Back when I started playing Disco Elysium, my friend described it to me as a “Hull Simulator” - which really made me laugh, because feels very true in a way.

It might have been made by Estonian developers, but I think Martinaise captures the essence of British post-war seaside towns and ports better than anything else I’ve ever seen.

Much like Revachol, The UK is home to tons of cities and towns with echoes and scars of bombing and economic chaos over the years - particularly in the stretches of the north, which has long been neglected in favour of the larger city hubs and towns further south.

I think a big reason I fell in love with the game so much is precisely because of the locations of Martinaise and the wider Jamrock area. Much like in the game, lots of people call these places shitholes, but I love them dearly.

I love the cranes and the docks and the river. I love the old mines and power stations and the walls full of old bullet holes and the mish-mash of old brick and 1960’s prefab concrete that dominates so much of it.

Everyone else might think it’s shit but to me, places like this feel like home and I think theres a real beauty to them ❤️

Replaying Disco Elysium is always so good for my health because it's genuinely the only game I play that feels like a beast of a different substance on each revisit, but it's always earnest. I love when a writer abandons irony, resists the lure of detachment. It's so easy to put a barrier between yourself and the character of your art, to hide your message beneath its material rather than display it within. Disco Elysium teaches you to resist detachment, to embrace the world around you in all its mundane and absurd colors. There's never a moment that doesn't feel hard-earned under the weight of being lived. It's so special for refusing to hide the damage that brought it here.

there's just something so special about the way that kim is not judgemental about the things that are wrong with harry (his alcoholism, his memory loss, even the way he smells) and with those things he only ever shows concern or at most gentle teasing when he knows harry can take it. but he's constantly on edge with things that could be perceived as "weird" — with harry, when he shaves his face, but with himself, his pinball title and speed freaks fm and other things outside of this meticulously curated version of himself that he deems to be acceptable. but then harry makes weird jokes with him and uses offbeat language and gets morbidly silly about their job and his life and kim responds like a flower opening up in the sun because he's stumbled upon someone who's just as weird as he is and doesn't have anything holding him back from showing it. this is terrifying and yet he can't resist because the private joy he gets from participating is infinitely more thrilling than the control he's imposed over himself and his behavior
