THIS is what a proper hip hop show is s'posed to look like. SHADOWMASTER MC hosting. Big energy and positive vibes onstage with a cut-throat cypher, and look! There's even, like, one two girls in the audience! 

YES that is an mpc. YES that is a pith helmet. RITA J broke it down with poise, style, skill and 99 pounds of ferocity. I love tonsofdudesofstagebuggingoutandyelling, but she provided a nice break.

Neak gets the party started at one of the best shows I've ever been to. 3LChicago Hip Hop Showcase 5 was RIDICUFUNKTASTIC. 

Action Bronson’s Blue Chips Mixtape produced by Party Supplies is everything it should be.  It represents where hip hop has been and where it is going.  Back to the real.  With Bronson you get straight power.  Raw lyrical power.  Dude doesn’t bother giving you hooks, sure he’ll have the odd interlude and break between verses, however what makes him so damn endearing is his ability to know what he is and not try to change it.  He cuts into his beat and eats it alive.  Literally, he could probably eat someone, or at the vary least figure out how to make them edible.  He was a cook prior to taking up rapping full time.  And his abilities in the culinary arts are evident in his writing.  There isn’t a track on Blue Chips that isn’t chock full of food references.  

The beats laced behind this BAM BAM Bigelow of an emcee are brought to you by Party Supplies.  I don’t know much about them, but I know that they know how to give a rapper room to move.  Their music is gritty and recalls the nineties with it’s at times heavy soul sampling and sparse arrangement.  A perfect combination to the hard east coast delivery of Bronson.  

To compensate for Action Bronsons preference to straight rhyming, they fill the mixtape with great vocal samples/drops and hilarious dialogue introductions.  This aspect goes nicely with Action’s at times playful manner.  It even has a Nick Nolte cameo!!!! Well sort of…

It’s safe to say that if you are going to talk about the current state of Hip Hop and not mention Action Bronson, then you aren’t really aware of much at all.  This is one of those guys.  He has his lane and he rules it with an iron fist.  He isn’t flashy, he definitely isn’t a sex symbol.  He’s that dude with that wit.  He’s the guy that all your favorite rappers are afraid to be compared to.  Action Bronson is what stands between the killers and the copycats.

Do yourself a favor and listen until the sun burns out.
