“I am nervous when writing and all my thoughts are short of breath. And I feel constantly that I cannot completely justify the expression. That it tastes bad.”

i don’t think love at first sight exists but i think you feel something. not just romantically, but when you meet anyone who’s going to be important to you…anything stronger than what you were feeling before, without even knowing it. attraction, dislike, whatever. something you might forget the next day but in that moment it’s something. like a little jolt in ur chest idk.

there’s this concept i’ve been thinking about a lot and i wanted to put it in words. i drew some very basic diagrams (i’m no artist, as you will see) to help explain what i’m talking about, too.
the thing is, you know how people talk about Images of themselves? we often say things like ‘you’re in love with the image of me, not who i really am’ or ‘this is a performance, not the real me’.
Tumblr media
it’s as if to others, we assume our real selves are blurry, hidden, silent, and it is the sparkling Image of ourselves that we control, to some extent, that gets seen instead.
i’ve also seen this talked about from the concept of wearing masks. i thought about the idea of masks… about the idea of some of us wearing small, barely-there masks that only cover our eyes, but some of us wearing immense masks covering major portions of our bodies. this idea of being the wearer and the mask, as if the masks are a valid part of us, too.
Tumblr media
but neither the image binary nor the mask metaphor really struck me as true to what i conceive of as personhood. so i thought, instead… concentric circles of personhood. is there a concentric circles of personhood theory somewhere? a theory that places a person’s life force at the centre of their concentric circles, and their personality the circles themselves, in layers in a spectrum of being easily visible or deeper submerged.
Tumblr media
and i think this explains how people see each other, too. when getting to know a person, people have the choice of walking further into or further away from the circle. some people come closer to the essence of the person than other people. you choose how deep into the circles you walk.
Tumblr media
but (and this is the most important conclusion i have come to) it is only when two life forces ignore their personalities, constructs of themselves, and both walk to the edge of their circles to touch each other that you get real connection, real love. when you put aside your ego and walk to your furthest edges, just to touch a brief sliver of another being. that’s what true connection is.
Tumblr media
i’m thinking that this explains it better than other ways of explaining it i’ve seen. but i’d love your thoughts on this, too. feel free to tell me them.
