When I was working on ‘Alone Together’ over a year ago I remember being struck with a REALLY dire need to draw Stevonnie in an Utena Duelist uniform… Anyway I recently found the sketch I did of it so I cleaned it up and here it is. I hope someone understands this.

Note: This was written by Miyazawa after losing his younger sister, and it’s probably the poem of his that has the biggest influence on Penguindrum’s themes and imagery. It’s long, so I’ve bolded passages that I find partricularly relevant, but please read it all the way through. It’s absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful.
When going through fields on a dark night like this
The windows of train cars become windows in an aquarium
(Rows of dry telegraph poles
Seem swiftly passing by,
The train in the galaxy’s luminous lens
Is running through a big hydrogen apple)
It is running through an apple
But where in the world is this station?
A fence of burnt railroad ties lined up
(Night’s silence, August’s agar)
A row of poles with crossbars
Is made only of dear old penumbras
Two yellow lamps lighted, and
The tall and pale stationmaster’s

During the Rose of Versailles, by wearing the uniform, Oscar hid her own body line - her own femininity. But now, times have changed. Even though it’s not yet a world where all women are free, this costume might allow her the chance to be a “woman.” We’re trying to envision a world where a woman can decide what she does with her own body. Mawaru Penguindrum Guide Book - Interview with Kunihiko Ikuhara (director)
This is probably the one you’ve waited for the most, and you’ll all feel trolled because it’s so shooort, includes mostly talk about the series’ composition, and doesn’t really tell you anyhting “new” about the story. However, this is not the only Ikuhara-talk in the book, there’s still another one where he talks to author Mizuki Tsujimura, and that one is fucking long.
(Actually though, the interview with Lily Hoshino, which is the next one to come, is probably far more interesting)
Also: oh god this interview is full of so many… “art”-expressions (;;°_°;;)
I’ll probably edit around in this one in a few days because it was really hard for me to express it properly, even though I do understand it :x
