Unbalanced mixing is nothing new, I can think of examples from as far back as the 90s that do this too. I rewatched the matrix recently so there's an example that's fresh in my mind, I absolutely love it to death but half the movie is barely audible whispered dialogue and the other half is explosions and sick industrial beats.
Why do people need subtitles to watch a show in English? I don't get it. What is wrong with the ears of young people?
