when I see something dated 2019 I think “oh that’s not too long ago” and then I remember that 2019 was not only five years ago but those five years have somehow contained several lifetimes

it is my hope and dream that everyone on tumblr can go outside and visit a gay bar or go to a queer event and see that our community is very beautiful and very diverse and that half the internet discourse isn’t real

I think the major mistake some are making is thinking of Buck & Eddie as a “slow-burn” that the show has been intentionally building for years, and therefore seeing bucktommy (both its existence and it’s relative popularity as a ship) as a betrayal. But there’s really little evidence of that. When you take a step back and try to view it objectively, try to take things at mostly face value… there’s a reason the larger general audience didn’t catch on. There’s a reason that Bi Buck came as a surprise to so many.
Watch the show with just some average person who doesn’t spend a lot of time online in predominantly fandom based spaces, who hasn’t trained themselves to look for “subtext” and “parallels” in everything. Don’t influence them first. Chances are, they’re not going to see it. And that’s because it was never really intentional. They wrote and acted this knowing some people might read it a certain way, and that’s okay, but it wasn’t the message they were actively trying to send to the average viewer.
It’s not a secret code that only the very smart and attentive will crack. It’s a network procedural that regularly forgets the passage of time and is always scrambling to figure out the story details and swapping out scenes because they’re short on one and not the other. They regularly write backwards from the conclusion because they’re disorganized and not great at time management. It’s actually the perfect set of circumstances to create a large active online fanbase, because of emotional stories and the human nature drive to correct for logical inconsistencies.
Fandom tends to extend credit where not due in some areas, and then exact payment they were never promised in others. It’s a bit like winning the jackpot- it’s a nice idea but you have to know the odds are against you, so pinning all your hopes on the Powerball is probably not a great idea. Someone else winning doesn’t mean anything was taken from you. No one made you buy that ticket or promised you a thing. You can’t be mad at the guy on the news calling out the numbers, or the cashier who sold you a ticket because they said “good luck!” to be nice.

i learned about Tim Wong who successfully and singlehandedly repopulated the rare California Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly in San Francisco. In the past few years, he’s cultivated more than 200 pipevine plants (their only food source) and gives thousands of caterpillars to his local Botanical Garden (x)

when you're going through autistic burnout so one of your buddies takes you to the lake and to get ice cream to destress just to end up having a conversation with you where he reveals he is proudly homophobic and even more biphobic 🙃

emily gwen, the creator of the sunset lesbian flag that we’ve come to commonly use, still continues to live in poverty.
Tumblr media
multi-billion dollar companies have used their design and made profit from it, and yet they have not seen a cent for their creation.
i’ve been friends with emily for years, and i have not once seen them be financially stable the entire time. i’ve seen them homeless, unemployed, starving. right now, they need our help more than ever.
please consider donating to emily’s ko-fi, especially if you’ve used their design to create something and profited from it.

So we all know that Tumblr is US-centric. But to what degree? (and can we skew the results of this poll by posting it at a time where they should be asleep?)
Reblog to increase sample size!
