Once downstairs he was careful to avoid going too close to the windows as he searched for supplies. In the kitchen he found a spare flashlight on top of the refrigerator, some batteries, a grill lighter, and a couple sturdy knives in the drawers, and some pencils and little note pads on the counter. It was a gruesome thought, but if anything happened to him Ava would need a way to communicate with other people.
Next he was able to locate a small office where inside one of the drawers full of papers he found a map. It was over five years old, but it could still point him in the right direction. After he found the address of the house on an old envelope he marked it down on the map and continued his search. There wasn’t much else worth taking in here, except for a couple interesting books, a mini tool kit, and some more pencils and note pads.
Tumblr media
Back out in the living room he looked outside and saw how crowded it had become. Of course these freaks had to be more active at night, how cliché. Oh well it didn’t matter really, he didn’t plan on leaving until morning anyway. Despite how little he slept he still needed to rest, even if for just a few hours.
He then grabbed a pillow off the couch and headed back upstairs. He found Ava sitting on her bed, looking all dressed and ready to go.
“Oh we’re not leavin just yet, honey.” He said as he set the gym bag down on the floor. “Walkers are more active at night. Besides I’ve been out there all day,” he set the pillow next to the wall and sat down next to it. “Even police officers need to sleep sometime.” He sniggered as he leaned back against the wall and set the pillow down on his lap. “But if you want you can stay up for a bit, tell me more about yourself. Or you can ask me any more burning questions you may have. I’m all ears... or eyes.” He gave her a bit of a smirk.

When Officer Todd told her she should pack some clothes Ava wasted no time. She grabbed her purple school bag and emptied it onto the bed.

“Where are we going? Can I get changed first?”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, you can get changed, honey, of course. You got a backpack? You’re gonna need it to pack some extra clothes. Keep it light, though cause you’re gonna have to carry it.”
Getting back to his feet he stepped over to the window and peaked outside. It was almost completely dark now, but at least the pounding at the front door had stopped. He closed the curtain and tucked it down as best he could to make sure nothing would be visible.
“We’re gonna make our way outta the city. Populated areas are the worst so we need to get out to the country. Before I got separated I was with a group that was headin west toward the highway. I'm hopin we can still catch up to em.” As he spoke he stepped over to his police bag and pulled out his flashlight. “You know if you got a map of the city around here somewhere?” He asked before he handed her the flashlight.
“You can use this but keep it pointed down at the floor away from the window. The walkers outside might see the light so be real careful. I’m gonna go have a look around the house, get some supplies.” He spoke as he headed over to the door. “I’ll be back soon, alright. Just stay here if you can till I get back.” With that he left her to gather up some clothes while he cautiously tiptoed down the hall.
Tumblr media
Along the way he passed a door to a room that was emitting a less than pleasant smell. He figured this was probably the bathroom. Next he came upon a bedroom, likely her fathers. In the closet he found a gym bag next to a couple pairs of shoes that were a size too big. He did find a nice jacket, however, which his quickly stuffed into the bag before he moved on to the dresser. He grabbed a few pairs of socks that didn’t look too worn, as well as a couple t-shirts and a pair of shorts. They were a little big but a belt could easily fix that. After that there wasn’t much else useful to take so he headed back out into the hall.
In the linen closet he stuffed a pillow case with a couple small blankets and a towel, expecting that would be something light Ava could carry. He dropped that off next to Ava’s door before heading downstairs.
“Well I don’t think you should stay here. No food or water, and that front door won’t hold forever.”
Ava wiped her tears and nodded. She guessed he was right, she had nothing left here now, but she didn’t want to leave really. Partially because of the monsters and also because she didn’t want to leave her home behind.

He felt bad that he’d made Ava cry. He’d probably been a little too harsh, but then again there was no easy way to explain it. What she said to him, though, nearly broke his heart.
“You came. There’s you.”
Tumblr media
“What do I do now? I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”
He looked back at her and shrugged. “Well I don’t think you should stay here. No food or water, and that front door won’t hold forever.”
Don’t do it!
He jerked his head up. Leon was standing on the other side of the room, giving him a dark look.
She’ll slow you down.
“I can’t just leave her here,” He replied before he remembered to stop himself. He quickly looked back at Ava and cleared his throw. “Uh... I mean I can’t just leave you here. You know... on your own. It’s not safe.”
She’s not your kid! She’s not your responsibility!
“I thought you were leaving,” He said sharply. Looking back at Ava, though, he could feel himself loosing it. He wiped his mouth nervously. “I’m just... thinking out loud.” He said hastily.
Oh, great cover...
Tumblr media
“You know... like talking to an imaginary friend."
Imaginary?
“You’re probably too old for that, though, huh?” He smiled and quickly got to his feet. He then turned away from Ava and stepped close to Leon so their faces were only a few inches apart. “Get out,” he said in a barely audible whisper through clenched teeth.
Tumblr media
Make me. Leon whispered back, smiling slyly.
Lincoln turned back to Ava, his hands on his hips, and spoke firmly, “You should come with me.”
Bitch!
He closed his eyes for a second, then opened them again and continued.
Tumblr media
“I know you wanna wait for your pa...” He stepped back over to her, knelt down and put a hand on her arm. “But I’ll take care of ya. I promise I won’t leave ya behind. What do ya say?”
I say we’re all gonna die.
“I wasn’t asking you...” He quickly closed his eye. “I mean... I am asking you.” He opened his eyes again and let his hand drop down so she could answer him.
“You know they can’t getcha in here. Even if they do I’ll take care of em. Nothin’s gonna hurtcha while I’m here. Alright?”
Ava nodded at him carefully.
“They are still very loud.”

Lincoln stepped over to the window and peaked outside. Her window overlooked the side of the house, making it impossible for him to see the front door or yard. However he did note that it was significantly darker now, and that there were several more cannibals wandering around down alongside the house as well.
Cautiously he put the curtain back in its place as he moved away from the window. He gently set his things down on the floor and stepped over to where Ava was cowering in the corner.
Tumblr media
“You know they can’t getcha in here.” He tried reassuring her as he knelt down to her level. “Even if they do I’ll take care of em. Nothin’s gonna hurtcha while I’m here. Alright?”
Sighing he moved over and sat down against the wall next to her. He sat there with his knees up, his forearms resting on top of them, staring off at the far wall. He could tell Ava all the most comforting words and phrases he could come up with, but it was up to her to actually gather her courage and stop crying. She had to find her own strength; he couldn’t give it to her, as much as he wished he could.
“The people outside...” he said softly, finally continuing their conversation from earlier. Even if it wasn't the best time he knew she wanted answers. Who wouldn't? And he couldn't keep all this from her. So the sooner she knew the whole truth the better. “The reason they’re trying to get in, to get at you, at us...” He paused, racking his brain, but there really was no easy or polite way to say it. “Is cause they’re hungry... and it’s... us they wanna eat.” He sighed and slowly turned his head to look at the girl. “It’s why they’re acting so crazy; it’s why everything went bad so fast.”
He turned with his whole body now to face her more directly. “The people who got sick, after they woke up they started attacking people. The people they attacked became infected and they also turned into these... monsters.” He shook his head. “Anyone who gets bit or scratched now becomes one of those things. There’s no cure, it all happened too fast. Now all we can do is keep moving and try to outrun em. And the only way they can be stopped...” He sighed. “Is by killing them… again. Only this time you have to go for their head. Stab em or shoot em... It’s the only way. There’s nothing else we can do for em.”
Tumblr media
He turned away again and leaned against the wall. He dropped his head and stared at the floor for a moment then took a deep breath. “And if your daddy hasn’t come back yet...”
He shook his head slightly, turning to look away from her. He wasn’t sure if he could say it... but he knew he had to. “He’s probably not coming.” He looked at the floor. “See these monsters, call em zombies, call em walkers, call em whatever you want... they’re impossible to get away from. That’s why no one’s come,” he finally was able to look back at her.
Tumblr media
“There is no one.” He closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the wall. Oh the things that were probably going through her head right now. He wished he didn’t have to be the one to tell her all this. But it was his job after all, right?
“I think I’ll be alright, darlin’, thanks. Your pa might now appreciate you handin out his clothes.”
There were a lot of things her father would not appreciate once he came home, perhaps it would be best to avoid adding to the list. She looked up at the man as he started to answer her. He explained that all of the houses were busted up but she didn’t need to be told that, she saw that everyday when she looked out of the window.

He sat there and watched Ava come over and sit. When she started moving her hands about, he leaned forward and paid close attention to what she was saying.
“Your hat is stupid and your clothes are dirty. You can borrow some of my dad’s clothes if you’d like, he won’t mind.”
Tumblr media
“What are you doing here? Why aren’t you like everybody else?”
He took a long, deep breath as he tried to figure out just how to explain the situation without frightening her too much. Of course, she already knew the people outside were dangerous, she just didn’t know why.
“Well, miss, I’m here because this house seemed like the only one not broken into. Every other house on the block has been busted wide open.” He started rotating the pot around, swishing the soup about so it would mix. “I figured since this one was all closed up then someone must be inside.” He looked back up at her. “As for what’s wrong with the people out there... it’s hard to say. It all happened so fast. People starting to get sick. The infirmary- uh..." He quickly rubbed his mouth before continuing. "I mean the hospitals... they filled up quick with sick people. Seemed like the whole world had come down with some incurable illness.” He shook his head sadly as he stared at the floor. “They all died.”
Tumblr media
His eyes lifted back up to Ava’s face. “Everyone who got sick...” He shook his head again. “They’re all dead.”
Biting his lip he busied himself with taking the pot off the flame and putting the fire out while he let that sink in. It was hard to believe, but what came next would be even harder to comprehend.
After the flame was out he got up and grabbed a bowl and two spoons. “Not everyone got sick, though. Some people made it out alright.” He continued as he walked back over and sat down across from the girl. “People like you, and me... some others I’ve met. I’ve been lookin for em actually.” He set the bowl on the floor and filled it all the way up, leaving less than half in the pot. “The sickness, though...” he shook his head. “It didn’t end.” He slid the bowl and spoon over to Ava. “The people who died... well, this may sound like a load of bull... but the people who died started waking up.”
Tumblr media
He gave her a serious look. “It was like somethin outta a horror movie..." He continued after a brief pause. "Only now it’s real... That’s what you saw outside. Those people walking around, bangin at your windows. They’re... mindless... empty...” He trailed off as he looked down at her bowl of soup.  “But,” he suddenly began again, “maybe this ain’t the best dinner topic. Let’s eat, and then we can talk more about what’s going on outside.”
He took the other spoon and stirred the little amount of soup that was left in the pot. He hadn’t eaten all day, nor had he been able to quench his thirst. So after he quickly finished off the soup he headed back to the front room to grab a bottle of water. That’s when the banging at the front door began. The door rattled violently, like this wasn’t the first time it had been banged on.
Tumblr media
He quickly grabbed his gun belt off the floor, buckled it back around his waist, and then grabbed the rest of his things and silently made his way back to the kitchen.
“We should probably go upstairs.” He whispered to Ava as soon as he returned. “Come on.” He held his hand out to help her up. “Try not to make any noise.”
“Hey, darlin, Hope you like beef and vegetable soup.”
Even if she didn’t like beef and vegetable she didn’t care, the smell was making her hungry and she’d eat whatever it was gratefully.

Ava smiled and gave him an apologetic look before she answered his inquiry about searching the house.
“Don’t go in the toilet though, okay?”
Tumblr media
He laughed and nodded.
Cute... Leon said snidely.
He got to his feet as Ava walked off with the food and water like he’d just given her ice cream and cookies. He smiled at her while Leon rolled his eyes.
He looked over at Leon, giving him a dark look. “A word...” He breathed through clenched teeth. They both headed off down the hall, and Lincoln glanced into the living room as they passed. He saw Ava climb onto the couch and hide under a blanket. He smiled at her innocence before continuing on to the kitchen.
So what the hell is this now? Leon cried as soon as they reached the kitchen.
He set the can of soup down on the cluttered counter and turned to face Leon. He put his hands on his hips and gave him a shrug and a “what the hell?” look.
Who the hell are you? What the hell is this?
He just continued to stare at the other man.
A cop? Really? You ain’t no pig, Lincoln!
Tumblr media
He looked off down the hall before he whispered, “I don’t know what you’re talkin' bout.”
Don’t act stupid, you know.
“No, I don’t”
A cop! Lincoln, a cop! Have you forgotten what those asshats were like?! Have you forgotten what they did?!
He shook his head, trying not to listen.
After what they did to you, what they did to your best friend! You’re going to parade around like one of them. Like a pig!
“I-!” He suddenly stopped, remembering Ava was right in the other room. He lowered his voice to a whisper before he continued, though still very angry. “I am a good cop! A decent cop! Don’t judge us equally.”
You’re a lunatic is what you are! And I’m not gonna sit here and watch you play policeman! You’re on your own!
“Whatever,” he replied angrily. "Fine by me." He turned, put his hands on the counter and leaned against them until he was certain Leon was gone.
Tumblr media
After a moment of staring blankly ahead he sighed and looked around at his surroundings.
The place, to put it mildly, was a wreck. Dishes filled the sink, the counters were cluttered, toys were scattered about, papers and other art supplies covered the kitchen table and it looked like the entire house hadn’t had a proper cleaning in over a month. Not to mention the smell, which he was just now noticing, was pretty bad. He didn’t even dare open the refrigerator, knowing that was the likely source of the stench.
First thing he did was test the stove, but the gas had stopped working so he moved to start searching through all the cabinets. He pulled out a sauce pan and a small pot and set them both in the middle of the floor. Then he grabbed a piece of paper off the table, tore it up and tossed it into the sauce pan. And after he’d put the soup in the pot he used a match to light the paper in the sauce pan, and held the soup pot over the flame.
A few minutes later, just as the soup was starting to bubble, Ava appeared in the doorway. She looked slightly better now that she’d had some water and a bit of food. Not quite so shaky and pale, though still skinny; as if a strong wind might carry her away.
“Hey, darlin,” he nodded at her, smiling. “Hope you like beef and vegetable soup.” He moved over slightly. “Why don’tcho come sit. Tell me bout yourself.” He smiled at her again. “I can tell you about me.”
Tumblr media
Ava watched eagerly as he rummaged through his bag. She would’ve felt bad for asking a complete stranger for stuff but at this point she honestly didn’t care anymore. She was hungrier than she’d ever been before and she was desperate to change that. She took the stuff that he handed to her, a bottle of water and a box of crackers.

“The people outside are crazy. I don’t know why. My Dad hasn’t come home yet. I’m waiting for him.”
Crazy? Yeah, that was putting it mildly. He didn’t think it was a good idea to tell her the people outside were the dead walking around, though; at least not yet. He could fill her in on exactly what was going on later. She was young, but still old enough to understand the situation. He looked up at her again when she started to say something else.
“You can talk normally, I can hear you.”
“Oh... alright then.” He nodded. Okay, so she could hear but not speak. That meant she was a mute. Well that made it easier... sort of. Hopefully she kept her movements slow so he could keep up. He’d never had much opportunity to actually communicate with someone through sign. One would think an officer of the law might encounter that more often, but not so.
He finally noted her anticipation. She seemed to want to ask him something, but either didn’t know how to ask, or wasn’t sure if she could.
“Somethin’ on your mind, honey?” He asked, leaning on his knee.
“Do you have any food?”
Do I have eat? No, not eat. Food! Duh...
“Oh! Of course,” he felt stupid now. That’s what he should have been asking her, not pointless questions about where her parents were or what she knew. Of course he knew her parents were dead and he’d already figured out she didn’t know what was going on.
He moved back over to his bags and opened up the one he’d taken from the gang in the van. It was completely disorganized. Bottles of pills, bandages, condoms (what the hell?), various creams and ointments, cans of beer, boxes of cereal and crackers, cans of soup, a couple bottles of water (some of it flavored), and those little bags of chips that were probably totally crushed into crumbs by now. And that was all that would apparently fit. No wonder the thing had been so damn heavy.
He pulled out a bottle of water, not flavored, and a box of crackers. He then turned to Ava and handed her the items. “Here, drink some water first.”
You’re just giving your supplies away now?
It took everything... absolutely everything... he had not to turn around and respond. Instead he shut his eyes and lowered his head.
After all that hard work? Leon continued. She ain’t helpless. Why doesn’t she go out and get her own food? You were doing it at her age.
Again he just stayed there, putting a hand over his eyes, wishing Leon would just go away. He wasn’t going to have this conversation, not now.
Leon came over and bent down close to his ear. Are you ignoring me?
Tumblr media
He cleared his throat and looked up at Ava, trying his best to give her a friendly smile. “You go ahead and have that, maybe I can find a way to warm up this here soup. Do you mind if I go have a look around?”
“It’s nice to meet you, Ava.”
She wanted to reply, to return the greeting but he still had her notepad, so instead she just stared at him. She watched his expressions change as he thought, it was funny to watch, interesting even.

“It’s alright, sweetheart,” he assured her as he leaned the poker up against the wall. Though when he looked back at her she was gesturing for him to wait as she was hurrying off to another room. He glanced around the room while he waited. She didn’t take long.
When she returned she had a note pad and a broke green crayon in her hand. The first thing that crossed his mind was that she was deaf, and she was going to hand him the note pad to write down his questions. Typically the art of learning to read lips took a while to learn. But then she started scribbling something down herself so he patiently waited for her to finish. After a moment she handed him the pad and he read what she wrote in big block letters.
MY NAME IS AVA. I’M WAITING FOR MY DAD TO COME HOME. I’M NOT SURE HOW LONG I’VE BEEN HERE, BUT IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME.
Tumblr media
He smiled up at the girl, but it faded just before he spoke. “It’s nice to meet you, Ava.”
The hard part would be telling the girl that her father wasn’t coming home. If he hadn’t returned by now... it almost definitely meant he never would. She didn’t know how long she’d been there, and something told him she didn’t even know what was really going on.
He wasn’t sure, though, why she’d decided to write down what she wanted to say. Her hand writing was a bit sketchy, and her spelling wasn’t perfect. Maybe she was just being shy? He’d heard of children who refused to speak after suffering a great trauma, and her father leaving her alone in a middle of a zombie apocalypse definitely qualified as a trauma. Or maybe she couldn’t speak. It would explain why she’d gone through the effort of finding the pad and writing her information down.
Suddenly, as if it was second nature, he set the pad down on the floor, looked up at the girl and signed, as he spoke out loud, “Do you sign?” He didn’t even think about how he knew sign language, the thought never crossed his mind, actually. He just continued to speak, while also signing, “Do you know...” he paused, thinking of how to say it. “...do you know what’s outside? Do you know... what’s happened? Where did your pa go?"
When the man came in he instantly went to lock the door behind him. She studied him carefully as he did so, tightening her grip on the fire poker. She really hoped he wasn’t a liar, if he was a liar she was in trouble. When he turned she noticed him become wary at the sight of the poker.

When he turned back around to face the girl she was standing with a fire poker firmly held in her hands.
“Hey,” he said with a smile, holding both his hands up in surrender. Of course he could easily overpower her, even with that poker in her hands, but the goal here wasn’t to subdue her, it was to gain her trust. “I’m not gonna hurt ya.” He said gently as he moved his left hand to the buckle on his gun belt and slowly opened it up. As the belt start to slip off he gently took it by the end and set it on the floor; then he set his bags and the rifle down on the floor and took a few steps away from all them.
Tumblr media
“You can trust me,” he said as he got down on one knee, his hands still held up in front of him. “You can call me Matt.”
From here he took a moment to look more closely at the girl. She looked dirty, pale and skinny, like she hadn’t had a good meal or a good wash in quite some time. The sunken eyes told him she was probably dehydrated as well. She was showing all the signs of neglect, signs he knew all too well. Clearly she was here all by herself. How her parents could have just left her there he couldn’t comprehend, but maybe something had happened to them. It was very likely after all, just look at Maya.
“What’s your name?” He finally asked. “Your mom and dad around? How long ya been here?” He decided to stop and wait for her to answer; he didn’t want to bombard her with questions and make her nervous or upset.
“wait!”
Ava froze, they’d never spoken to her before. Had she imagined it? She stared at the window from behind the sofa until she heard a soft knock again. She slowly made her way to the window and peeked through the blinds again.

At first he hadn’t understood why she’d run off, until he looked down at himself. His clothes were covered in blood, and he was sure his naturally pale face was also covered in a mixture of blood, sweat and dirt. He pretty much looked like one of those beasts. No wonder she’d been afraid. And who knows how long she’d been held up in there; probably since the beginning of the outbreak. The poor thing.
Moving quickly, Lincoln used a clean piece of his shirt to whip off his face at best he could. Then he pulled out his badge, leaned back up to the window and tapped on it again.
“Hey, darlin...” He whispered; his thick southern accent incredibly obvious. Though he knew she probably couldn’t hear him through the glass. So he decided to take the chance as he spoke up a little louder. “Hey, little darlin, I ain’t gonna hurtcha.” He held his badge up to the window. “I’m a police officer. See? I’m Officer Todd and I’m here to help. I promise it’s just me out here, but I need you to open the door, alright?” He paused, hoping she could hear him. “Look I know you’re scared but I just wanna help.” He continued to hold the badge up so she could see as he glanced around up and down the street. No cannibals around just yet, but he knew that could change very quickly.
Ava had been two days without food. The cupboards were empty now and the rest of the food had gone bad. She didn’t have the guts to leave the house, the crazy people hadn’t been near her house for a while but she knew they were still out there, waiting. She would rather stay inside her house where it was safe, cold, but safe.

Actually, his journey had become so routine he was actually beginning to get bored of it all. Running, bashing heads... was this all there was anymore? Who knew the zombie apocalypse would be so boring and droll. Wouldn’t it be awesome if a ninja just popped out of nowhere and challenged him to a death duel? Oh yeah, that would be amazing. But, of course, he’d left his ninja mask back in his bag, which was now in the car that was probably halfway to Alabama by now.
He was, likely, the last living person in the city, though; and he just may be the last law man in the world. Tipping his sheriff’s hat down slightly over his eyes, Lincoln stepped out into the road, his free hand hovering over his pistol. He was sure getting tired of these outlaw heathens coming in here and eating his people. This was HIS town. He was sheriff... He glanced down at the nametag on his shirt... He was Sheriff Matthew Todd, and he was gonna take his city back.
He turned to his right, pulling out his gun, ready to face whatever grotesque beast that came his way. He just wasn’t expecting to find himself facing a whole crowed of em.
Tumblr media
“Oh, shoot!” He sighed angrily. He put his gun up, shot one of the monsters through the skull then turned and ran off down the road. The monsters made chance, following him down the road, and into the alley he turned into. One was in there waiting for him, but he easily blew its brains out as he ran past it. The pistol was easier than the hammer, but a lot louder too. He knew he was attracting attention to himself and he had to find a way to escape. He knew he had to clear the city, but getting himself eaten in the process wasn’t going to help anyone. He owned it to this city, as sheriff, to keep on living and take care of these freaks.
When he reached the other end of the alley he found himself under the Marta subway rail line. He quickly ran up the stairs, reaching the rail through the smashed exit doors. There didn’t seem to be any cannibals wandering around up here, so he climbed down onto the track and quickly, but carefully, made his way down the line, safely out of the reach of any of the beasts. And the ones that had followed him up to the tracks clumsily fell through the tiles and splattered onto the street below.
It felt like a long time, at least an hour or two, before he finally reached the end of the line. The buildings were smaller here now; he knew he had to be close to the edge of the city. While he was determined to clear the city, he knew he still had to find his friends and make sure they were alright. He was a police officer after all, and it was his duty to protect and serve the decent people of this city.
Right now, though, he’d need to find a place to bunker down for the night, as the sun was setting and it would be difficult watching his back in the dark. So he climbed back up onto the platform and headed down into the station building. There were a lot of cannibals walking around inside, but moving quickly and making a direct beeline for the exit only attracted a few of them, all of whom he was easily able to outrun once back outside.
He tugged at the bags on his shoulder, wishing he could put them down and rest somewhere, but that meant an almost certain death. He really needed to find a place to rest because right now it felt like his arm was going to rip out of its socket.
After traveling a couple blocks he found himself in the suburbs. He slowly walked down of the middle of the road, noting how all the houses seemed to be busted open. There were no cars in the driveways, every door hung wide open, windows were shattered, and several devoured bodies littered the ground. All he had to do was take his pick. Of course then he’d have to spend several hours boarding it up and fortifying it, which seemed silly since he’d be leaving the next day.
Tumblr media
Until he came up on a house that was all totally boarded up. The door was shut, the windows were covered and the yard seemed totally clear of ciaos. Curiously he walked up the steps onto the porch and approached the front door. He put his ear up to it and listened hard for any sound at all. He couldn’t hear anything, but he knew there had to be someone inside so he stepped over to the window, got down on one knee and gently tapped on the glass. He hit it just hard enough so whoever was inside could hear it, but soft enough so as not to attract any attention outside.

All of a sudden there was a sound off in the distance, making Lincoln stop in his tracks. It sounded like a car revving its engine. Lincoln quickly ducked into an alley just as a grey, windowless van came speeding around the corner. Tipping his hat back so he could see better he peeked around the corner and watched the van stop in front of a convenience store. The back door slid open and five guys poured out into the street. They all were carrying heavy artillery weapons and were covered in tattoos and clothes adorned with a gang sign Lincoln didn’t recognize.
Three of them took a position out on the road while the other two went into the store, smashing out the door and windows. They seemed pretty proficient in what they were doing, although they were just asking for trouble with all those loud weapons.
There was a sudden moan behind him, and Lincoln was just barely able to spin around in time to smash the zombie over the head with his hammer. He turned and looked back out on the street and saw one of the guys heading this way. Gasping Lincoln hurried further into the alley and climbed into the big, open dumpster. He set his hammer aside and pulled out his new pistol, pressing himself up against the side of the dumpster wall as the man entered the alley.
Lincoln breathed slowly and quietly as he listened to the man’s footsteps slowly draw closer. He could just picture the man holding up that huge weapon, pointing it right at the dumpster Lincoln occupied. He could reveal himself, show them they were in no danger and that he wouldn’t follow, but somehow he didn’t think the man, or the others in his gang, would take too kindly to his officer’s uniform. The guy might just shoot on sight and not bother with asking any questions.
Lincoln could feel his heart beating faster and he closed his eyes as he tried to keep his breathing steady and quiet. In his hand he lifted his pistol and cautiously pulled the hammer back. He opened his eyes and looked up at the open top. He could hear the guy was only a few steps away when one of guys in his group called to him. Lincoln heard the footsteps stop and the guy called back to his group. They shouted back, telling him they were leaving. And after a brief pause the man hurried back out to the street.
Tumblr media
Lincoln raised himself up and peeked over the top of the dumpster. With it clear once more Lincoln jumped out of the dumpster and, in a crouched position, he hurried back to the corner and watched the group climbing back into their van.
Tumblr media
Lincoln raised his gun up and pointed it at the van, aiming for one of the wheels. They slid the door closed and the guy in the driver’s seat put the van into drive and started pulling away. Lincoln followed the van with his pistol. They passed by the alley and once they had picked up some speed Lincoln fired, blowing out the back left tire. The van swerved violently, but managed to stay upright as it screeched to a halt. Lincoln moved his gun to the front side window and fired again, shattering it, and possibly taking out the driver as well.
Smirking Lincoln got to his feet and took off down the road in the other direction, holding his hat to his head. Three of the guys in the van had finally gotten out now and were shooting at Lincoln as he fled. Most of the shots went wide, barely coming close to even hitting him, but one shot nearly clipped his heel, forcing Lincoln to turn right down another road.
Lincoln could hear them yelling at him, and he knew they were chasing after him. He quickly ducked into an alley to his right, heading back in the direction of the van. He stopped, turned back toward the road, ducked behind a trashcan and watched the guys chasing him run right past the alley. Quickly Lincoln got up and hurried down the alley back toward the van. He came up down the side of the building and found himself back on the street right in front of the van. The driver was slumped over in his seat, his face scratched up from the glass and a bullet hole in his neck.
Tumblr media
Holding his gun up Lincoln stepped over to the open back door and looked inside. There were two guys inside lying on the floor unconscious, cuts and bruises covering their faces. He reached in and pulled out one of the bags and one of the assault rifles. He slung everything over his shoulder and stepped away from the van. He would have taken more if he thought he could carry it but with the bag he already had he figured this was all he could handle.
He looked down the road where the other three guys had chased him. They hadn’t come back yet, but they were sure to show up any second. In their place, however, several zombies had shown up, obviously attracted to the noise. Lincoln took a few steps back, then turned and hurried back into the alley. Luckily most of the zombies ignored him and went straight for the van and the three bodies inside. At the end of the alley he hopped the fence to the other side and continued on his way.
Lincoln was slowly making his way down the street, keeping close to the side of the buildings for cover. So far every zombie he passed was so focused on the huge cloud of dark smoke in the distance that they didn’t even notice him sneaking by. It was a great distraction. Lincoln could tell that the fire had spread by now, almost the whole building was on fire and it sent up huge rolls of flames and smoke, bringing every zombie within ten smiles to the scene.

After turning left onto another main road Lincoln spotted a cluster of police cars blocking the street. Half eaten bodies littered the ground all around the cars, most of them officers but a few were civilian. They’d hoped for protection, when all they got was an early grave.
There was one zombie kneeling next to one of the bodies, gnawing away at its leg. The zombie was so engrossed in its meal it didn’t even notice Lincoln come up behind it and smash in its head. When he was disposed of Lincoln surveyed the surrounding area before digging through all the vehicles and bodies. Most of the guns he found had already been drained of their bullets, but after busting open the trunk on each vehicle he finally hit the jackpot inside the sheriff’s car. Several boxes of ammo and a couple shot guns sat inside just asking to be taken.
He stuffed everything into the duffel bag, and then went digging in the actual vehicle. The dead sheriff sat behind the wheel of his squad car, almost all his limbs, and most of his torso eaten off. Lincoln took his belt, his pistol even and found his hat sitting in the passenger seat. He loaded the pistol, slipped it into the holster and took a few steps back.
He took a wide stance in the middle of the road, his hand hovering over the gun in the holster. He ran his other hand along the brim of the hat on is head, a devious smile drawn on his face. In a flash he whipped the pistol out and started twirling it back and forth in his hand.  Forward three times, stop, backward three times, stop, forward four times, backward once, forward twice and stop, held aimed at his hip.
Up ahead a female zombie was coming toward him, her right arm was so busted up it just hung limply at her side, and her left leg dragged behind her so bad she looked like she would fall over any second. Lincoln stood up straight and twirled his gun a couple more times.
“In this world,” he said gruffly. “There’s two kinds of people, my friend.” He turned and walked slowly away from the zombie that was coming toward him. “Those with loaded guns.” He brought the gun up in front of his face and examined it. “And those who dig.” He smiled, lowering the gun halfway. “You dig.” He spun around, the gun up and aimed at the woman’s head. But just as he was about to pull the trigger he had a sudden thought. A glorious, ridicules idea.
Tumblr media
“Oh ho...” he smiled as he took the gun in both hands and opened up the cylinder and dumped out all but one of the bullets. “Alright... Let’s make it fair, shall we?”
He put the rest of the bullets in his pocket and locked the cylinder back in place and spun it around until it stopped on its own. When the woman got close enough he held her at arm’s length and stuck the pistol up to her head. “My friend Rickey and I played this once. He chickened the fuck out but I pulled that trigger and oh my god!” He laughed loudly at the memory. “But see this makes it fair! If I die, you live, and if you die, I live. So let’s start.” He pulled the trigger and the only sound the gun made was a soft “click!” Lincoln laughed, “Oooh...” He spun the cylinder again against his leg and put the barrel up against his temple. He squeezed his eyes shut, smiling with all his teeth showing, and pulled the trigger. Once again the only sound was a soft click. “Ah-ha!” He laughed and spun the cylinder once more. The zombie woman let out an aggravated yell as she reached for his chest with her good arm. “You’ll get your turn, relax.” He said as he put the barrel up to her head once more. He pulled the trigger and “BAG!” The gun erupted with sound as the bullet shot out and exploded the woman’s head.
Tumblr media
“Ho ho ho ha ha ha ha!” Lincoln laughed and stepped back, shaking his hand of the blood and guts. “Damn...!” Lincoln sighed. “I thought we’d go at least a few more rounds.”
Moving quickly Lincoln wiped his hand on his pants, loaded the gun back up, picked up a few more odds and ends off the bodies and from the cars and hurried on his way. That shot was sure to attract many walkers to the area, and he was forced to smash a few with his hammer on his way out.
After standing there for over a minute Lincoln became confident that nothing was coming up. So even if those zombies on the ground had gotten into the building they were all probably still wandering around the first floor. He opened the door and looked inside, finding the stairwell completely empty. Sighing he started down the stairs, his hammer clenched tightly in his hand.

After going down three floors, to the eighth level, Lincoln cautiously opened up the door and peaked into the big, white, empty hallway. After stepping into the hall he quietly closed the door behind him and cautiously made his way toward the other end of the corridor. As he went along he glanced into each open door, soon figuring out that this was some sort of office building.
He got to the end of the hall and turned down the connecting corridor. There was a female zombie limping along down the hall in the other direction, only to abruptly stop and turn toward Lincoln. She instantly started shuffling toward him, only to find Lincoln’s hammer become lodged in her face. Just behind her, though, another zombie came wandering out of one of the rooms, obviously attracted to the noise. Lincoln pulled his hammer out of the female zombies face and smashed it against this new zombies head.
Just then a whole group of zombies came pouring out of a nearby conference room. Most were dressed in business suits and formal work attire, making it obvious that these people had been some of the first to fall victim to this curse. Lincoln staggered backward and turned to run back down the hall only to find three more zombies had appeared behind him. Quickly he ran into the nearest office, slamming the door behind him. The group crashed up against the door just as Lincoln turned the lock. He turned around, panting heavily, and came face to face with another zombie. Lincoln let out a yelp and swung his hammer. The head of the hammer only managed to smash his nose and a part of his jaw off, however. And after it had recovered from the blow it came at Lincoln again. He kicked the zombie in the stomach and lunged forward on top of the beast. Finally he brought the hammer down hard on the zombie’s forehead, ending its existence.
Lincoln climbed back to his feet and stumbled backward into door. He lowered his head and closed his eyes, breathe heavily for a long time as the zombies on the other side of the door moaned and pawed at the wood. As he sat there panting he slowly became angry with himself. Here he was, left behind by the group, trapped in this little office, acting like a scared child. Why wasn’t he doing something? He was a grown man and he should act like one.
Tumblr media
He opened his eyes, a grim look on his face as he glanced down at the name tag pinned to his new policeman’s uniform. Even upside down he could easily read what it said, “D. Todd.”
“Alright, Pilgrim.” He said in a deep, serious voice. “Let’s get the hell out of here.”
He stepped over to the window on the opposite wall and pulled it open. He stuck his head out the window and looked across the alley at the building on the other side. The two buildings were only about six, maybe seven feet apart; a pretty easy jump. And a few windows over and two floors down he saw one of the windows on the other building was open.
After sticking his head back inside he started digging through his pockets. He found a little sampler bottle of vodka and a box of matches. Smiling Lincoln pushed the desk up against the door, threw the dead body on top of it and poured the vodka over the body. He then lit one of the matches and threw it on top of the body, which almost instantly became engulfed in flames. He jumped back and stared at the flames in a sort of mesmerized state.
Tumblr media
What a beauty fire could be. Dancing around in such a simplistic, yet cosmic grace. Engulfing everything in its path, leaving nothing untouched. It consumed everything. How beautifully magical was that? He stood there gaping at the flames for a long time as they slowly poured over the body and consumed the desk. A slight smile appeared on his face as he held his hand up and reached toward the flames. The air in the room was becoming very hot, almost boiling but Lincoln didn’t seem to notice. His hand came within an inch or two of the flames when it suddenly leapt forward, nearly scorching Lincoln’s hand. He jumped back, pulling his hand away, a smile still on his face.
He continued to watch the flames for another moment before he pulled himself back to reality. He looked around the room, seeing that the flames had started climbing up the wall, licking the ceiling. He quickly turned back to the window, slipped his hammer through the loop on his pants and climbed out onto the ledge. He reached back in and grabbed the window to pull it close, noticing that the door had been slightly pushed open. The arms that reached through the crack were instantly swallowed up by the flames, but that didn’t even slow them in the slightest.
Lincoln narrowed his eyes and pulled the window closed; he then stood up and inched his way over to the side of the ledge, closer to the next window. As he did the Spiderman theme song started playing inside his head and he couldn’t help but sing along.
“Spiderman. Spiderman.” He reached his left arm and leg out toward the next window, but it was just barely out of reach. “Does whatever a spider can.” He bent his knee and hopped over to the next window ledge with relative ease. “Spins a web, any size.” He then continued to do the same thing to reach the next window, “catches thieves just like flies,” and the next until he was directly across from the open window on the other building, only two stories up. “Look out. Here comes the Spiderman...” He knelt down and slowly lowered himself down to the window ledge just below him. “Is he strong? Listen bud, he’s got radioactive blood.” Taking a deep breath Lincoln turned himself around so he was facing away from the window and looking down at the open window one floor down on the opposite building. “Can he swing from a thread? Take a look overhead.” He knelt down, gripping the ledge of the window tightly, bracing himself for the possible impact against the brick wall. “Hey there... there goes the Spiderman.”
Tumblr media
And he jumped, pushing off the ledge with both legs across the alley and down to the open window. His arm hit its aim when it shot through the open window and latched onto the ledge. His feet slammed against the wall, but not quite as hard as he was anticipating.
Pulling himself up he looked into the window, finding another office. Pushing himself up all the way over the ledge he quickly climbed into the room. All of a sudden there was a loud explosion. Lincoln stuck his head back out the window and looked over at the window he’d originally climbed out of on the other building. Flames and smoke were billowing out of the now shattered window, sending up a huge “zombie come hither” signal. Smiling Lincoln pulled himself back inside, grabbed his hammer and opened the door out into the hallway. The corridor was empty so he quickly rushed down the hall until he found the stairwell.
Reaching the first floor in less than a minute Lincoln cautiously opened up the door to the main lobby. To his surprise it was completely empty. So he hurried out into the reception area and headed over to the front door. He looked out through the glass door and watched as several zombies shuffled past the building toward the one he’d just set on fire. When they’d passed Lincoln pulled the door open and stuck his head out. He looked over at the building he’d just been in a moment ago, a huge horde of zombies scrambling to get inside. Smiling Lincoln quietly slipped out the door and slyly ran down the street in the opposite direction.

How about that? I bet they don’t even know you’re gone! Leon cried irritably behind him
Tumblr media
“What did ya want em to do?” Lincoln replied, turning to face him. “Plow through the crowed of zombies?”
They didn’t even stop, Link!
“They were right on top of us you dipshit! If it was you driving there’s no way in hell you would've stopped! So don’t give me that bullshit!” Lincoln grimaced and turned away, holding the back of his head. Damn, his head hurt like hell.
I told you it was a bad idea to leave the hospital.
“Don’t start...” He moaned.
They’re not even gonna come back, I bet. Just leave you here to get eaten. Bunch of ass holes. You can’t trust anybody, you know. I told you-
Tumblr media
“Would you shut up!” Lincoln spun around, suddenly furious. “I don’t need to hear it right now, Leon! Just shut up!”
What the hell are you yelling at me for!? I’m not the one who left you behind!
“No,” Lincoln pointed at Leon, “you’re-” All of a suddenly Lincoln noticed there was something on his hand. He turned it over and looked at his palm. It was covered in blood. Was it from one of the zombies? No, it couldn’t be, it was too fresh.
He put his other hand on the back of his head and wiped it over where he’d been hit. He brought it forward and found that this hand was now also covered in blood.
Tumblr media
Damn zombie must have hit him harder then he thought. Lincoln looked up at Leon, but found that he was gone again.
“Leon?” He called out, looking all around the roof. He couldn’t find him, but he did find a door. He quickly wiped his hands on his pants and grabbed his hammer off the floor. He ran over to the door but before opening it he put his ear up to it and listened. He couldn’t hear anything so he cautiously turned the handle, only to find it locked. Without hesitating Lincoln smashed his hammer against the handle, knocking the knob completely off. He then stood back from the door and waited for something, anything, to come charging through.
Lincoln was still holding the back of his head when Gwen finally arrived. She climbed into the car but was suddenly grabbed by one of the zombies.

Both he and the zombie fell back on the ground and Lincoln immediately turned and pounded his hammer down on the zombies face. Lincoln looked up and saw the crowed coming toward him. He stumbled backward as he hastily got up and took off running after the cars. He got around the corner, seeing the cars were far off down the road already, and there were a whole lot of zombies between him and them.
Tumblr media
He stomped his foot in frustration and looked all around, trying to figure out where to go. A zombie grabbed his arm and Lincoln pulled away and started running again, the horde not far behind. He continued in the same direction that the cars had sped off in, looking back at the crowed behind him and flipping them off.
Tumblr media
At first he was able to keep well ahead of the crowed, but as he passed more zombies and they started chasing after him as well he knew he wouldn’t be able to keep this up for long. After running several blocks he turned down an alley next to a tall building with an outdoor fire escape.
In a daring leap Lincoln reached out for the bottom ladder and just barely caught the bottom rung with one hand. He pulled himself up and used the hammer to grab the second rung, but then suddenly felt one of the zombies grab his leg. He kicked hard, forcing the beast to let go. He then quickly scrambled up the ladder and made it to the first landing. He didn’t stop there, though, and continued on up the staircase until he’d reached the roof, a good ten stories up.
Panting heavily he held the hammer up with two hands in front of him, turning and looking all around. When nothing came forth he sighed and put his hands on his hips, desperately trying to catch his breath. He didn't stand there long, though. He hurried across to the other side of the building and looked down on the street below. He saw the two vehicles way off in the distance now. Either that hadn't noticed he was gone or they just weren't going to bother coming back. He couldn't blame them.
Tumblr media
“We got a horde about a half mile up the road heading this way.”
Gwen cursed quietly to herself, she knew that something like this would happen. Lincoln started making references again, she rolled her eyes but otherwise ignored him, she had more pressing matters to attend to.
