JJ Maybank sneaking into his kook girlfriend’s bedroom window. Doing a tuck and roll that wipes everything off her desk.
Forever miss quoting films like you think he’s about to compare his sneaking around to a rom-com, but he’s thinking of alien v predator or some shit.
Trying to find her at a party and she’s surrounded by kooks. And after he’s saved her, he’s replaying his moves like saving private Ryan. A long and laborious mission to extract the asset deep from enemy lines.
JJ using code words for his entry and escape from her house. Literally still on the phone to her as he narrates how he’s going to get to her. All while she’s watching him from her bedroom window.
When she does meet him at the cut he’s smearing her sticky sunscreened skin with dirt and making her wear his cap. One of his muscle tees covering her little vest top.
JJ translating every bit of slang the Pogues say to her. He gets distracted most of the time and rambles on something completely different most of the time. Teases her though and sometimes tells her it means something else 😂 so when she uses it out of context he can tease her more.

You mentioned that JJ’s older brother was a fireman and I’m just thinking of the episode where the chateau gets set on fire 😩
Omg yes 😭 as soon as Bobby Maybank heard the location on the radio, he was telling the driver to speed up!
The firetrucks not even came to a stop and he’s jumping out. He’s about to run into the burning chateau when he hears JJ calling him from the dock.
When the fires been put out and it’s nothing but rubble and ashes, he checks over JJ and his friends. Making sure they aren’t hurt and if they need anything.
Will definitely make it his mission to sweep the site and find out who did it. Watch out topper 👀

Underground fighter JJ x Champion boxer kook
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meet your fighters:
JJ Maybank's still reeling after his father lost the families boxing club due to his gambling addiction. So he's resorted to underground fighting and collecting enough money to buy back the Maybank's share of the club.
Maria Marlowe left the figure eight after her parents divorce and followed her mother to the cut. She ignored the pleas of her father to stay at the state of the art fighter ring on the kook side. Leaving all her expensive gear and trainer father, she finds an ally in the grumpy teen who spends most of his time hitting the punching bag.
Will she be able to climb back up the ranks and get to the champions without her father?
I've been watching kingdom 🥴 and just thought of underground fighter JJ - Yiiyii

Are burnt out kook and Barry a thing from your last fic? I know she’s involved with Rafe but is there’s something with Barry too 👀
This [prompt] and this [fic]
Yes but it’s nothing serious, more of a need for each other out of convenience. Like Barry and her using each other in order to fill a need (a bit of fun and she’s definitely slept with other people too that’s she’s met at the trailer that she’s attracted to).
There’s somewhat of a friendship between them, but both know not to complicate things. So yes there is a thing between them but it’s not serious or possessive.
She’s more drawn to Rafe, (said before that she’s thinks their meeting is fate).

Summary: burnt out, overachieving kook vouching for Rafe. Featuring Barry 🫢 my fave duo is Rafe/Barry in the obx. Based on this [prompt]
She didn’t know why, but a sleepy Rafe drew her attention and kept her in her spot. His large form sprawled out on the moth eaten sofa, arm hanging off the edge and fingers twitching against the stained rug.
She’s sat on the floor, elbow propped up on the sofa close, but not too close to the snoozing kook. Her papers spread across the coffee table but her focus on Rafe’s low snores. Tilting her head, she peaked at his face beneath the curtain of hair that covered his eyes, hand reaching out to sweep them out of the way.
The stomping of boots pulled her out of her trance. She whipped round, Barry looming over her with two mugs.
Barry placed a mug on the table, “keep it business, girl,” he said sliding the coffee into her hands. There’s a smirk on his face, but she knows it’s a warning and not some friendly advice from a someone that cares.
“Always, B.” She hummed wrapping her hands around the hot mug, palms stinging the tighter she gripped it. The burning sensation distracting her from the grimy trailer and the dealer smirking down at her.
“Well fucking him, ain’t getting me no money.”
The knot in her stomach twisted, she knew he was testing her and the way Barry’s eyes flitted between her and Rafe it was only a matter of time till he questioned her loyalty. She’s not foolish though, her only loyalty being to herself.
Hungry dogs are never loyal and the scraps Barry’s been feeding her are only enough to make her stay for now.
“That’s not what I’m doing,” she whispered, the trailer silent and vacant of low snores and deep breaths. She almost jumped as Rafe’s finger traced her leg.
“You’re the one that vouched for him and I want my money, do something about it,” Barry spat, he jabbed her shoulder and held up one finger, “you got one day.”
A stained ring mark from her coffee bled into the papers. She huffed gathering them all up and stuffing them back in the plastic bag Barry gave her to keep them in. No longer in the mood to stare at numbers with his warning hanging over her head. Padding down the narrow hall way, the sliver of light coming from her room gave her a spec of comfort. She was so close to crossing into the safe territory when she felt a tug on the back of her T-shirt.
She groaned, willing herself to face whoever demanded her attention. What she didn’t bargain for was Rafe Cameron’s lips on hers as soon as she spun round, hands on her hips guiding her into her room. He kicked the door shut behind him, sliding the lock over with one hand whilst the other held her chin, fingers digging into her cheek as he leaned into the kiss.
“Stop,” she said pushing him away and trying to catch her breath. Her chest rose up and down, lips tingling and cheeks prickling with heat.
Rafe wiped his lips, nodding his head before he fell back into the lumpy mattress. “Too early?”
She shook her head and stood between his spread legs. “No, it’s just B’s on my case about the money. Wants you to have it by tomorrow.” She smoothed her hands along his broad shoulders, touch faltering as he tensed.
Smiling Rafe leant back on his elbows, nudging his head for her to follow. She hovered over him, brows furrowed as she waited for him to reply. His eyes roamed her face, but she knew his mind was racing and about to spiral. To what she doesn’t know.
She’d seen him once before, like a switch had flipped and his first instinct was to hit out. Whether that be with his tongue dripping with hateful words or his fists aiming to hurt. Never had he directed it at her, but she knew that someone wound up like that would eventually turn against anyone, including her. So she wanted to tread carefully.
He flipped her over, “what you want me to roll over because I’m in your bed?” He whispered against the shell of her ear.
The low chuckle that shook his body, sent a shiver down her spine. She didn’t move until he’s off the bed and halfway out the door. “I’m serious, Rafe.”
“Maybe you should stay in bed, you’re good at that.”
It shouldn’t burn as much as it did. She’s used to the fiery push and pull, hell she’s the one normally dishing it out, but she’s resigned to the fact that maybe she deserved being on the receiving end.
The silence making the delivery of his line punch more on impact. She didn’t bother going after him, just gave in to whatever would come from vouching for Rafe.
**
The perk of living at the trailer with Barry, was the lack of other people hanging around in the morning. Most of the visitors long gone whether that be at home or passed out in a ditch. She found herself checking her phone. Both Barry and Rafe ignoring her since yesterday. She didn’t know what was worse, no contact or all of their attention.
The front screen door flung open and crashed against the trailer. She clambered off the deck chair, boots kicking up dirt as Barry came stomping towards her. His thick brows furrowed, eyes narrowing as soon as they fell on her.
“Come on,” Barry said tugging her by the arm. “Let’s go see country club.”
It’s exactly twenty fours hours to the dot, since he warned her yesterday. No room for anymore excuses or a plea for an extension.
The gun strapped to Barry’s waistband is glaring at her as she followed him to his motorbike. She doesn’t try to talk her way out of it, she knows it won’t do her any good. So she blindly allowed him to guide her to the bike, hand clasped in his as if she’s going to flee. Some warmth in the action, keeping her steady as she trailed further down the path she paved with spite.
Barry turned to her, stopping before she could take the helmet dangling from the handlebars. “You’re my favourite girl,” Barry mused stroking her hair like he would a dog. “But even you don’t get a free pass, you’ll learn.”
Releasing a deep breath, she clasped the helmet over her head and climbed on after Barry, arms wrapping around his torso. Her gaze caught his in the side mirror, a gentle tap to her thigh letting her know he was about to pull off and for her to hold on.
The dirt roads of the cut fell away behind them, a familiar sting igniting in her chest as the houses got larger the closer they got to the Cameron’s house.
She wondered what her family was doing, but didn’t care enough to dig too deep in the thought. Her home a few houses down from the Cameron’s. The distance enough to make her tighten her hold on Barry as if he was going to drop her off to her father.
Before she could get off the bike, Rafe was charging down the driveway. She hung back watching the exchange, both guys red faced and spit flying as they hurled threats. She’s not sure who threw the first punch, but she rushed to them and shoved them apart.
“You damn Kooks, always sticking together,” Barry spat, wiping the blood from his mouth with the back of his hand.
She shook her head, “B, wait,” she called after him reaching out to pull him back.
Barry shrugged her off. “You wanna vouch someone,” he shouted in her face. “That’s what’s going to happen.” He pointed to Rafe, whose nose was dripping with blood and knuckles grazed.
The rage directed at her, mere frustration for her getting caught up in the politics of dealing. In a twisted way Barry was just teaching her how to handle her affairs. She knew he meant well, knew the person standing before at face level. Part of her scared to discover more.
Without so much as another glance he left her standing in the driveway, motorbike disappearing beyond the brick wall.
“You need to go.”
Rafe’s words were on repeat in her head, thoughts scrambling on if she’d see her family. Her focus on the gate closing, much like her freedom if she stayed in the figure eight for too long.
“Are you listening?”
She flinched as his hands squeezed her arms, not realising how close he’d been to her a second ago. The red stains marring his face already dry, swirling on his white teeth as he spoke once more.
“I told you…” her voice trembled, she wasn’t sure whether it was from the anger or fear of watching the two go head to head.
“I said go!” Rafe nudged her away, hand on her lower back guiding her down the driveway. “Or better yet go home instead of playing dealer. You’re a fucking Kook.”
She knew they were both on fragile grounds. The weight of their choices digging their own graves. Hers a lot shallower his. So she did what she did best and pushed back.
“Says the kook moonlighting as a dealer.”

Hey, Maybe...I'm really not sure on what to include in general for each sister, but definitely have people/characters in film that have been some inspiration for them.
I will try and see, so possibly - Yiiyii 😅

Hi, I was just wondering how did the overachieving Kooks become burnt out? What happened or didn't to make them like that?
thank u
Tumblr media
Some of them I kinda put in what happened, but will expand on that. [Prompts here]
JJ's overachieving girl: She didn't get much attention at home from her family and she tried to excel in everything she could to earn their attention. She just wanted to be seen, from a large family and her sisters naturally have talents that propel them further than her.
So after while she's had enough, then she finds out her kook boyfriend is cheating on her and she ends up having a full on explosive fit of rage. This then gets her banned from the country club and the wrong attention from her family. So she gives up trying to get it.
Pope's overachieving girl: I didn't actually write how she burnt out, but she was wrongly accused of cheating on an essay at school. It's like a whole thing, because she can't prove it either. It's her word against the popular girl who stole her work and gave it in before her.
Luckily she does have supportive parents, who know she would never do that and trust her enough to take her word for it. There is a lot of judgement though from the Kooks, she's labeled a cheater and ridiculed for it. Which is why she keeps herself inside, but then Pope and the fan account they run help her.
Kiara's overachieving girl: Eldest daughter of workaholic parents, she had to pick up the slack at home and look after her younger siblings. Trying to juggle school, taking her siblings to clubs and getting homework done etc. She doesn't really have much time for herself. Then her parents get her a weekend job (saying she should be grateful for the opportunity and good for college apps).
This is obviously a lot for anyone and she overworks herself to the point she's sick. So summer rolls around and she takes a couple weeks out to get better. The internship she was offered is declined because its a competitive slot, so it goes to the next person who can be there for the start date. For her though its a blessing in disguise, as it allows her to do the things she's never got a chance to.
John B's overachieving girl: She's trying to gain her father's attention who is always travelling for work. Don't think she'll ever give up trying to get his attention though, she looks up to him a lot.
Meeting John B was by chance and they are both lonely, so they easily fall into each others company. Brings out her curiosity and adventurous nature.
Rafe's overachieving girl: Well, she's very much like Rafe. Comes from a rich family like his and its ingrained in her that she will go into the same business they do. She's from a very strict family, what they say goes and there's no room for anything she would like to do.
She does get out of it though. Uses college as a way out, just didn't count on meeting Barry who offered her an out. Her new found environment isn't far off from her family. There's a familiarity that feels normal, but there's that added edge of danger to remind she got out. Meeting Rafe feels like fate though for her, there's too many similarities between them.
Hope you like :) and if you have any more requests send them in - Yiiyii

More JJ and burnt out overchieving kook please, anything...
Ok ok, add on from this prompt I intended for it to be a smaller fic but here you go:
Tumblr media
The temporary ban on the country club seemed to fall away quickly, JJ eyeing her up across the decking. There’s an added confidence to her walk, short skirt fluttering around her thighs, giving him a brief view of the cotton floral underwear he watched her put back on this morning.
She fit in her natural habitat, slight smile stretching her lips as she greets one of her sister’s friends. Beside them though, nothing compares. There’s an edge to her that they don’t quite have. She might be dripping in cash, but it’s the subtle acknowledgement to the waiter and the clear thank you for their service.
Bidding the girls around the table goodbye, she raised her oversized sunnies on top of her head. Her gaze tracing up JJ’s form, pausing at the white shirt folded up to his elbows. Smiling she walked up to him and wiped the sheen of sweat off his forehead, her signature silk handkerchief going back to her small handbag.
The small opening where the servers dip in and out giving them enough privacy to interact. Part of him wishing she’d do the same out on the restaurant floor for all to witness. As if reading his mind, she plucked his red tie in her hands and twirled it around in her palm pulling him down closer to her. Nose to nose, lips parting.
“You look so cute in this,” she whispered, nose nudging to his before her lips trace the shell of his ear. “Wear this later for me?” She released the tie and pushed him back as if she hadn’t said anything.
For once JJ is scrambling, head racing at her boldness. Dimples setting his cheeks as he just nodded his head.
“When you said you wanted to make the most of your membership. I didn’t think you meant this.” He said leaning into her, palm steadying him against the wall as he dipped to meet her gaze.
She side stepped him, spinning round to catch his wandering gaze. “That’s a bonus.”
He swatted the hem of her skirt, “for you or me?” He smirked, not needing an answer. “I finish my shift in a couple hours, you want to leave with me?”
“Sure.”
The persistent ringing bell behind them, interrupted the small moment. The one she couldn’t help, but play along with. Good girl, bad boy and from the wrong side. Her stepmother Gloria, had warned her regularly not to hang around on the cut or the unsavoury people that lived there. The dragon had no idea how much alike she was to a parent on the cut, but used her money and status for manipulation.
“Hey, I gotta get back.” JJ said pulling her out of her of head, his palms smoothing down her arms. The action calming her, he had a knack of breaking through to her.
She watched JJ disappear through the restaurant and out onto the deck outside. Pushing her self off the wall, she followed suit and searched for her father. His table vacant, nothing but empty coffee mugs piled upon it. Turning, she collided with another body.
The sunglasses on her head askew, the apology on her lips stopping short when she came face to face with her ex boyfriend.
He rights himself, pressing his palm against his chest to smooth the wrinkle from his blue shirt. “Well good to see that there’s nothing in your hands this time,” he chuckled, the crooked grin plastered on his face telling more of him having the upper hand now.
“Don’t tempt me.” She poked the jug of water at the table, thought wandering to dumping it on him. She tried to avoid his path as she made a move to escape, but his hand circled her wrist.
“Now I get it,” he leaned down, voice lowering. “You’ve got it hard, hell everyone knows you don’t get it at home. So you have to demand it elsewhere.” He shrugged, fingers digging into her wrist making sure she stayed to listen.
She didn’t need to say anything, one warning left before she’s banned for good and kicked out. This was the one place she could escape her family, but still keep up appearances, even if she did hate everything about it.
“But, who would have thought you’d be slumming it with Maybank over there.”
Heart thumping in her chest, she glanced to the side and JJ, his movements stilling for a second a few tables away. The tightness around her wrist disappeared, fingers tapping to her cheek and reverting her attention the Kook in front of her. She just hoped JJ hadn’t overhead the conversation.
“Wonder what Gloria would say?” He hummed, the thinly laced threat encouraging him to step closer. “I mean least you’ll get some attention at home.” He shoved his hands in his chino pockets, oversized watch hanging over the edge.
Swallowing the lump in her throat, the burning bubble of anger stung the back of her throat. She wanted to scream in his face, push him just like he had. Too much talk, status crushing her like every other thing in the figure eight.
Not like JJ though. He let her breathe.
So she took a breath, “did I not give you enough attention?” She tilted her head, bottom lip jutting out in faux concern. “I mean there’s no excuse to cheat on your girlfriend. But then again I should have known, you cheat on all your school tests.”
The smile dropped from his face, back straightening as he tried to make himself taller. The stare down to her wavering in the wake of knife she dealt him. She too could afflict pain with words just like him. Two can play that game.
It amazed her how the people around them turned a blind eye. Not that she expected anyone to step in. In this scenario she’s seen as the bad girl, the one who treated her boyfriend wrong and not the girl who was hurt by the boy. Maybe she’s not entirely good though, she knows she has a place and part to play. Not good enough for her family and too much for anyone else.
She glanced to the side once more, tall blonde nowhere to be seen.
Looking back to her ex boyfriend, the rose tint faded. The mask dropped for her, his flared nostrils and clenched fists enough to get her to flee. She pushed her way through the late lunch crowd waiting for a table and threw herself out the door.
She couldn’t help but laugh, a sick flicker of Deja vu welcoming her in the name of JJ Maybank. Joint between his fingers and a cloud of smoke curling out from his lips.
The boldness of this morning slipping away. "Ready Maybank?" She asked shaking her car key in her hand.
**
JJ scanned the landscaped driveway, large house coming into view. He’d been there many times before, but had only came from the dock at the back of the house. His odd gardening jobs leaving him strictly to the back lawn and pool.
“What about your parents?”
She tapped her fingers against the steering wheel, waiting for the garage door to roll up. There’s a split door to the right side reserved for her car. “Dad’s playing golf and then going to the office. Step moms at the spa.” She stole a glance to JJ, there’s an odd distance between them and it wasn’t their status.
JJ’s been staring out the window for most of the drive, jaw clenched and legs facing the door. She’s convinced he heard her ex and she's wondering why he agreed to come home with her. The knot in her stomach tightening at the thought of disappointing him.
Climbing out her seat, JJ’s brows furrowed as the garage door rolls to a shut. She grabbed his hand, not bothering to turn the light on as she moved in muscle memory to the door.
“I never go in the front way, I have a side door through the garage,” she said over her shoulder, his hand still clasped in hers as she guided him up the steps.
A heavier door appeared at the top of the stairs, she unlocked it and kicked her shoes off on the welcome mat.
The open plan room didn't showcase much of her status. The space might be big, but the double bed in one corner and a sofa in the other makes it look vacant. The walk in wardrobe is half full, a desk on one side for her studies and the bathroom beside it. There’s an upright piano collecting dust, she hasn’t played since she broke her hand years ago.
“Huh, not what I was expecting.” His eyes roam the open plan room, there’s not much to look at, but it’s a far cry from his own home.
There’s no personal touches, no colour to the walls. Half unfinished brick, plastered walls left unpainted. Rugs overlap the tiled floor, the only warmth other than the sun shining through the large windows that look out to the back garden.
“Ahh yes,” she nodded. “After my little blow up at the country club. I’ve been banished to here, out of sight out of mind right.” She rattled the door closest to her bed, giving up when the lock keeps it in place. She doesn’t tell him how it’s the only way to the main house and it’s locked most of the time to keep her out of the way.
She opened the small fridge, beer bottles clinking in her hands. JJ doesn’t waste anytime necking the cool beer. There’s an uncomfortable silence between them, normally they’re crashing lips and tangling limbs, no need to speak. JJ loosened his tie, buttons tearing open as he leant back on his elbows.
He brings the bottle back to his lips, chasing the last drops of beer.
Sitting back on the bed, she turned her body to face him. "Look what happened at the..."
JJ silenced her, lips crashing into hers. Fingers working on the buttons of her blouse. "Stop overthinking it." He said between kisses.
She doesn't make a move to shred him of his clothes, her hand tugging the red tie and yanking him to hover over her.
He smirked down at her, “you really must like slumming it," he whispered in her ear.

Rafe x Burnt out, overachieving Kook
Tumblr media
She doesn’t know how long this burn out will last, it’s been nearly a year of using the same excuse. Her parents have given up, hell even she feels like she’s given up. The pressure of her perfect family ruining her chance to choose anything she wanted. No she has to do what the family does. No room for anything else.
The partying and a new found freedom at college gave her the edge to fall away from everything her family forced her into. She’d become everything they despised. She always did do everything out of spite. It was her life.
She dropped out of college and started dropping in on Barry. A somewhat shady character that she actually formed a friendship with, a soft spot they held for each other. Or more of an exchange between them. Her calculating and keeping check of his loss and profits, him letting her have room at his and giving her some safety.
So when Rafe started turning up at Barry’s, he couldn’t help but notice the kook looking more out of place than him. Papers spread out on the table, ink staining her arms where she leant against them. Creeps eying her up like she had no idea the way she looked. She did not look like she belonged there.
On the second visit, she’s got Rafe smiling and nodding his head. They’re talking business and numbers, she’s vouching for him and warned him that if he wrongs her there’ll be consequences. Barry’s lounging in his chair, smirk tugging at the corner of his lips as she wraps Rafe around her finger without even knowing it.
She knows that she shouldn’t be there, the added edge of danger the only thing making her feel something. Maybe a way to stop her from going too deep or further over the edge. Not even Barry can keep her safe, some nights the guys can get carried away but she’s more than prepared.
She locked her door behind her, gasping at Rafe sitting on the edge of her bed with his head in his hands. He’s had too much of something, that all she has to do is poke him to fall back into the bed. She lets him sleep, taking a seat in front of her door, back pressed to the door and her head leaning against the side of the wardrobe.
Rafe wakes the next morning, squinting at the morning sun breaking through the shitty blinds that do nothing to shield it out. His gaze falling on her, asleep by the door. He crouched down, tucking the hair out of her face and tapping her cheek gently. They exchange a few words, interrupted by the banging on the door, it rattles the wall but the lock doesn’t budge. What she doesn’t expect, is Rafe unlocking the door to square up to the person on the other side. Something sparks inside of her, she didn’t even need to ask for his help. No exchange or I owe you.
She finds herself welcoming Rafe in each time he appears. Her room and Rafe being the only safe places for her in the world. He gets it too, his family doesn’t leave him much space for himself either. There’s only a matter of time before he explodes. Nights with him make it bearable, he’s tough but gentle. Again it’s a give and take, but only if she wants to. Nothing is expected or forced, she likes having control too.
Some nights he takes her away, her arms wrapped around him as he speeds through the roads on his motorbike. The wind nipping her bare skin, face pressed into his back. She can feel his laugh shaking through the embrace as he dares to gain more speed.
They sneak in Rafe’s room, she’s long forgotten the feel of luxury bed sheets and on demand hot water. He jokes that she’s only using him so that she can use his shower. She spends ages under the waters pressure, his soaps and shampoos calming her. The dirt and grime washing away.
She keeps out the kook lifestyle, only tiptoeing back in when she stays at Rafe’s. Either way she’ll be gone before he wakes the next morning. She doesn’t want to bump into the Cameron’s, a bit too close to bumping into her own family if they found out where she was.
So what if she’s burnt out. Least she’s ruining her life her own way and not by the hand dealt by her family.

John B x burnt out, overachieving Kook
Tumblr media
She’s an only child, not heard from her father for months. His job giving him an escape from the outer banks and allowing him to travel for months on end. Her mother long gone and happy with another family, one her daughter couldn’t bring herself to admit she wanted.
Her father an eccentric man, leaving her subjects and courses to learn. If she can get a certificate or a grade she’ll complete it. The collection of extra skills longer than a bookworms reading list.
It doesn’t matter what credit she gets, it still won’t bring her father home. She’s resorted to emails, the only way she can reach her father and wait for his late response. And even then it’ll be all about him, the discoveries and adventures.
She remembers most of her childhood on her father’s ship. A random guy acting as her tutor, teaching her the basics and bizarres in education. She’d learnt more about sea life and men during those trips. The salty waves, disgruntled replies of men when their search didn’t go as planned. She knew when to be quiet and stay out of their way, knew that asking too many questions annoyed them.
So when she meets John B, she can’t help but not ask too many questions. The boat she’s stuck on, the engine not starting. She knows the look, that one of “poor kook doesn’t even know anything about boats”. Except she does, she just can’t open the hatch to look at the parts to fix. The night darkening and she expects to be sleeping on the boat until John B shows up.
She explains that she can’t open the hatch, the torch dropping as she shines it on his flexing biceps as he attempts to open it. John B notices her silence, only a thanks escaping her lips after allowing him to fix the boat with no questions asked.
John B passes her a few times on his boat, gaze flitting to him briefly with no acknowledgement. It’s not until Kiara tells him how she sailed around the world with her father, that he becomes intrigued. He’s not heard much of her before, she didn’t go to the schools here and was always a mystery.
So when he catches her in passing on her boat again, he stops and steps back on her swaying boat. She asks what he’s doing. He says that his boat sounds a bit clunky and needs someone to hold the torch up for him so that he can see what he’s doing. She fights the grin, knowing that there’s nothing wrong with his boat, something she’ll admit later when she’s more comfortable around him. He tells her to go fishing tomorrow morning, not leaving any room for a no. But she doesn’t want to say no.
The wallet in the boat storage holds all of her qualifications. John B finds it when she asks him to get the first aid kit from there, the cards unraveling and touching the deck. The gash on her shin taped together with what ever in the kit, one of the certificates in first aid and life guarding. John B can’t help but laugh, but is silenced when told that she did it to fill the absence of her father. She doesn’t know anything else but the sea.
She finds herself either on the John B’s boat or the chateau. Her boat pulling up alongside John B’s. Once again he’s resting in the hammock, as if waiting for her. It’s become routine, a crate of beer tucked away in the cooler box in her hand. He reaches out and tugs towards him, body falling into the hammock. A few whistles and howls from Pope and JJ who make their way to them. The fish they caught now on the grill. Kiara giving her the rundown of their day whilst she was away.
The more time she spends with John B her curious nature starts to come back and she asks him questions. He’s never heard her talk so much, that he tells her to slow down. She thinks she over stepped, apologising for annoying him “I’m sorry, just tell me to shut up if I’m annoying you. You know.” She shrugs it off, eyes not meeting his. “It’s alright, no need to apologise. Just you talk so damn fast I can’t keep up.” He massages the tension out of her shoulders, reassuring her that he likes the way she always asks questions.
John B asks just as many questions, she lights up every time she gets the opportunity to tell him about certain memories or facts she’s learnt. And if they don’t know, they work it out together. Both looking over maps and searching for the next best thing. All whilst being in each other’s company. Anything to spend some time together.

Kiara x burnt out, overachieving Kook (gxg)
Tumblr media
She’s known Kiara since she was a kid, used to go to school with the Pogues until her parents put her in the Kook academy. She takes her role seriously, she’s the eldest sister she has to set an example for her younger siblings.
It’s beginning to weigh her down though, her steps dragging the closer she gets to achieving more than she bargained for. That she’s struggling to keep up with everything she’s earned. She forgotten what it’s like to blow off some steam, to hang with her friends like most teens her age.
She tells herself, much like her parents do that she should be used to it by now.
Just like her mother, nothing she can’t do. But that’s a lie, because she can’t swim in the ocean or float in a pool.
She’s got to pick up the slack at home, drive her little sisters to sports practice and make sure their homework’s done. All whilst her parents continue to build their legacy, so they neglect their eldest daughter and give her a job at the office, telling her it’s an opportunity she should be grateful for. She’s only wasting her youth and giving up her weekend for who knows what.
It’s midsummers when she comes across Kiara again. The deep rims under her eyes not easily concealed with makeup, the dress she had fitted loose from the stress and weight loss of running around after her family. They make jokes about the crushing weight of their status, smiles faltering as they notice the same sadness glistening in their gaze.
So when the summer begins and school is out. She allows herself to fall, she welcomes her parent’s disappointment, because she’s pulled herself thin and can’t get out of bed.
It starts as a cold, even in summer it was a blessing in disguise. The internship she got discarded and her body finally started to feel light instead of dead weight.
Floating in the pool and soaking up the sun seems to be her favourite thing. She doesn’t have to look after her siblings, they’ve all gone to grandmas.
The house is eerily quiet but she welcomes it. She eats ice cream for breakfast and cereal for dinner. No one to tell her how to plan her days or ask her for a ride somewhere. After a week of relaxing at home, she’s adamant about swimming in the ocean.
She’s met with a smiling Kiara at the beach, wet curls springing to life. Kiara teaches her to stand on a surf board, later that day she buys a board for herself.
And her summer is spent learning how to surf. Kiara following her into the waves, evening surfs with the sun dipping to the horizon. The girls sitting on their boards watching sun slip beneath the sea.
Their tangled limbs in bed, salty scent lingering in their wakes. Soft embraces, gentle grazing touch as they pass like ships in the night. Swapping bikinis and plaiting their hair before they go for a morning swim.
She finds herself a home, the Pogues welcoming as soon as Kiara introduces them. She’s know that Kiara vouched for her, the thought of someone in her corner warming her heart. The hammock at the chateau is hers and Kiara’s favourite spot, fireflies flitting around.
Summer was her time, she knew the grind would return when the beginning of school started again. But for now she’s savouring the warmth of summer, the lulls of the waves and the art of existing without her families responsibilities.

Pope x burnt out, overachieving Kook
Tumblr media
She’s got a supportive family, so her downfall from the top felt so much harder. The abrupt drop, she wasn’t expecting. She’s been hiding in her room for half the summer. Too scared to ruin her families image.
The one comfort to her at the moment is a fan account she runs online with another person who she met online. They both love the same sci-fi books, even go back and forth between the direction of the next book. Their admin names hidden beneath their favourite characters.
Little does she know, she’s messaging Pope Heyward. Fellow geek, thats had the same love for the books. They read a few chapters a week and talk about it over the weekend. Character flaws, messages written in a language only the readers would understand.
Mid summer on the hottest day of the year, she reveals hers worries. Pope’s too smart though, he picks up on everything figured out who she is as soon as she shares with him. Before he can reply, she’s logged offline. His response deleting in the face of her absence.
Pope’s been online a bit too much. His friends keep telling him to come outside and away from his room. She hasn’t been online since, he would know. Even if he was with the Pogues he’d be checking the fan account on his phone. Hoping she’d appear online.
She answers the door after the storm, Pope standing under the porch with a bag of groceries in his arms. She thanks him and takes the bag from him. Her gaze wandering to the fan t-shirt and a smile tugs at her lips for the first time in a long time. They exchange a few comments about the book, surface level nothing too detailed. Pope too shy to reveal himself as he stares at the now shut door.
When she pops up online, he can’t help but smile. She mentions the guy who she sparked a conversation with and jokes that it could have been him and she wouldn’t have known. It is an obscure book that wasn’t that mainstream. An old sci-fi from the eighties with a terrible front cover that both made them laugh and want to read it.
It’s not until they bump into each other at the library and go to grab the same book. It’s the new released book and it’s the only one there. Both gripping the book, her neck craning to meet his eyes. The lit phone screen in his hand catches her attention, the fan page glaring at her in the dingy lighting of the rows of books. His reply still in the bubble and not yet sent. It’s then when she realises who he is.
They hang out in the library, laughing at how they’ve been right in front of each other. Numbers exchanged, notes scribbled in the book as they take a turn to read a few chapters before returning it to the other.
It doesn’t stop there though. They make it a tradition. Meeting at the library, picking a book to share between them for the next few weeks. Silent giggles in between the aisles of books and stealthy unwrapping of snacks. The librarian telling them to be quiet even though they’re the only ones left in there.
When Pope introduces her to the Pogues, she easily fits in well. She might be a Kook, but she’s just like Pope. Heated debates between Pope and her cause the other Pogues to bet on who will win.
They both like to play the sci-fi card game (the one from their favourite book), which the others can’t quite seem to understand. She makes up a simple way to play all whilst it can still be played as it’s supposed to. She only plays for trades, lost her expensive sunglasses to JJ who wears them every day now. Traded bracelets with John b and lost her bike to Kie (who refused to take it, she does give Kie rides though so she sits in the front basket).

JJ Maybank x burnt out, overachieving Kook
Tumblr media
She comes from a large family, always compared to her siblings. Doesn’t matter how hard she works, she can’t quite get the approval or praise from her family. She wants it so bad, wants to be seen.
She’s ruined herself trying to live up to the family name, wasn’t her fault she had a full on mental breakdown at the country club and is banned temporarily. That kook ex boyfriend had what was coming in her eyes.
There’s rumours swimming around that she’s addicted some sort of drug but little did they know it’s just in the form of a tall blonde guy who allows her the space to breathe.
JJ Maybank sees her across the perfect lawn he’s cutting. Her shoulders drooped, arms crossed making her appear smaller as the housekeeper shouts at her to stay outside till the kitchen floor is dry. He doesn’t know that’s the only bit of attention she receives at home.
He hasn’t seen her before, apart from later that day when she’s chucking anything she can get her hands on at the kook that angered her. There’s a fire in her eyes that he’s all too familiar with, the helplessness clawing out, so she lashes out the moment someone hurts her because she’s at the end of her tether. Holding on, to god knows what.
Then there’s the meet cute. JJ’s hanging round the back of the club after his shift, smoking off the stress of the day when she crashes through the fire escape door. Her hands resting on her knees as she catches her breath. The blood drumming in her ears and the thumping in her head seem to silence as his voice filters through the mess in her head.
He doesn’t say anything else just gives her his joint and pats her back. She watches him zip away on his motorbike, the burn on her fingertips reminding her of his gift balancing between them.
The second time he runs in to the her, she’s kicking the shallow edge of water with her boots. He’s wading out of the sea, surf board tucked under his arm. She’s not dressed for the beach, clunky boots, heavy clad in short overalls that showcase her broad shoulders perfectly. The bucket hat hiding her eyes, nose slightly bigger but fit her face and accentuate the shape of the Cupid bow lips. She’s not alone though, an older sister calling her from the row of towels accompanied by some more girls topping up their tans.
The third times the charm though. JJ hears her soft voice, not the scratched scream he first heard in her moment of rage. They might not be from the same place but they’re cut from the same cloth. Tongues dripping with hatred for their fathers, last names weighing them down.
She doesn’t know how long it’s been since she could breathe. The knot in her stomach disappearing as soon as she sees his smile. The comfort they give and find in each other.
JJ pushes her out of her comfort zone, gives her space to feel her way around and find herself. There’s so much potential in the unknown, the expectations set by her family falling off like shredding your armour after a big battle.
The moment to be still. To relax in his embrace, to be held. She just wanted to be seen and held.
