The Van Eck Mansion Layout.
———
The basement is used for a wine cellar as well as extra storage.
The first floor contains a dining room, a luxurious living room, a large kitchen, a spacious pantry, a music room with a piano, a black-and-white tiled hall, and glass-paneled doors that open to the back garden, which faces the Geldcanal.
Wylan cleared the mansion of anything to do with his father. On the second floor, he turned his father’s bedroom into an art room for himself and his mother to use, joking that the room could “use some joy” after accommodating its previous resident. The office was kept, but the décor was changed so that it held no resemblance to the one his father previously used. Repairs were made to the floor separating the study and the dining room below. A new safe was also installed.
Also on the second floor is Wylan’s old bedroom (which was previously converted into a nursery for Alys and Bajan’s daughter, Plumje). It has been renovated into a master bedroom where he and Jesper reside and is situated on the west side. Marya has a room of her own on this floor, too. It’s situated on the east side so that she may look out over Second Harbor. They also still have the room Alys used to stay in before she left the city. Furniture from the nursery was moved to it so that whenever she comes to visit, she can stay in that room with her daughter. Along with these rooms, there are also three guest bedrooms.
On the third floor is the library, a room with a big luxury bath, a lounge area, a storage room for art supplies, and a work room / study area so that Jesper can freely practice his Grisha powers in private.
Like most very wealthy homes, the top (fourth) floor is devoted to servants’ quarters.
There is spacious grounds with lush lawns and beautiful flowerbeds. Across the garden is the mansion’s elegant boathouse as well as a private workshop that Wylan had specifically constructed so that he can safely continue his work with chemistry and demolition — just in case the need for his expertise is ever required.
They grounds are secured by high, ornate fences with a heavy gate at the front of the mansion. Security guards are employed to keep watch and patrol the area around the clock. The mansion itself uses Schuyler locks, which are extremely difficult to pick.
