One time my friend told me "mates' rates" is an AU/UK/NZ thing and US Americans don't use the phrase even though it's two syllables long and rhymes beautifully. They have to say things like "discount for friends and family."
I think about this sometimes. It doesn't seem as satisfying, or as... pleasantly informal.
