The Score is created by three incredible artists: Lauren Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Pras Michel, all of whom have had their own successful solo releases.

My favourite thing about Hip Hop is sampling. This album is rich in odes to amazing tracks, including The Flamingos (in Zealots), Enya (in Ready or Not), The Headhunters (in Ready or Not and The Beast), and Ramsey Lewis (in Fu-Gee-La), as well as covers of Bob Marley and the groundbreaking Killing Me Softly, originally by Roberta Flack.
Can we just take a moment to praise Lauren Hill and her extraordinary voice? This songbird is what turned me on to The Fugees, and made me really listen to what they had to say.
Recently, I heard Mista Mista with entirely different ears. As a teenager, I thought it was making fun of homeless people. I didn’t know any better. Now, I hear it for calling out the prejudice that plagues the less fortunate on the daily.
The Score is one of the most melodic, musically creative, vocally rich Hip Hop albums released to date. Sociopolitically, it’s so much more important than how it makes me feel and dance, but I’m at a loss for the adjectives to do it justice.

Homework is one of the most experiential and experimental albums ever recorded. Layers upon layers of noises and beeps and synths and clicks come together to create one track flowing into the next for an experience that will make you smile, especially if you listen to it from start to finish, and on really great speakers. Try to separate the sounds as they enter each track, weaving a story of excellence, and then are receded again, stripping it down to nothing.

And then there’s Da Funk, which put Daft Punk on the map. Same formula, but with a much richer sound bite.
And Around The World? Man, I remember dancing to it in the clubs when I was 18 and really enjoying doing that thing where with every change in the music, you do a different move. Plus lyrics!

Tahliah “FKA twigs” Barnett conjures images of a far-away planet where cats purr melodies and you can see music swirling through the air like puffs of gossamer in the wind.

The long-awaited follow-up to LP1 offers her signature, ethereal vocals paired with otherworldly, emotional elements and goosebump-evoking notes.
Smoky and silky, MAGDALENE turns feminism on a dime in the title track, about the “creature of desire” when she sings: “A woman’s work / a woman’s prerogative / a woman’s time to embrace she must put herself first.”
Rapper Future joins on the Hip Hop anthem, “Holy Terrain,” adding a modern twist on what’s bound to become a classic release. Pitting sweet, tinkling pianos against coarse, rasping synths, the avant-pop album is the equivalent of a robust glass of Cabernet and dark chocolate in a candlelit bubble bath.
Gloucestershire-born Barnett—who reportedly got her nickname from her penchant for cracking her joints loudly—channels Kate Bush’s strange lyrical style in tracks that smack of heretics, conjuring the hotly-debated Mary Magdalene, who was either a prostitute befriended by Jesus Christ himself, his wife — or both.

Dreamy downtempo make Suzuki an amazing album to relax to. Richard Dorfmeister (of trip hop production team Kruder & Dorfmeister) pairs up with Rupert Huber to create melodies that tickle the amygdala. Infused with jazzy moods and soft scatting, its perfect with a glass of smooth Pinot.

In a genre we can easily call Nu New Wave, Cut Copy are definitely masters. Think boppy synths, deep vocals and a light-hearted feel even when the lyrical matter is moody or despondent. Oh, and most importantly, it sounds like it was released 40 years ago when in actuality, it was within the last decade (or so). In Ghost Colours is a brilliant throwback to a simpler time of hairography and hairspray.

This album may not be widely considered her best, but it’s my favourite of Eryka Badu’s repertoire. It celebrates music in a groovy, laid back way—including the chill Bump It, which is literally a song about speakers—word.
An appearance by Queen Latifa (and others) on Love Of My Life Worldwide is a special treat.
Considered the Queen of the sub genre Neo Soul, Badu’s voice has been compared to Billie Holliday’s. I love how she scats her way through tracks rich with samples, making this perfect album to relax to.

Pharrell’s falsetto is fantastic—as always—and the entire release plays up a comedic vein. Lightly playful, often sexy, somewhat charming. Even a little zombie reference. A great listen.

Ok, this masterpiece deserves two posts, one for the 1984 original release and another for the 2015 Paisley Park Deluxe Remaster (look out for part 2 on Thursday, although I’m only going to count it once on #mytop50).
Dearly beloved. We are gathered here today to celebrate the genius that was Prince.
The flawless way most of the tracks on this album blend into the next. His seven-octave range. His devastating falsetto. The funked-out jams. The way he dripped with sex. His joyful whoops. His conceptual talent. His perfect, gleaming, compact physique. His enthralling weirdness.
His purpleness.
The Purple Rain soundtrack is a synth-driven, psychosexual odyssey with a beautiful balance between ballads and electric bangers, full of fantasy, yearning, passion, and romance.
Let’s Go Crazy: “So when you call up that shrink in Beverly Hills / you know the one, Dr. Everything’ll-Be-Alright”
When Doves Cry: Every. Fucking. Word... So. Perfectly. Selected. I can’t pick a favourite line... ok I’ll try... “Touch if you will my stomach / Feel how it trembles inside / You’ve got the butterflies all tied up / Don’t make me chase you / Even doves have pride.” And you’d be hard-pressed to find someone born in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s who won’t swoon at hearing the first few notes, you know it.
I Would Die 4 U: “I’m not your lover / I’m not your friend / I am something that you’ll never comprehend / No need to worry / No need to cry / I’m your messiah and you’re the reason why.”
Purple Rain: Uff the strings in this one, just glorious! “Purple rain, purple rain / I only wanted to see you bathing in the purple rain // I never wanted to be your weekend lover / I only wanted to be some kind of friend , hey / Baby, I could never steal you from another / It’s such a shame our friendship had to end.”
Darling Nikki: “I knew a girl named Nikki / I guess you could say she was a sex fiend / I met her in a hotel lobby / Masturbating with a magazine / She said how’d you like to waste some time / And I could not resist when I saw little Nikki grind.”
Take Me With U: “Come on and touch the place in me / That’s calling out your name / We want each other oh so much / Why must we play this game?”

No Longer At Ease, Nneka Egbuna’s sophomore album, continues her lyrical war on injustice. She includes more vocals in her native Pidgin, all in her exceptional, breathy voice, lending a truly powerful vibe to the album.
Her success with the single Heartbeat, and subsequent box single release, which includes remixes by the likes of Chase & Status (with the coolest fucking remint name: “We Just Bought A Guitar Remix), Koolkojax, and Crada, plus collabs with Nas, brought Egbuna to the North American stage, and this is when I first heard her unmistakeable voice. I immediately fell in love. The lyrics are astounding, “You have goals to achieve / but the roads you take are broad and heartless / The wounds you make, you’re not aware / You throw stones / Can’t you see that I am human? I am breathing, but you don’t give a damn,” they give me chills. And the way she pumps her breath during the chorus leaves you breathless.

More amazing lyrics:
Suffri: “Una dey talk of ur elections, Nigerians, Nigerians / We dey talk of the redemptions, naija, naija / We dey talk of resolutions, oya / Tell me where the solution because nothing dey change.”
Gypsy: “Will u recognize ur soul is naked before u / Will u hide ur own sin when u know the truth / Will u drown in ur own tears and self destruct / Will u break the rules and be concerned? // No but we will wonder for the rest of our lives / Will we break free from our imprisoned minds?”
Streets Lack Love: “For nearly 60 years in Nigeria / People have been suffering from gas flaring, and pollution / Because of big oil extraction companies such as Shell, Chevron, NNPC” (I love how she calls them the fuck out by name!) “The Niger Delta, the Warri, and the Ogoni people have been pleading for a change / They have been fighting for justice / But the companies, Europe and Nigerian government do not seam to care / Do not seam to be bothered, they can’t be bothered.”
From Africa 4 U: (this one is especially folksy in rhythm) “Africa no one else to go save you but you / It’s time to arise / Take away your pride, it is time to arise, yes.”
Focus: “The flesh has overcome the spirit, eyes opened but shot, sight blurred / Can’t see the road because I’m scared of the lights / I gotta go on, I gotta move on, we gotta go on, we gotta move on / ‘Cause if you don’t search for the truth your soul will definitely remain undone.”

The genius of Pixies’ Frank Black shines through in an album that so well embodies the mid-‘90s, I feel 15 again when I listen to it. Sister duo Kim and Kelly Deal add a dash of surfer rock to a cauldron of sultry alt rock with a pinch of punk, all wrapped up in some pretty sick album art. Title track “Last Splash” has me pulling out my platform army boots and blue eyeliner.

Despite the pious outcry upon the release of this stellar album, Madonna was not actually just singing about sex. Granted, tracks like “Erotica” (‘let my mouth go where it wants to’) and “Where Life Begins” (‘can you start a fire without using wood?’) range from tongue-in-cheek at best to outright graphic, but Madonna explores many other beautiful and sad emotions throughout the album. Passion in “Deeper and Deeper,” grief in “In This Life,” and jealousy in “Thief of Hearts”. She’s integral in the women’s sexual liberation movement and iconic in the evolution of pop music.

The Followills have such an interesting perspective on music, it’s hard not to love everything they do. Caleb’s vocals are unique as fuck and they’re one of the few truly rock bands left around. The lyrics are chock full of obscure symbolism, like the reference to “le petit mort” or “little death” in Sex on Fire (‘feels like you’re dying’), which is a description used in French for orgasm. Sometimes sardonically self-deprecating (‘what a night for a dance, you know I’m a dancing machine’); sometimes chillingly crafty (‘with fire in my bones and the sweet taste of kerosene’)—both from Revelry—but every turn of phrase shows their unique style.
It’s one banger after another on this album.

Blasting from my speakers today is a great lil throwback from my teenaged years that honestly didn’t fit into my musical tastes back then, and yet captured my ears and heart, time after time.
Waterfalls: a sad account of men in our lives who behave in destructive ways, bringing tears to our eyes and beg our lonely cries.
Creep: a woman’s gotta do what a woman’s gotta do. Periodt.
Red Light Special: here’s some pole dance fodder. Use accordingly. (It also works real nice in a playlist with Prince’s Blue Light).
Kick Your Game: a sultry, seductive ditty. TLC were so damn good at switching gears from powerful forces to coquettish foxes and back again.
All the interludes in this album kick serious ass, but Sexy (Interlude)? hahahahhahaha
Featured on this album: BustaRhymes (Can I Get A Witness Interlude), Andre 3000 (Sumthin’ Wicked This Way Comes), Prince (cover, If I Was Your Girlfriend), The Sugarhill Gang (interpolation, Switch)

Brian Ferry’s dreamy, warbler-like voice makes Roxy Music an utter treat to listen to. It’s the perfect sound to make love to or just snuggle up in a warm blanket with a fragrant glass of Merlot. The music is rich with horns and strings and leaves no emotion unexplored. I absolutely adore this album, and have since I was a child.

One of the greatest wordsmiths of our time. Kate Tempest poetically proves you don’t need to rap about big screen TVs, blunts, forties and bitches to be successful in the hip hop scene.
Let Them Eat Chaos is an intricate story of seven Londoners—Gemma, Esther, Alisha, Pete, Bradley, Zoe, and Pious—all awake at 4:18 am on a stormy night. Their desolate tales are carefully woven into each track which explores the motion of their lives—or is it Tempest’s?—and culminate to the moment where “the sky cracks a wide-mouthed grin and unleashed all the water it has carried.”

1. Had to be released within my lifetime (June 1978 to present)
2. No skipped songs because annoyed. The whole album has to be enjoyable to me.
3. Minimum 6/10 goosebumps on at least half the songs. The music must be mesmerizing.
