When their entire relationship is toxic, but they're both so fucked up that it's actually the best case scenario, because subjecting anybody else to either of them would be a human rights violation.
The hilarity of folks on Twitter trying to be rules lawyers, confused why Matt let that moment happen because "it shouldn't have worked mechanically."
Of course he let it work. OF COURSE he did. Friends, the reason why is staring you in the face. It's because it was awesome and doing anything other than letting it work in any way would have ruined the moment. Matt was giving them a gift by saying, "I recognize the sacrifice you're making, and I applaud you for it." - that's just him being a good DM.
Imagine how lackluster it would have been if he was just like, "well, cool, she's still got 10 hp left and you're dead." In this story? In this setting? With these characters and players? Not a chance.
And thank goodness for that.
(side note: there is a world where FCG explodes and it doesn't kill Otohan and that becomes a baffling, fantastic story beat, but the only way, the only way, that works is if the lead up to that moment is a planned one where every character and player knows he's going to try to explode when he sees her. Otherwise, it would only come off as a slap in the face.)
The combination of 'unnervingly flawless self-control' with 'occasional tendency to engage in reckless, dangerous, and borderline self-destructive or death-seeking behaviour' in a character is SUCH catnip to me
I really like what the aroace community has done with pacific rim and drift compatibility. Not romantic, not platonic, but a secret third thing (punching a monster in the mouth)
I don’t even care if it’s macaroni, ramen or those little bowls you stick in the microwave. Please, I need reassurance that most of the population on tumblr WOULDN’T STARVE TO DEATH if their parents couldn’t fix them food or they couldn’t go out to eat.
