When commenting should the reader only praise?
honestly, unless the author has explicitly asked for constructive criticism and feedback, i think so.
99 percent of people who are writing and sharing fanfiction (or creating and sharing an art form) are doing it for free, to be able to engage in their communities and have discussion and build relationships. they aren't doing it because they think they're gonna be the next stephen king or picasso, so receiving criticism (or even constructive feedback) can really set them back and discourage them. there's also a lot of people who use it as stress relief and therapy, so, you know, if your stress relief becomes stressful because it's getting picked apart...
there's also a big difference between "huh, this theme is interesting but the idea was poorly executed and the story could benefit from xyz" to "i didn't like it therefore it sucks". that nuance is missed a lot. i've been writing fic for nearly 15 years now, and there seems to be more and more people who treat creators like content cows instead of people and get enraged when they don't get exactly what they want (i guess entitlement is a good word here?).
tl;dr unless the author of the content you're engaging in specifically says, "i'm looking for constructive feedback here" you should probably just say something nice about it - or, to quote ye olde fanfic authors, "don't like? don't read."

Go read an old fic.
There’s such recency bias in fandom. As an author you post something, get a few reactions, and then it goes off into the bin. As a reader you check the tags, see what’s new, and move on. But a lot of old stuff is really good. It’s just sitting there, gathering dust, waiting for someone to take a peek.
So go on. Treat yourself.
Read an old fic.

life's too short to write for an imaginary critic that you fear will hate what you wrote

➡️ Content warnings on fiction are a courtesy.
➡️ Not every medium of fiction and storytelling has or is expected to have content warnings or extensive tagging.
➡️ Print novels do not traditionally warn for content in any way.
➡️ Until AO3 came along, fanfiction did not traditionally warn for content in any significant way.
➡️ An author is only obligated to warn for content to the degree mandated by the format they publish their fiction on.
➡️ Content warnings beyond the minimum are a courtesy, not an obligation.
➡️ 'Creator chose not to warn' is a valid tag that authors are allowed to use on AO3. It means there could be anything in there and you have accepted the risk. 'May contain peanuts!'
➡️ Writers are allowed to use 'Creator chose not to warn' for any reason, including to maintain surprise and avoid spoilers.
➡️ 'Creator chose not to warn' is not the same thing as 'no archive warnings apply'.
➡️ It is your responsibility to protect yourself and close a book, or hit the back button if you find something in fiction that you're reading that upsets you.
➡️ You are responsible for protecting yourself from fiction that causes you discomfort.
