Heads up, I may be axing the RvB spoiler blog.
There were only a few of us doing it to begin with and it looks like some other people are abandoning ship as well. So far, there just isn’t a ton of discussion happening past like the initial two days of sponsor viewing, and I honestly find the sideblog pretty cumbersome for that and for archival purposes.
If I start posting First spoilers here they will always be under a cut and always tagged, and I will not reblog anything that can’t be cut until the episode is public. If there’s anything else I can do to help people avoid spoilers, please let me know. I don’t want to inconvenience my followers, but I honestly don’t think the sideblog thing is going to become common practice, and I think it’s probably more practical in the long run to keep things centralized and find ways to properly hide spoilers there.
For the convenience of those who use mobile a lot, I do recommend washboard.ws.

If Carolina and Vanessa and Dylan are all onscreen together in the next episode I might just expire from sheer happiness. This is it. This is how I die.

[RvB 15.03] On Unicorn Guy
I’m probably not the first person to say this, but if I had to place a bet on Unicorn Guy being an established character, it’d be Santa, the alien AI guarding the temples on Chorus.
I’ve seen some speculation that Unicorn might be Sangheili, but his armor’s human, and humans and Sangheili just don’t have the same physiology that way. But if Unicorn is an AI, which some people have posited also, then his armor model doesn’t matter, species-wise.
The voice distortion isn’t exactly the same, but it certainly bears more similarity to Santa than it does to say, Locus, or any other other established character living or dead. It makes sense that Santa would be looking for Tucker, specifically, since the sword makes Tucker special. And Unicorn’s words about being no one except to the ones he seeks to serve makes a lot of sense for an AI construct with a specific purpose, and would be much more interesting in that context than as another “I live to follow orders” human character in the vein of Locus.
If the Reds and Blues have been missing from Chorus since they boarded the Staff of Charon, and the UNSC has been blockading the planet, then perhaps an AI was the only person who could get offworld, sent in a last-ditch effort to find out what happened to Chorus’s heroes.
Plus, he does have a red and black color scheme and we all love that color scheme shit.
Anyway, that’s where my money is.

[RvB 15.03] next ep speculation
Dylan and Jax are going to Chorus...
*presses hands dramatically to my heart* How will they get through the blockade? Will they be allowed to land? What will they find there? Will they meet Kimball? Will they meet Carolina!?
I still think we’re going to find that the Reds and Blues having been missing since they boarded Hargrove’s ship, and that Epsilon’s goodbye message was the last anyone down on the planet has heard from them.

[RvB 15.03] On location.
“I spent a fortune on this slipstream so you could hear me loud and clear.” I... what. Carlos, what. I don’t think that word means what you think it means.
Okay, so. there are a lot of things off here, besides Carlos’ vocabulary. For one thing... this is not the Mother of Invention crash site. It cannot be.
There’s no cliff.
You know, the cliff the Meta tossed Carolina off? The cliff e!Tex busted a huge chunk off of with explosive? The cliff the Meta went over anchored to a Warthog?
There’s no cliff. This cannot be the same crash site. There’s no way the ship just... magically is suddenly nestled in a valley surrounded on all sides by mountains (dare I say: a box canyon), instead of at the edge of a cliff with arctic waters below.
If this wasn’t a season that hinged so heavily on deception, false information, and visual clues (the weapons being wrong, for example), I’d be much more inclined to chalk it up to limitations of the Halo map. As it stands, I really hope this is an actual clue, because they went to the trouble of showing that very identifiable husk of the Invention, and then... no cliff. Two major characters got tossed off that cliff! It’s Important.
So I say: this is not the real crash site. This is staged.
And if Dylan’s intel on the Project led her here... well, that explains why her information is so off. “Every single former agent is either dead or missing,” sure, true enough. “Most of the disappearances happened since the Reds and Blues started their crime spree.” They most definitely did not. Every named agent except Wash and Carolina has been dead for years already.
So: staged location, false records, and Red and Blue imposters poised to ambush our girl and her trusty cameraman. At least Dylan’s catching on quick!
I can’t wait to see what she’ll find on Chorus.

Kaikaina Grif has spent her time in Blood Gulch throwing dance parties and film festivals, and organizing conventions. Her brother spent his time there napping and drinking condiments and she built an entertainment empire. When will your faves ever.

the thought of wash and carolina not knowing if they are okay TEARS MY HEART APART. ugh i want to know what wash and lina are doing right now aaaaagh
I KNOW RIGHT
and tbh I’m here for it.
I’m ready to completely forgive the truncated ending of the Chorus Trilogy if the end result of it is another opportunity for Wash and Carolina to make an impassioned demonstration of how they consider the Reds and Blues their family. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

[RvB 15.01] A Theory
So, the story goes that the Reds and Blues disappeared after the events of the Chorus trilogy, and I think that answers (in a roundabout way) our questions as to why we don’t see Wash and Carolina with them.
I think the Reds and Blues haven’t been seen since they boarded Hargrove’s ship. Whether the ship jumped out of the system, or appeared to be destroyed, I’m guessing no one on Chorus knows what became of them or where they are.
If that’s the case, then I’ll figured Wash and Carolina are still on Chorus--fighting the good fight to keep the planet safe and free, and hoping their friends are somehow still alive out there.
And if news of the Reds and Blues’ supposed spree of violence has made it back to Chorus, well. Their reactions should be interesting. Especially given the memories of Freelancer and the Sarcophagus mission that this new heist would evoke. Will they be shocked? Assume it’s UNSC propaganda? Believe the Reds and Blues would never, could never do something like that? Or suppose that whatever they’re doing, they must have their reasons?
(If you reblog, please be kind to your followers and tag appropriately for spoilers, thank you!)

RvB 15.01
New female character in the first five seconds? You know the way to my heart, Mr. Nicolosi. And yes, I know what happens a minute later, but the thing is, she’s not the only one and I always appreciate it when they remember that the background characters and extras shouldn’t be all dudes anymore than the main cast should be. So for me personally that was a great start and speaks well of later things.
Speaking of, well. That bombing shouldn’t have surprised me per se (I mean, they did set that up in about the first five seconds) but it was, imo, an effective plot point kill-off in that manner of Rogers and Cunningham from Season 12. It’s not like we were attached to these new characters exactly but I can say for myself that I was already finding them pretty endearing based on their dialogue and it certainly was a jolt to realize, welp. They’re all dead now.
Which brings us to dialogue, an area in which I think this episodes absolutely shone. I really didn’t feel like a single word was wasted--without fail, every line worked to set the scene, establish the new characters, and entertain besides. The dialogue was well-paced and well-delivered. It’s got me really looking forward to seeing how the writing plays out as the season goes on. We’ve yet to hear the established characters speak, of course, so we’ll see how that goes, but as far as the new ones, I have nothing but good to say about the writing.
We are ten months post-Chorus. I appreciate being given a concrete timeframe upfront rather than having to extrapolate later--that’s something later seasons of RvB have been much better about. I’m also very happy that this new arc is connected to Chorus and following up on the events of Chorus while still being a new story. There is so much affection for Chorus and its story and characters among the present fandom (myself included!) that I think that was a very good choice.
The people of Chorus (and possibly the Reds and Blues) are actual insurrectionists now. I could not be happier. (Regardless of what the Reds and Blues are actually doing, I think it’s safe to say they’ll be on the side of Chorus.)
I wasn’t necessarily on board with the Imposter Theory at first, but as of now it’s definitely looking plausible. Lots of people have pointed out since the trailer that the Reds and Blues’ weapons don’t seem right--Sarge not using his trusty shotgun, Tucker carrying a sniper rifle with no sword in sight. The fact that we don’t hear any of them speak, I think, only supports the idea that it’s not really the Reds and Blues we know.
Then there’s the Church-colored soldier disembarking from the Pelican. Personally, I’m not hoping Church is somehow alive (I think it’s time to let him rest). That aside, Epsilon post-season 8 has been actively disinterested in having a physical body, even bragging about the advantages of his incorporeal state, so the appearance of a physical body I think supports the theory that it isn’t him or any Church derived from him.
And at last we come to Dylan Andrews, our intrepid reporter--don’t worry, I’d never forget about our new girl. :) Making her the reporter who ran the “Colorful Space Marines” headline after season 10 was such a good decision. Not only does she have a previous story connection, she has a connection to the Reds and Blues themselves--so much so that she says with some confidence, “I know them.” She’s motivated to find out what’s happening not only as an irresistible story, but as a huge question mark that is at least a little bit personal. She wants not just to know, but to understand.
And thus far, she’s a delight. Her banter with her boss was fantastic, and one of the most entertaining bits of dialogue, though as I said above, I thought all of it was wonderful. I really enjoy the already-emerging relationship between Dylan and her boss Carlos--he’s grumpy, sure, and full of hilarious vinegar about her ambitious lead-hunting, but there’s a clear rapport between them, because Dylan doesn’t hesitate to respond with snark: “Thanks a million, honey bucket.”
Next episode seems highly likely to give us our intrepid journalist meeting everyone’s favorite party Grif down in Blood Gulch, and I can’t wait to see how that goes. (It also offers a not-unreasonable probability of this season passing the Bechdel test in episode 2, and when was the last time that happened?)
In short, I am frankly thrilled with this prologue. These days I try to come in without many expectations, preferring to see what comes and enjoy it for what it is, but this new episode is pretty much my bag in every single way, and I couldn’t be happier. I think we’ve got a fun season ahead of us, and I look forward to it.

I’m living in a world where I couldn’t get the “insurrection in the outer colonies” main storyline my heart desires from Halo 5 (despite a ton of misleading advertising) but I can get it from Red vs. Blue.
This is what I’ve been given and I’ll take it.
