meredith was looking through the shelves in the book store when she saw a familiar face through the hole of a missing book. she couldn’t quite put her finger on who the man was, or how she knew him. wanting a closer look, she walked over to the aisle he was in. she pretended to look through the books, glancing over at him from time to time until she finally got the courage to say something. “you might think i’m crazy, but i swear to god i know you from somewhere..” she said in a hushed voice, not wanting to interrupt the other shoppers.

“excuse me for not knowing these rules. I must have been absent that day of life when ‘the rule book of meredith’ got passed out to us all. damn, I just wish I could remember what appointment kept me so tied up to miss out on such an important day.” the sarcastic drawl dripped from every syllable. dark eyes rolled as she commented on his reaction. “listen……I’m a weak man. I can only do so much. I may not be your normal trash man but I’m still recyclable piece of man so leniency must be allowed. she’s cute and kept giving me recommendations and I just…I caved!” hands raised in surrender. “I admit it! I caved! I wanted cute girl to pay attention to me.”

“that, sir, sounds like a you problem,” she quipped back with a smirk spreading across her face. “you should know all about my quirks by now, i mean, really. we’ve been hanging out for how long? and you still question me and my ways. it’s all on you at this point” she stated with a slight shrug of her shoulders. she listened to him talk and as she listened she felt her eyes rolling into the back of her skull. “to quote buzz lightyear, ‘you are one sad, strange little man.’ you can’t just cave for every girl you think is cute, leo. one day a girl is going to recommend a freakin’ unicorn cotton candy bubblegum frilly drink and you’ll have to drink it because you find her cute. i hope i’m not here for that, but it can happen!”

she could tell something was up. the smell of alcohol permeated the air, tickling margot’s nose with the pungency. “really?” head cocked, waves encapsulated in her updo fell around her face. some people though the whole “twintuition” thing was bullshit. but margot knew what she felt, and she could feel her sister’s unease. her uncomfortable air. and how different she looked was a dead give away. the girl in front of her was barely an armature police sketch of the human she knew. but the girl knew better than to ask right out what was going on. that was a sure fire way to insure the conversation would end there. there’d be no way of salvaging any clues. “stomach started acting up, so I decided to distract myself.” she explained, motioning to the computer in front of her that continued to play her movie. “did you have a good time out? any fun stories to share? let me live vicariously through you please.”

rests her head against the doorframe and shrugs her shoulders. “it’s been a long night.” mer narrowed her eyes as she tried to see what movie was on she sisters computer from where she was standing, but her vision was still wonky from her night out. “what, uh, what movie is that? and have you tried eating some crackers? sometimes that helps, right?” she took a microscopic step into her sisters room for a split second, then stepped back again. in the back of her mind she knew that the second she got closer to her sister all of her problems would word vomit out. “it was fun. lots of drinking. lots of drinking. too much drinking, to be honest. nothing else to really report, though..” she said as she looked down at her feet.

“okay, no one asked you to do that so I don’t feel bad.” Leo laughed as he pulled the cup back towards him, giving the girl a little eyebrow raise. “also, it’s dark roast coffee with caramel and two pumps of…almond? I don’t know. I just get whatever the cute barista recommends because I am a weak, weak soul. and it’s good!” he assured, taking a small sip of the contents. his face nonetheless betrayed his words as a small sneer pulled at his lips. “…-ish.”

her jaw dropped at his comment, “you should know better. when i see a coffee i need to taste it. it’s an addiction, an obsession, just a humongous problem which is probably why no one else dares to drink coffee around me.” she observed him taking a sip of the drink, waiting for his reaction. when she saw the man sneer, she couldn’t help but laugh “see, even you think it is gross. never trust your coffee in the hands of anyone except for me, even if it is a cute barista.”

stormy eyes grew bleary as the hours ticked on. a low chime of the grandfather clock their father had unreasonably kept all these years announced the three a.m. time. and yet, margot was still up. her dark circles were highlighted by the artificial blue tinted light of her computer screen. the movie in front of her was barely even watched but it was something to distract from the pain. her stomach was the culprit tonight, sharp pains coming every few moments. fingers lazily glided over her phone’s keyboard, sleepy words left behind. a low creak from their antique of a house alerted her to the stairs, craning her head towards the noise. “mer?” her voice soft yet loud enough to hear. the surprise in her voice was barely masked. her sister was never one to stay out late. even when she was attached to dozens of IVs, margot was the party animal to her sisters homebody. “you good?”

meredith was trying to branch out more. she was going to parties, socializing with people she wouldn’t normally, she even joined a sorority. there was a big party at one of the fraternity houses, don’t ask her which one, she can’t remember. she got way too drunk as she usually did at these parties and she made a few regrettable mistakes that she probably won’t remember in the morning. one of her sorority sisters insisted to take her home around 2:30 am. when they arrived at her house she stumbled out of the car, waved goodbye and made her way up to the door. for being as drunk as she was, Meredith was very considerate as she tip toed through the door way and slowly closed the door. she made her way upstairs practically holding her breath out of fear that she would wake someone up. her sisters voice made her jump and stop in her tracks. not because it was loud, but because she assumed everyone was asleep already. “h-hey, mar” she replied in a hushed voiced, her face turning up to a small smile. “i’m goooooood. great, really” she lied. she walked towards her sister, leaning against her doorframe. “what’re you still doing up?” she asked, her words slightly slurred.

What’s this? [she picks up the drink that was in front of the other person and takes a sip. Without a moment of hesitation she makes a face and quickly slams the drink down. She shakes her head and sticks out her tongue to show how disgusted she truly is] Oh, my god. That is disgusting. Is that unsweetened coffee? Gross, how can you drink that? Why would you let me take a sip? Ew. Gross. Nasty. Blech. Gross. Ew. Never let me take a sip of your coffee again.. ever.

Ongoing thing? What do you mean? [brows furrow in confusion with a chuckle] Okay, come on, I got one in my car albeit it might be warm. Or if you just want to head to the cafeteria that’s a walk’s away we could do that too. I’m game for either. Just don’t want you to throw up again. Wish I had one on me, sorry, usually do.

That sounds bad, huh? It’s just like this stomach thing I’ve had recently. [laughs nervously] It’s nothing, really. I’m feeling.. better already. [gives him a small forced smile] Warm, shwarm. Water is water. I’ll take anything at this point. I usually have one on me too, but I was so freaking thirsty during class that it’s gone now. And I don’t do drinking fountains, so I was out of luck until I bumped into you.

I’m still here, ain’t I? [chuckles, with a shake of his head] I think you mean so you can give them a piece of your mind - and fist - because you know you love me. [teases before laughing and immediately wincing and reaches for the corner of his mouth] Ow. Fuck. 

You say that like it’s a good thing. [rolls her eyes] I’d probably kick his ass better than you did.  [slaps him on the shoulder] Have you even tried fixing yourself up? Neosporin, alcohol, shit like that?

[slows down a bit seeing her trying to keep up, forgetting some people don’t have long legs like him, before looking back at her] Uh, w-well I guess do you go to school too? A-Are you a-a cat or dog person? What are your favorite tv shows and all that? That kind of stuff.

Ooh, okay. I do go t-to school! I’m studying veterinary sciences. What are you studying? And I’m j-just an animal person in general. Asking me to-to pick between cats a-and dogs is literally impossible. Which would- would you pick? [looks up at the sky as she tries to think of an answer to his last question] I-I don’t watch much television. I did really enjoy A-Anne with an E and Bridgerton, th-though. I’m a-a-a sucker for period shows. Hm.. Wh-What else.. my favorite color i-is yellow. I studied art for a few years before deciding on be-becoming a-a vet, s-so I do a lot of art and photography. Um.. I-I’m scared of b-birds which is a fear I’m working on g-getting over because of th-the whole vet thing. I’m a vegan..  [sighs] I’m not a-a very exciting person in all honesty. D-Did I miss anything?

She’s my daughter. Want to help her out a little is all. But she also attends those BYOB parties too. So, who knows. [lets out a breath, unlatching them from her waist and sliding them over] 

[takes the keys and puts them in a jar behind the bartop, grabs her shot glass and fills it, sliding it back over to Carter] Daughter? Didn’t know you had kids.. [writes down “Autumn - $75″ on a napkin and slides it over to her] Don’t know if that’s her, or another Autumn.. but there you go.

[She’d been spending way too much time at the bar it seemed. It probably had to do with her new job. Yeah, that was it.] Is there one there by any chance for an Autumn? [picks up a fry and sticks it in her mouth] Mmm. One more shot, please? And then take my keys because I am in noooo way to travel in a car. [laughs]

[looks back over at the list, skimming it for an Autumn] Well, there might be. There might also not be. Why? [holds out her hand] Keys first, then the shot.

[smiles softly and nods] Sure, y-yeah. Follow me. [starts leading the way] So, a-all I know of you is - is your name… [chuckles] 

[begins to walk with him, trying to stay in stride with him] W-Well, what would you like to know? [looks over at him]

I don’t think that you want to know. Seriously, Ev, I got it handled.

[scoffs as she rolls her eyes] Right. Looks like you have it handled. [crosses her arms across her chest] Why wouldn’t I want to know? I need to congratulate the guy who did this to you. Thank them for fixing that face of yours.
