Of course we ask that all members be over 12 as that is in Discord's terms and conditions. But we are not asking anyone to send in proof of their age unless they explicitly want to so they can gain access to the 18+ role.

Hello! I wanted to bring something to your attention regarding Discord and particularly the Apt502 server which asks for parts of users’ ID for age verification (age and first two letters of your name). I understand the intention behind it especially as someone who has seen instances of minors going above and beyond to enter 18+ servers (using another Patreon account for an adult/parent to name one).

Part of the concern is that Discord saves data that appears on its servers even if Mods promise to delete files etc. So including images of blocked out ID could still be risky with programs being able to uncover blocked information in images some times.

Another issue comes from EU compliant laws and the potential of violating the Discord ToS, particularly in Rules of Conduct and Usage that states you are not allowed to “attempt to obtain passwords or other private information from other members.”

(There’s some debate about EU complaint laws and Discord saying it enforces US laws but also lists itself as GDPR compliant so I’m still researching this to better understand it 😭)

It’s a lot and I’m so sorry for sending this and any stress it could cause, I really am worried about liability and risk to mods and others if a data breach or another issue comes about (discord says it is not liable for content or conduct of any users or servers on the platform, and also heavily encourages people to protect their personal information and not share it). By asking for ID (even parts of it) mods make themselves liable for issues arising from this.

It’s something happening in some NSFW or 18+ servers but it’s risky 😭
