Fifa World Cup 2022 - Australia announces team - Wreaderpedia
Australia announces team With Mathew Leckie being the other squad member chosen to represent Australia at a FIFA World Cup for the third time, goalkeeper Mathew Ryan will lead the team in Qatar in what will be his third FIFA World Cup.
Aziz Behich, Milos Degenek, Jackson Irvine, Jamie MacLaren, Aaron Mooy, and Bailey Wright will compete in their second FIFA World Cup this year. Seventeen other players will play for the first time in a FIFA World Cup squad.
After a difficult four years, head coach Graham Arnold stated the Socceroos head to Qatar full of pride and confidence. Arnold said, “It’s been a unique and challenging qualification process. We now arrive in Qatar with an excited squad that will do everything possible to make Australia proud on the international stage.
Thirty-two players have made their national team debuts in the last four years. Every player who has supported the team along this journey deserves my gratitude. Every one of the 68 players we called upon during the qualification campaign contributed to bringing us here.
“Our team’s composition reflects Australia’s multicultural society. We are all connected by the same jersey, even if our boys originate from different parts of the globe and have experienced different journeys, said Arnold.
The Socceroos will aim to advance past the group stages for the first time since 2006 after qualifying for their sixth appearance overall and fifth successive FIFA World Cup.
Nine Tokyo 2020 Olyroos athletes are on the team: Mitchell Duke, who is overage, Nathaniel Atkinson, Keanu Baccus, Thomas Deng, Cameron Devlin, Joel King, Riley McGree, Kye Rowles, and Harry Souttar.
Arnold said, “I’m happy with the progress and maturity of this squad, who now get a chance on the biggest stage conceivable.” “We have worked hard to give younger players an opportunity over the campaign, to expose them to international football, to test them against the best,” Arnold said.
At Al Janoub Stadium, the Socceroos face off against the reigning champions France on Tuesday, November 22, at 10 p.m. local / Wednesday, November 23, at 6:00 a.m. AEDT.
