Of all the shocking and upsetting scenes in The Handmaid’s Tale this is one of the worst. The slow reveal that Serena and Fred have condemned Nick to marry a child in retaliation for his love and concern for June. And Serena’s glee watching these young girls being given as rewards

It’s so hard to watch such a thoroughly broken June in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 2 Episode 5, but then for Serena to take Nick’s concern for June’s mental health and finish crushing her by forcing him to marry a child…and further endangering the life of the baby June carries…🤬

“We never had these in the grass where we used to live, remember?”
“Yeah, the Wives would never allow it.
Imagine the gossip.”
“Everything was so perfect.”
“I like them. They're happy for everyone.
They don't care who you are.”
“What'd you wish for?”
“I can't tell you.”

There are many moments in The Handmaid’s Tale where Serena’s desire to hurt June overwhelms any supposed concern she has for the baby she wants so badly. This one wasn’t even close to the worst but it’s still difficult to watch a pregnant woman being physically abused by another.

We understand how this crushed June in The Handmaid’s Tale 204, even if it’s Gilead’s fault, not June’s 😭

“Of course, if you asked them, this would not have been the path they would have chosen. But you didn’t ask them, did you? You chose for them. Such a selfish girl.”

In this scene from The Handmaid’s Tale 203, June is sad that her mom glorifies Moira’s progressive and risky job for a queer initiative over her own safe, mundane editing job. And heartbreakingly, these scenes seem more and more relevant by day 😭

What we wouldn’t give for Holly to learn what a badass her little girl became, and what she did to one of her rapists.

“Later, my Mom told me they were writing down the name of their rapist. And I remember thinking, there were so many pieces of paper. So many, it was like snow.”
