Just watched this video, which is a very interesting analysis of Carmy’s physical expressions and how they convey his distress and emotional distance, among others… like him moving his hands and moving constantly and touching his face and hair, and how he closes his eyes when he is overwhelmed and how he avoids long instances of eye contact unless he needs to transmit important information or make a connection or say sorry. And all I kept thinking about was the table scene and how absent they are in it?
For most of it, Carmy is not moving and almost not fidgety at all, until the very end and even then is like very small movements with his hand. And his eyes are always open and searching Sydney’s. And they laugh together. And he seems so calm and still, especially when you compare him to the rest of his scenes.
AND. This video makes a point about Carmy always looking at the ground in a way of not being hopeful enough to look up. But it’s so interesting how in the table scene he looks down again, but this time Sydney is there, almost like a way of implying that even when he thinks it might all be lost she will be there to remind him there are better things coming. And their conversation in this scene mimics that as well, a sort of mutual reassurance that is soothing for both of them.
Like we already knew Sydney calms him, but wow she really DOES, to the point she even has an impact on his physical expressions of stress… and likeeee

Thinking randomly about sydcarmy, as one does, and I can’t help but wonder about Carmy’s immediate action after getting out of that fridge. Because no matter how many scenarios I imagine, what’s for sure is that he is never running to Claire after that to tell her that he doesn’t wants to be shitty anymore and that she deserves his full focus….

Something about how there are several Michelin starred restaurants in Chicago (alone) run by married couples. The 2023 list was announced this week and not only did Kasama retain their 1 star, but also Oriole is another couple led restaurant & they retained their 2 stars. Then yet another couple run joint, Smyth, moved up and got 3 stars. There are actually multiple 1 star restaurants, in Chicago alone, that are couple run. It’s so normal in the restaurant business to have family run places. And it’s like that all over the world - mom & pop joints. It’s clearly no different in the fine dining world too. Something about that drives me a little bonkers with this show. The history of family, & couple led teams building something enduring together. And I’m not supposed to think about that?!
