why myra kaspbrak is abusive.
ive seen posts circulating that eddie kaspbrak is abusive to myra more than she is to him. heres why he isnt and myra is. credit to @richietoizer, @blood-stricken, @kasbprak, @willelbyers and more for helping me find the quotes!
“It was Myra herself who had ended up tripping the scales away from independence. Myra had condemned him with solicitude, nailed him with concern and chained him with sweetness. Myra, like his mother had reached that final, final insight into his character: Eddie was all the more delicate because he sometimes suspected he was not delicate at all. Eddie needed to be protected from his own dim intimations of bravery” (cred: @richietoizer) Basically, Myra has convinced Eddie he’s weak even if he thinks or even says he isn’t.
"Eddie did not need a shrink to tell him that he had, in a sense, married his mother." -page 86 This ones obvious, the book is saying Myra is his mother. Meaning she has the same abusive techniques.
" The thought of simply bundling him into the closet and then standing with her back against the door until this madness has passed crossed her mind, but she was unable to bring herself to do it, although she certainly could have; she was three inches taller than Eddie and outweighed him by a hundred pounds." Page 87. Okay, this is absolutely horrible. The narrator is saying Myras inner thoughts. While yes, this is sad, its also obviously abusive and just plain obvious too.
"She was staring at him, her face full of perplexity and terror, and he might have felt sorry for her if his heart had already been so filled with terror for himself" page 88. Eddie was too scared to feel bad for her. Now I’ve seen this be taken two ways. What it actually means is Eddie was so scared about dying he couldn’t care about her fear of him leaving for a weekend. He is not being at all abusive.
“Dear God, if You are there, please believe me when I say I don’t want to hurt Myra.” Eddie doesn’t wanna hurt her emotionally, not because he loves her, but because he’s not fucking abusive and still cares.
"He could feel her plump pink hands on him, touching, exploring, pulling with helpless desire but no real strength, trying to seduce him with sweet tears of concern, trying to draw him back." - 97 THIS. IS SO FUCKING CREEPY. She’s attempting to guilt him into sex, which is absolutely disgusting.
"She grabbed his collar and pulled him backward, like a beefy cop putting the grab on a suspicious fellow who is trying to flee." This is borderline physical abuse.
ONE MORE REMINDER THAT THE PERSON INSULTING MYRA IS THE NARRORATER, NOT EDDIE.
Another point, saying Myra is sadder than Patty is, in my opinion, highley untrue. Myra most likely knew how bad her thoughts were, Patty did nothing wrong. She had a husband she loved and was happy, and out of the blue he killed himself-with no explanation. That’s the saddest character, not Myra.
As someone who’s been through emotional abuse, I can say that all of these are examples of emotional abuse. While Myra is sad she shouldn’t be excused because shes “overweight and a woman”
We do not “hate” Myra because were fatphobic, we dislike her because we do not allow abuse.

It was something…like a secret name. A secret identity. A way to be people that had nothing to do with their parents’ fears, hopes, constant demands. Richie couldn’t do his beloved voices for shit, but maybe he did know how important it was for creeps like them to sometimes be different people.
