i love that one genre of team whump where there’s a goofball/class clown type of character that gets brought in for questioning and/or tortured.

they crack jokes and play it off like it’s nothing when they’re getting dragged away. “haha, don’t worry guys, these assholes won’t get a word outta me!”

the rest of the team stays downstairs and they hear screams. it’s so terrifying to hear them scream, because the team has never seen or heard that side of them before.

when they’re brought back down, thrown onto the ground of the holding cell, they’re covered in cuts and bruises. their nose is bleeding, their lip is cut, their clothes are disheveled, and they can barely lift themself off the ground.

they laugh it off again. the team surrounds them and asks what happened, if they’re okay. and they laugh, like always, but…it’s different.

it’s shaky, it’s afraid, it’s…broken.

“i-i’m fine, you guys, jeez! n…nothing i can’t…c-can’t…”

and they just break down. they let it all out, burying their face into the leader’s shirt and sobbing into it.

hours pass before they calm down again and the leader confronts them.

“did…did you tell them anything?”

“…nah.” that familiar, toothy grin. “i had better things to do.”

I think the whump community is the only place you’ll find “fix it fics” that make the outcome of an incident much worse than what happened in canon.

I am a slut for that moment when the whumpee’s hands get pulled behind them to be tied or cuffed.

Bonus if they’re lying face down on the ground.

Bonus x2 if they have their hands above/on their head and the whumpers pull their hands down and back.

Bonus x3 if they wince or grimace while it’s happening.

Bonus x4 if they’re getting cuffed/tied willingly because they are sacrificing themselves for someone else, and they’re not resisting, but the whumpers still treat them as if they’re going to escape at any second. Cue gunpoint, manhandling, etc.

That’s the good shit.

i love tough characters with potent fears!! a fighter who flinches at any touch to their throat. a protector who panics when they feel drowsy or dizzy. a caregiver who has a panic attack when they’re presented with a wound they can’t tend, pain they can’t lessen. a villain who can’t stand being towered over, pinned, grabbed and kept in place. a torturer who is calm and collected always, unless they feel restraints around their wrists, then they struggle so hard that they injure themselves, unable to calm down until they’re freed. characters who are known for being strong, but everyone knows their one fear, everyone knows that it can unravel them in a matter of seconds.
