give it to me.”
“Yes!” Komitsu happily handed the toy to Sasuke.
Sasuke quietly turned to observe the wind blowing from the valley as well as the whirling flower petals. He took aim and threw the paper shuriken towards the flower petals. Of course, his smooth throw could not even compare to the amateur efforts of the brothers. In fact, the paper shuriken even impaled one of the whirling flower petals. Both brothers stared open-mouthed at this display of skill.
“Despite being made of paper…” Omitsu gasped. He also assumed that Sasuke had not been using chakra and only his natural arm power.
“Naruto-nii! That was amazing!” Komitsu exclaimed as he gathered up the paper shuriken and shredded flower petals.
“It’s Sasuke.”
“Hmm?”
“My name. It’s Sasuke.” As expected, Sasuke couldn’t bear to be called Naruto.
Komitsu looked at him thoughtfully for a moment, then smiled wide and laughed, “OK Sasuke-nii!”

Love and Affections
Sasuke Uchiha was not a talker. It had become a joke among Team 7 veterans as well as others in his Academy Graduate class that his characteristic “Hn.” was a code for many things. However, despite his seeming unemotional and cold front, his emotions were a deep and often turbulent well. Of course, that was made obvious when he defected from Konoha and became a rogue war criminal. His hatred and anger bubbled to the surface with a ferocity that was difficult for him to bear.
One emotion that did not bubble to the surface as much but was still there, was Love. Back when Sasuke was still pursuing the path of hatred, Tobirama Senju had pointed out the apt declaration that while many assume that the Uchiha have no emotions, this idea is quite false. Sasuke was quite aware of this as he grew to love his family. While he didn’t often show it as openly as most people would, he did show it.
When Naruto pulled an all nighter (and if Sasuke was in the village at the time), Sasuke would be there with take-out ramen. If Naruto fell asleep over a mountain of paperwork, Sasuke would drape his cloak over him.
Sasuke would wake up early and prepare a bento for Sakura before she woke for the graveyard shift at the hospital. At night, he would massage her sore shoulders. When on missions, he sent more letters to her than reports to the Hokage.
He even loved Kakashi. He knew Kakashi felt responsible for the shattering of Team 7, so he made sure to show his gratitude. He would make sure Kakashi’s fridge was stocked with healthier foods (sometimes it vexed him how unhealthy the older man could be!). He also made sure that some of the Uchiha funds somehow crept into Kakashi’s bank account: Kakashi wouldn’t have to go on any more missions to survive.
So when people said that Sasuke had no feelings to any of his team-mates, they would simply smile to themselves. They knew that no matter what, he would always be there in his quiet reserved way: loving deeply.
