PART 2 OF 2
To start off, let's begin with a diagram similar to the previous one:
Tumblr media
One might notice that while things are similar, there are a number of differences, and I think that is intentional. Gnosticism is an influence on Deltarune, but its not a 1 to 1 copy of it. But for the comparisons, let's start with the most obvious, the dark worlds.
the original darkness in the gnostic sense is described as a sea of darkness, a filthy, corrupt, black liquid (some texts even describe it as aborition or stillbirth fluid). Likewise, the darkness in Deltarune is very "liquidlike", coming from fountains, emerging from "the deep". There are allusions to "an old song coming from the sea", Jevil describes "HELL'S ROAR BUBBLING FROM THE DEPTHS",and the track ocean.ogg is used frequently. The dark fountains themselves have a strange, watery texture.
Tumblr media
What little "primal" darkness we see is liquidy and bubbling, emerging from the ground much like a spring.
Tumblr media
Onionsan mentions a song echoing from "the deep" waters. I would not be surprised if the origin point for the darkness was some "underground ocean" of sorts.
The SOUL:
Tumblr media
Much like how God in gnosticism implants the soul into the material body of humans, we, the player, place the soul inside of the body of Kris. Only it is not we who place it, rather, it may be Gaster or the code or some other party. The soul is divine, and we, as the higher entity above the "light world", are connected to it. But there's another interesting overlap in terms of control. Certain gnostic beliefs placed the desires of the soul as being in conflict with the desires of the body. While this was most likely intended as a more metaphorical approach describing the conflict between one's material desires for good food and sex and whatnot, and one's spiritual desires to ascend and learn higher truths, if one were to take this literally, it paints a picture very similarly to our relationship with Kris. While we are mostly in control, Kris, the "lower body", can occasionally assume control, and Kris is not always in full agreement with our decisions, and seems to lament being a puppet 99% of the time. With time, I have no doubt that the body/soul divide will deepen.
Gnosis:
"Secret and/or higher knowledge" is a common theme of the secret bosses in Deltarune. Almost certainly granted to them by Gaster, there are two versions of this so far.
Tumblr media
Jevil rejoices in his gnosis, as by knowing the reality around him is false, he feels it grants him freedom. Even though he is restricted in the world, his mind is free, able to see the "true" reality of the world around him.
Tumblr media
Spamton, in contrast, feels restrained by his secret knowledge. He only used it for material gains such as wealth and fame, but still felt the restraint of the world around him. As opposed to Jevil's more "ascetic" or "spiritual" approach of finding freedom in a locked cage, all Spamton sought was further control over the world around him, a "materialistic" approach. No matter how much power in the dark world he obtains, it is never enough, as he knows of the "true powers" in charge of everything.
Other details:
Tumblr media
It is difficult to exactly place certain characters, such as Gaster, simply becuase we do not know enough about them yet. Perhaps Gaster shall play a role similar to Sophia, the accidental (or purposeful) creator of the original "darkness" that enables dark worlds to be created. Perhaps He shall be some form of Yaldabaoth figure for both the Light World and Dark Worlds, split between both yet propieting over both.
Tumblr media
You might also have noticed the abscence of a very signifigant fluffy boy on the chart, and that is because I do not know enough about Ralsei to say what specific role he plays. Though if I were to guess, he is more like Yaldabaoth than a normal darkner…
The end?
The purpose of this was less to theorize about the future of Deltarune, and more to comment on a connection that I'm surprised more people missed. There is a chance that it could be coincidental, but I would be surprised if it was. Feel free to take this and use it as a template for your own theories, I'd love to see them!
Deltarune and Gnosticism
Hello all, while I don't talk about UTDR on here often, I've been a big fan of the franchise basically since it's release, and today I'd like to document my own theory as to the nature of Deltarune's world. This is less speculative and moreso pointing out connections to existing real world things which I am surprised that nobody seems to have noticed or documented yet, so allow me to describe the various similarities between Deltarune and Gnosticism.
A quick Summary of Gnosticism:
"Gnosticism" is a broad term for a group of esoteric religious cults that originated in the 1st-3rd century AD. Its less of a single religion and more a broad coalition of esoteric cults with various overlapping beliefs and connections, and many contradictory ones. For the purposes of this I'm going to be using a very, very simplified version of gnosticism, partly for ease of conveying, and partly because some details are just wholely irrelevant. I'm also not a particular scholar in terms of gnosticism, if you wish for more detailed knowledge I would highly recommend reading the Nag Hammadi library yourself, or the works of prominent scholars such as Elaine Pagels. Here is a helpful (and very very simplified diagram) of one form of the gnostic cosmos:
Tumblr media
The CORE of Gnosticism is that "Gnosis", or knowledge of the Divine is necessary to transcend the world you live in. A popular origin is that Sophia, a Pleroma (higher being) inadvertently created a sea of darkness while attempting to create a world. In this sea of darkness a being called "Yaldabaoth" or The Demiurge appears, and seeing nothing around him assumes he's the god of everything. He then shapes this sea of darkness into the world that you and I live in now, and in this world he shapes humans out of matter. Then, the true God from which all things eminate sees this and grants "divine light" to the first human, Adam, through the tree of knowledge. This divine light would become passed down through his descendants to you and us.
Tumblr media
To the gnostics, this "divine light" could be cultivated through rejection of the material world, refusing to reproduce, and meditation/gnosis (IE, the gaining of knowledge). If you got enough divine light, you might obtain some form of magical powers and may eventually even be able to escape Yaldabaoth's domain and enter the heavens with the Pleroma. The gnostic's dualistic worldview, of a true reality of light and a false reality of darkness that must be escaped from, was considered mostly forgotten until the discovery of the Nag Hammadi library in 1948, and has influenced many stories and media since, including stuff like Homestuck and Shin Megami Tensei. But a false reality of darkness…
Tumblr media
And a true reality of light…
Tumblr media
I hope you are starting to see the CONNECTION.

Voting as Fire Extinguisher
by Kyle Tran Myhre
When the haunted house catches fire: a moment of indecision.
The house was, after all, built on bones, and blood, and bad intentions.
Everyone who enters the house feels that overwhelming dread, the evil that perhaps only fire can purge.
It’s tempting to just let it burn.
And then I remember: there are children inside.

Come choose your brand of feminism, we have:
-enjoying stereotypically masculine things is because you've accepted patriarchical standards that feminine things are inferior, and you only enjoy stereotypically masculine things to feel "superior" to other women for liking pink or do it for the attention of men and thus you have internalized misogyny
-enjoying stereotypically feminine things is because you've accepted the patriarchical standards of what a women should be, and you only do it to feel "superior" to nonfeminine women and to fit in better to the patriarchical society and for the attention of men and thus you have internalized misogyny
