Oaaah agree, The Infernal Devices is great in terms of whump and otherwise! The whump isn't only Jem-centric though, there basically isn't a single damn character that doesn't go through some hurt/comfort at some point, both emotionally and physically. (The same goes for The Mortal Instruments, by the way.)

Not to give too many spoilers, but the character Will that's mentioned in the original rec has been cursed so that everyone he loves dies. If I remember correctly, he only feels safe befriending Jem because Jem is already dying anyway. Like. If that isn't emotional hurt/comfort, I don't know what is.

(I loved those books so much as a teen <3 They were the first full book series I read in English and they were such a big influence on how I write today!!)

Books: Whump Edition

first of all, holy heck… the response to my / anon’s request for whumpy books has been amazing (not to mention a little overwhelming)! thank you all for your suggestions; i can’t wait to read all these. ;) let’s get to it, shall we?

Dick Francis books : “Dick Francis’s books are all wonderfully whumpy. They are murder mysteries set around the British horseracing world (Francis was a jockey before he became a writer) and despite being a bit formulaic they are wonderfully well written and fun to read. If I had to recommend one to start with, I’d say “Odds Against (Sid Halley #1)”, as it is the first of the Sid Halley books and he is my favourite Dick Francis character.” // submitted by @nemo-forever and @alipeeps

The Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer A. Nielsen : “The first book has some nice whump (the main character gets whipped and then is taken care of in a dungeon cell), and the second book has such good whump that I just open it sometimes and read the whumpy part when I need some good whump. The Last Herald Mage Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey : “If you like fantasy books then Mercedes Lackey’s The Last Herald Mage trilogy is fairly well-peppered with whump too, mainly for the main character Vanyel. There’s whump in all three of the books, from what I remember, but especially the first and the third ones.” // submitted by @alipeeps

Doctor Who Tie-In Novels : “Some of the Doctor Who tie-in novels have some very nice whump (I’ve mostly only read the 10th Doctor ones personally).” // submitted by @alipeeps

Stargate Atlantis Tie-In Novels by Martha Wells : “Oooh ooh and while we’re talking tie-in novels, oh my, the Stargate Atlantis tie-in novels! Now quite a few of them are good for whump but the best ones are the ones by Martha Wells - now SHE knows her whump! The Maximum Ride Series by James Patterson : “Basically there’s a lot of whump to go around for all the characters but Fang gets a fair share of it and boy, is it amazing. From passing out mid-flight (oh yeah, they can fly) from blood loss to being beaten up, there’s just a lot of it.” // submitted by @aliciaaanne14

The Infernal Devices Series by Cassandra Claire : “I know The Mortal Instruments is pretty big, but this prequel is amazing. Jem Carstairs is basically a cinnamon roll that needs to be protected at all costs because he’s genuinely such a sweetheart. But he’s got a condition where he became addicted to a drug (yin fey) by some demons and he needs the drug to survive. So you can imagine what happens. There’s so many great scenes in this book and lots of after-care, meaning caring from Will. <3″ // submitted by @aliciaaanne14

Acheron and Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon : “They’re pretty much every whumper’s dream. The two main characters go through every torture and torment out there from the beginning to the end of the book, but not to the point that it becomes pointless. Brainstorm: what would missing-nin!Kakashi wear?

For those unfamiliar: I'm currently writing a Naruto AU on AO3, in which Kakashi is a missing-nin (I won't spoil much more of the story ;)). The fic is currently eight chapters long.

I was writing along, happy as a clam, when I realized a thing. I'd written in one of the earlier chapters that Kakashi was wearing a flak jacket and hadn't given much more thought to it - of course he'd be wearing a flak jacket, he always wears a flak jacket.

Except, in this fic, that didn't make any damn sense. And thus ensued a brainstorming session that I absolutely devoted far too much time to (and, if any of you has a good suggestion, I'm absolutely prepared to devote even more time to).

Just because my process might be helpful to someone else, or maybe just fun to read, I'll share my clumsy process here. (I'm studying Communication and Multimedia Design, so I know a thing or two about the process of designing, but I'm relatively new to AUs, so bear with me ;))

The knowledge we're working with

By chapter 8 of my fic, we've established a handful of things about this version of Kakashi:

He is a missing-nin, and has been since the day after the Nine-Tails' attack.

He still finds himself in fights occasionally (so his clothes need to be comfortable enough to fight in, while also protecting him).

He does not like the title of missing-nin; he would rather not be recognized as one, and doesn't wear his Konoha headband. Also, Naruto thinks that he might be a civilian when they first meet, implying he also does not dress like a shinobi.

...It's specifically the third point that made me realize I'd overlooked something. Yeah, a flak jacket ain't gonna cut it.

Commence the Brainstorming!

If a flak jacket wasn't going to work, then I'd need to give Kakashi some other kind of armor or protection from weapons - something that's hidden.

Does something like that exist in canon? Yep!

According to this Reddit post, it's probably chainmail or kusari. We can at least assume that it's something that helps protect against weapons, because that makes more sense for shinobi than, say, mesh would. As we can see, it's canonically easily hidden underneath another layer of clothing.

So, that was my first major decision. No more flak jacket: instead of that, Kakashi would wear chainmail that he'd probably hide underneath a sweater or something. (More on that later.)

More changes that I decided to make:

His hair is slightly longer than in canon, long enough to cover his Sharingan, since he no longer has his headband to cover his Sharingan with.

Since Kakashi left Konoha when he was in ANBU, I like the idea of him outgrowing his ANBU boots at some point and swapping them for civvy boots instead.

(I had some space left in the lower right corner and decided to sketch out what a wrist splint would look like, just in case I messed that up in my writing as well. Thankfully, it looks like I described that one correctly even though I originally used the wrong source '^.^)

If you look closely, you can see "cargo pants??" written in pencil in the middle of the page. That's because my sister made this suggestion as a joke and I ended up liking it a lot.

Commence Round Two of Brainstorming!

Another issue with removing the flak jacket, is that Kakashi is missing a bunch of pockets that he would normally store scrolls in. Additionally, since he prefers to look like a civilian, he wouldn't be wearing weapons pouches either.

Enter cargo pants. And hoodies. Which both have pockets, and both would probably look inconspicuous enough to be mistaken for civilian clothes.

It took me a second to figure out whether hoodies and cargo pants even exist in the Naruto universe, but fortunately they do. There's a couple of kids in hoodies in this screencap, and there's at least cargo shorts (the third kid on the right (edit: also Naruto lol)).

So, here comes the second round of sketches:

I wasn't originally sure about the hoodie, since the emo vibes are Pretty Strong and I'm not sure if that's what I'm going for, but then I painted with it a bit and... well, it's growing on me, honestly. It's also practical, since Kakashi could use the hood to hide his Very Recognizable hair from shinobi without having to use a henge or genjutsu. Not 100% sure about the colors yet, but I figured something dark would make sense, as it'd be practical to not stand out in the night.

I also tried to pull inspiration from Kakashi's canon civvy outfits, but I gave up pretty quickly. I feel like my version of Kakashi takes himself a little too seriously to walk around like Sukea or like he does in the Steam Ninja Scrolls arc in Boruto (though it was really fun to draw hahaha).

Conclusion?

I feel pretty good about the combination chainmail-hoodie-cargo pants, though if you guys have any suggestions, please let me know! I'm very new to this sort of thing, so if you can give me some advice or ideas, it'd mean the world to me!

Summary:

Hatake Kakashi has not always had the most peaceful of minds. His childhood and the time that he spent in ANBU have left their marks on him, deep and painful mental scars. For most of his life, Kakashi believed that those scars would never stop hurting. He’d quietly accepted that his past would haunt him forever.

But then he was put in charge of Team Seven, and things slowly started to change. Slowly but surely, Kakashi’s time in Team Seven makes the darkness in his mind a little lighter. Some days, he forgets that the darkness was ever there at all.

Other days, though, that darkness rears its ugly head again. And on those kinds of days, the other members of Team Seven take it upon themselves to help their sensei out.

With their help, the darkness never sticks around for long.

Or: One of Kakashi’s solo missions makes some nasty memories resurface, and Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke try to make his day a little less crappy. And in classic Team Seven fashion, their methods of cheering him up are, well, unorthodox to say the least.

Very nice Vigilante Midoriya. We also have Vigilante Hatsume and Vigilante Shinso which I adore. They make a fabulous team. Some brilliant plays from Hatsume and a sibling bond between the three of them make for hilarious banter.

In which the class becomes babies one by one. Kinda adorable. Sad that it’s unfinished. If I’m remembering correctly, there’s some serious angst that pops up, and the fact that its a dead fic does not help with that. I still love it though.

You know that thing where an orchestra swaps instruments, and like, some of them get it right away, but others have no clue what they’re doing? This is that but with quirks, two unwilling participants, and also Emotions by Sif

I LOVE THIS ONE. Serious insight into Bakugo’s quirk. And Momo content. Which is almost always a win. It’s a one shot, but does have a home in a series called Nitroglycerin’s Parables.

Boku No Toddler Academia by Todobaku-Shoukat

Rated: G

Word Count: 37K

Summary: “Fuck, Bakugou thinks as he runs to class. He is terribly late. He throws open the doors, expecting to see his classmates sparring. What he sees instead are crying toddlers and a very stressed looking All Might.”

Bakugo is essentially a mother to too many children. Very sweet. Features a much softer Bakugo who somehow knows how to parent. The villains are here too and they are also pretty adorable as children.

Katsuki and Izuku’s Excellent Adventure(s) by pepperfield

Summary: “The 1-A dorms hold a bunch of insomniacs. Many of these kids spend their nights in the common room, wide awake.

Mostly because UA’s teachers are idiots. And because they tend to waltz into the 1-A dorms in the dead of night with problems they don’t want to admit they have.

These are five completely normal nights in 1-A’s common room.

It’s SO CUTE. They got so attached to the babies and Baku was actually kinda nice. So that’s nice.

Word Count: 361K

Summary: “Quirks. Superpowers that most anyone holds nowadays. Quirks can range from anything from running a millisecond faster to the strength to change the weather with just one punch from the wind pressure it generates. Quirks are everything. Quirks define who you are. Every child is elated to discover their quirk and find out who they truly are. This happens around the ripe age of four years old. Some are natural-born heroes. Others are perfect for other occupations such as baking or being an artist. With such a high hope for the future that a quirk brings, one would think they would be happy to discover theirs and reveal just how useful they can be.

But…

What happens when your quirk dictates you as nothing more than a doll to be used by others?

Izuku Midoriya found out four-years-old that not all people are created equally.

He found out when he drew the short end of the stick of luck and ended up with a quirk worse than quirklessness.

He's dealt with it long enough.

Now it's time for Izuku to take hold of his own strings and stop letting others control his life. He won't be a doll forever.”

I absolutely adore this fic. The ACI are hilarious together (you’ll understand if you read it). The beginning is rough. Because abuse is a thing. And then it gets better. And then it gets so much worse so quickly. We’re on the road to recovery right now (77 chapters in) but still kinda painful.

This stuff wasn’t in the job description. But the homeroom teacher finds that he honestly doesn’t mind as much as he pretends to.

Anyway, protective Mic and/or Eraser...

The first one the comes to mind, if you don’t mind EraserMic, is Nartothelar’s Mafia AU. An obvious rec.

A soft, cute one is With Our Paws And Claws, by WalkingOnClouds444. In this one, both Aizawa and Izuku are transformed into their spirit animals, and Aizawa’s protective instincts over the cub are really cute.

Complicated Creation, by Elemental, is a huge rec I want to give. Dadzawa and protective Aizawa, joined by a bit of protective Mic, over Midoriya. Big in protective Aizawa, once he starts believing our local green bean. There’s also EraserMic and adopted Shinsou, though they’re not the focus and can be ignored.

Then there’s Who said the only green thing about him was his hair? by TheLegendaryGoblin. Protective Aizawa, but mostly there’s protective Mic. It’s Izuku-centric for the most part, but Mic also plays a big role.

Canary, by cloud_nine_and_three_quarters, has dadmic and protective present Mic, with Izuku. Also a big rec.

The Stray Cat and the Loud Kid by ihopethelightwillshineupon is another cute one. Cute in the sense that I loved their banter here. It’s teen Aizawa&Mic firendship, where Aizawa got hurt fihting a villain and went to Mic for first-aid. Protective Mic in the sense that he patches Aizawa up, I guess.

Bleeding Heart and Trust Issues, by galaxylagoon, is a one-short about Mic finding Todoroki sad about his brother’s death. Mic realizes Todoroki doesn’t have many reasons to trust adults. It’s both cute and a bit heartbreaking.

I have just had the biggest scare with my 13-week-old puppy. She ate grapes! Or, well, one and a half. But she's very young and very small - and grapes are highly toxic to dogs and can cause fatal kidney failure. I called my out-of-hours vet (since it's midnight here) and he was very helpful and understanding which I really appreciate. He told me to monitor her, since she only had a small amount of grapes and inducing sickness in such a young puppy could be worse, and to call him back at 9am (so I'm wondering if I should even bother to sleep since I don't tend to get to sleep until 4 or 5am anymore?).

I really need to calm down since I panicked so hard. Can you recommend anything that I could read or watch to distract myself?

MULTI-CHAPTER

komorebi by tomorrowsrain ─ okay, i know you said preferably no ships (we’re already off to a rocky start FDJFKSJ) but this is literally my favorite team 7 fic ever, it’s impossible for me not to include it. it’s kakaobi, and team 7 doesn’t come in until ch. 3 of the first part, but i highly HIGHLY recommend it. seriously, this is my absolute favorite characterization of the members of team 7 & their dynamic, the author does such a good job of building their relationship from teammates to family. i will say the first chapter is a little disorienting (it’s in first person POV, which i usually tend to avoid when it comes to fanfiction, but the author does it so well and it does shift straight back to third person POV for the rest of the chapters). the author is currently writing the chuunin exams arc and it’s literally everything i wanted.

tides by edenfalling ─ omg, this was one of the first team 7 fics i ever read waaay back on ff.net when i was like, 12 years old. unlike most of the fics on this list, this is set in shippuden, but it’s very much AU/canon-divergent. good character dynamics with team 7 learning how to work together again<3

how to make a team by Pleasedial123 ─ basically, kakashi gets his head out of his ass and actually invests time into strengthening the bonds between the members of team 7. don’t get me wrong, i absolutely LOVE canon!kakashi & i know he did his best (he was traumatized + not ready to be a teacher, i get it)... plus, if he was a good teacher in canon, there literally wouldn’t have been a plot. basically this is me saying fuck kishimoto because LOOK at what we could’ve had!!

and so, the sensei supports his students by ihopethelightwillshineupon ─ this is really more kakashi-centric and it focuses more on his relationship with each of his students than on the dynamic between naruto, sasuke, and sakura (but kakashi is technically part of team 7 so it still counts!!)

ONE-SHOTS

for warmth by magnificentbirb ─ a scene i wish we would’ve gotten in canon.... like you’re telling me there are literally HOURS of filler episodes and we couldn’t get ONE soft, genin team 7 moment?? kishimoto & studio pierrot, you’ll be hearing from my lawyers.

believing in heroes by guycecil ─ another moment i wish we got in canon because like... can we talk about how, in their genin days, these kids are 12 years old. are you fucking kidding me. also, now that i’m skimming over the fic, this may be more sakura-centric than team 7 centric, but i’d still highly recommend!

the pretty one by theformerone ─ it’s tagged as ot3, but i promise there are no ships! like maaaybe if you squint? but i honestly read it as platonic. one of my favorite fics ever tbh. answers the question that i’ve been thinking about since the manga was released all those years ago: what could have happened if kakashi was too late?

take the fight from the kid by theformerone ─ someone tell me why these 12 year old kids aren’t allowed to process anything on screen.... like, right after the wave arc, everything just went back to normal. like okay, yes, naruto had that moment to grieve for zabuza + haku, but i really just wanted to see a shift in the team 7 dynamics and we never really got it. so take this beautifully written fic instead!! god bless fanfiction.

pray my name by Chancy_Lurking ─ ok so this is a fic that i found today and i’m OBSESSED. i do want to warn you, since you asked for no ships: it’s not tagged as ot3, but it could be if you squint. or, you could argue that team 7 is just very affectionate/very codependent. either way, right after i finished reading it, all i wanted to do was curl up in my bed and cry (but like, in a good way).

just killing time by edenfalling ─ a very short but cute little one-shot that i also just found today! same author as tides, so if you read that first and you like their work, you should check this one out! (or vice versa)

did you inherit a sickness? did you blame god? by hotgirl ─ i literally recommend this fic to anyone and everyone because like?? it doesn’t exactly match what you’re looking for but it does have team 7 moments (heads up: it’s implied sns). this is honestly one of the best sasuke characterizations i’ve ever read. 10/10 would recommend.

of bruised brains and dog baths by sweetpotatopie ─ okay so these last three fics might not be exactly what you’re looking for but i’m adding them if/when you’re in the mood for cute, feel-good team 7 one-shots. this one is just a happy, post-canon piece where they actually get along<3

another day in paradise by ohthelinsanity ─ modern au where sakura and naruto bully sasuke, sakura and sasuke bully naruto, and kakashi is weird as shit. the friendship between naruto/sasuke/sakura that i wish i got in canon. hints of past itasaku and implied inosaku, but it’s very much a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment.

gotta see! finally know! kakashi-sensei’s true face! by Lolistar92 ─ my FAVORITE face reveal fic EVER. episode 101 from naruto is the only filler that deserves rights (and maybe the curry arc because i love team gai, the ramen episode, and all the episodes with konoha 11. but mostly ep 101.)
