Postcard
Final Postcard design
For my final postcard design, I decided to go for the desert styleframe from my film. I felt that out of the three designs that I had, it was the most cryptic and interesting to look out.
During the crit, I was advised to make inprovements on the desert design by adding more depth of field to the landscape. In addition, they advised to make the foreground hands as big as possible to make the depth more obvious.

During the crit it was clear that out of the three designs I made, as seen below, many felt that the eye design was the most effective. Hence, I decided to go with it and just made all the necessary improvements. Easter Holiday
Task:Scene:Finale and Rendering
After a a very long journey filled excitement, trials and tribulations, I have finally reached the point of finishing the film. Here, my last animation task was to create a short and satisfying closing scene. I wanted the closing scene to be reminiscent of the beginning of the film. Therefore, I decided to create a similar layout just like the beginning but different to to some extent. To help explain myself better, below shows the contrasting styleframes.
It is evident that insects are a motif in this film, hence the below image gives an explanation.

What is the significance of this scene?
This scene shoes how th glory and beauty of country has dissipated.All the beautiful pictures, rich in tradition a culture have turned to ashes. The custom of sharing and taking care of people, and the land, has been completely neglected by the governing oligarchy.
However, the hand taking the picture represnts that me, as a director, is making stride to make a difference. As a student, I can only do as much, hence I want to make best use my platform to voice out the truth and to encourage more people to do the same thing. . Therefore, butterflies starts to appear as I dust off the image.

Animating the insects, is really fun especially capturing their natural movements. Normally, I animate the insects in a seperate Photoshop file from the master file, to make it less strenuous on my computer.

Easter Holiday
Task:Scene 14:END
Finally, I come to the end of the film. Here, I need to show how the once beautiful country, has completely transformed in a state of dissaray filled with pandemonium and anarchy.I want the edning of my film to be the complete opposte of the beginning to show exactly how the country has transformed. When brainstorming for this scene, the first thing that came to my head was the illustration below.
First styleframe
Throughout the whole film, hand has been used as a motif to represent the people's dwindling hope, hence my first instict was to draw a hand soacked in blood as shown above.However, I was not really convinced with this styleframe, hence I just decided to use this styleframe as a basis for the scence.

As you could see, I still took the idea of red sea and the hand and just added more background destails. To get a better idea, below shows the final outcome of this scene.

What is the significance of this scene?
The end shows a sea of blood which represents Philippines and it people who have suffered and lost their lives because of the leader's greed who puts their interest first. Rather than help the country rise up, the leaders has only caused the country to regress.

Create the background elements
This was just a matter of photo manipulation and experimenting what works or not. To help explain this scene better, below is the breakdown of the symblosms.
Hand :this represesnts the dwindlig hope of the country, which ultimately disappears. The hand stretches from the depths of the sea seeking for help, but with State in complete disarray hope seems implausible. Therefore, the hand disentagles and flies away, just like the many Filipinos who have not choice but to leave the country beacuse of poverty.
I animted this hand at the very beginning of the term last year while brainstorming, not expecting that it would be really useful in the film.
Statue: From the beginning of the film, I tried to personify Philippines as a woman who gave birth to a beautiful land filled with glory and beauty. Therefore, woman's collapsed statue represents Philippines in a state of stagnation and petrifaction. Her eye moving represnts how Philippines not completely dead but rather in stupor. Hence, hope is still possible as long as the people will work together and put their differences and interests aside.
My vision for this scene came from the unfortunate flooding in the Philppines, as seen below. This picture literally presents the country as a sunken ship.
Post Production
Here, it was just a matter of arranging all the elements together and fixing the camera. Also, creating subsidiary elements like the the clouds.

Week 24
Task:Scene:24:Poet
This scene is dedicated to show how I am just a young poet who begs for everyone to work together to remove the veil of ignorance and make the difference in the workd. This features the final narartion of the film, which is more intimate. Below you could see the narration
For this scene, I first thought of doing a rotoscope of my face while I monologue. Below shows my initial styleframes.
However, I though that maybe a better way of presenting my face is by having it in on a newspaper and then it gets animated. Below shows the styleframe.

What is the significance of this scene?
This scene represents, my audacity to create a film that feature such a heavy message. This film is not meant to blame and put fingers on anyone, but rather it is show the truth. My face on a newspaper, represnts my sincere devotion in unveiling the truth. This value constrasts how newspapers in the Philippines work; they work under the influence of money. They fail to show the truth and revamp it with lies, which helps protect the oligarchy. My face on the newspaper, represnts how I am the news.
The face opening and the skull showing is my literal take on the idiom "to flesh out". Also, it represents my honestly as I dug up and uncover the truth.

Photomanipulation of my face
After taking a reference photo of myself I manipulated it in Photoshop and then turned it into a smart object, nested from the main file.
Then it was just a matter of combining the smart objects and animating it on a master Photoshop File
Post Production
Finally, I compiled all my Photosho files in After Effects to be edited.Here, it was just a matter making the newspaper move and adding an overlay animation.

Week 24
Task:Scene: 12: Blaming
This scene is the continuation of Scene 11 and it was primarily based on the styleframe below.
Like the previous one, I was not utterly contented with it hence I improved it as seen below.
Here is the animation, which I have previously animated at the start of the term. Doing all these 2D aniamtions were extremely exciting and I enjoyed every single bit of it. Below you could see Part 1 of this scene.

What is the significance of this scene?
This scene represents the unveiling the truth. The hand oepning the mouth signifies my attempt as a director to show the audience the outcome of the leaders voracity. Here, I took gluttony in a littereal sense by opening the clowns mouth. Inside, the audience see a skeleton chained,which represents how because of the leaders' greed the poor become poorer chained into poverty. Furthermore, the hand that comes out from the skeleton's mouth represents the last bit of hope of the people, which eventually vanishes away, hence they too, perish as seen by the smoke.

Week 23
Task:Scene:11: Blaming
This scene suppose to reprents leaders competing each other for dominance, instead of working together to make a difference. Below shows my initial design for this scene.
This styleframe was based on the previous animation that I made below. Although, this styleframe would work, I found it necessary to still change it.

Compared with the first styleframe, this new one is definetely more intriguing and interesting. The dark newspaper, helps accentuate the character better.
Below is the final outcome of this scene.

The fast movement of the animation and the haphazard movement of the newspaper, gives the scene a sence of urgency and energy that immediately captures th audience attention, and hence the message of the scene. The fast movement represents everyones urgent desire for the leaders to start working together as one collective democracy and not oligarcgy.
"The real difference between oligarchy and democracy is wealth."
Since, I have already animated this scene right at the beginning of the term, I only needed to do outlining and colouring.

Week 23
Task: Scene 10: Blindly
This scene is sbout showing how the leaders are just idling. It is suppose to represent how they have the power to make a difference, yet they act blind about what really is going on. Below was the old styleframe that I created for this scene.

After long brainstorming process, I have finally figured out how I wanted this scene to look like. I find that this styleframe effectively conveys the true meaning of oligarchy; this cleverly shows how the modern Philippines is being ruled and controlled by a small group of powerful people who owe their power to weatlth.

Fortunately, I have already animated the eye and the only thing I needed to do, in terms of animation, is to add more inbetweens to make it smoother.

Why female character?
The female oligarch at the centre represents the former President Cory Aquino who changed the Philippines Constitution. Her familily are one the riches people in the Philippines and they have formed a political dynasty. Above shows, a brief history of oligarchy in the Philippines
Next Task:
Create the background
Initially, as you could see from the above animation, the background newspapers is very static. I thought that a better way to make the background more interesting is by adding agroup of blinking eye characters and overlying moving newspaper animation.

Week 22
Task: Scene 9: Dollars
For this task I need to create a scene wherein I display the true greed of the leaders. Below, you could see my initial style frames from my first storyboard.
As you could see from above, the styleframes are very poorly made. In addition, in lacks any depth and meaning especially with the use of close up a shot. It fails to capture the true walloping power of the ruling oligarchy. As an audience, I am not convinced that this styleframes represents the immoral act of the oligarchs.
Therefore, I re-created a new styleframe as you could see below.
I find the new styleframe more engaging and fascinating. Here, the demented looking clown is so interesting and I find it soo effective in showing how the leaders are eccentric, self-serving human beings.As I have mentioned before, the clown represents the leaders alter ego that they hide from the public. Below shows distinctly what I mean.

What is the meaning behind this scene?
This scene represents the farmers'struggle to get out from the control of the economic ellites/ leaders in the oligarchy. Farmers are one of the most vulnerable people in the Philippines who are constantly victimised by oligarchy. This scene is inpspired by the Hacienda Luicita Massacre, where farmers fought for their right for their land. This scene represents their struggle to get out and are trapped inside a never ending loop of subordination.

Here, the first thing I did was animate the clown. Fortunately, I already managed to animate in at the beginning of the term and the only thing I needed to do was to add more inbetweens to make it smoother. Below shows the animation.

Week 22
Task: Scene 8: Filipino
According to my original storyboard, below was how I first imagine presenting the Filipinos suffering.
The reason that I abandoned this idead was because I felt that it was not creative and original enough. I felt that it is better to use metaphor to really emphasise the Filipino's suffering. Hence, below shows the new scene.
The hands coming from out from the ground, represents how the Filipinos are so buried deep down into poverty and the hands sticking out of represents how helpless and powerless they are.

What is the meaning behind this scene?
The vines opening up, represents unveiling reality and showing the detrimental impacts of government's action. The TV Zooming out to join the hands in the desolated land, represents how those Filipinos who have fled are not any safer from the government. The crane taking the TV reinforces how the overses Filipino workers are often fished out by corrupt leaders and take advantage of their remittances. Furthermore, the clock represents the urgency for change to happen as time is ticking.

Week 22
Task: Scene 8: Filipino
This scene requires me to show the struggles that of every Filipino experience as they are compelled to leave their country and the people they love.
This idea was based originally on the first styleframe that I made for my animatic. In my Production Bible, I explained that one of my inspirations was Banksy, hence the reason for the black silhouette sytle.
However, I decided that I needed to change it to the design below.
I find that this new design conveys more sadness. Also, compared with the first one, this new one possesses such fragility and empathy.For this new one, I decided to use blue ink instead of solid black colour as I found the black ink soo bold and domineering. In addition, the blue thin ink looks more fragile and nostalgic.

Rotoscope the hands and figures in the stickynote
I divided the rotoscoping work to several Photoshop files to reduce the burden on my RAM. Therefore, per Photoshop file I could animate two sticky notes and hands without it crashing. The process in creating sticky note and the hands are all the same, hence it was just a matter of getting everything done.
For each files, the stickynotes were created by creating smartobjects which are nested files. Below, you could see how these nested files look like.
Next Task:
Animate insects flying
As mentioned before, insects play a huge role in the narration of the film. Hence, throughtout the film we see transition of the intesects; from butterflies to flies and moths. The flies represents how the Philippines and its people are slowly decaying. In addition, in the Philippine culture moths especially death head moth is regarded as a symbol of death.Therefore, this represenst the lives lost as more and more Filipinos leave the country.
Below shows how vulnerable overseas Filipino workers are.In addition, the risk they take just to provide better future for their families back home.

Week 21
Task: Scene 7: Mothers (Part 2)
My second task for this scene is, to improve the scene below.

However, before I could actually do this particular scene I need to create a way to transition to this scene from the eye animation. Therefore, below is transition that I decided to create.

Why vines around the TV?
As seen on the draft animation that I initially made, the TV monitor was initially in an ominous room. However, I decided to change that as I thought the TV being outside in the wild trapped by vines represent how nature/ Philippines trying to reclaim its land.
Compared at the beginning of the film, here nature/Philippines is portrayed as almost dead as it has lost its bloom and flowers. In addition, its colours has dissipated. Below, you could see the trasnformation.
This scene was created by doing the following subtasks:
Create the eye inside the Tv
Vines photomontage
As you could see I created everything in Photoshop. For this task, since, the eye has already been animated, I only needed to animate the overlaying lights on top. For the vines photomontage, it was just a matter of image manipulation, which was fast and easy to create.
Insects animation
For all the insects in my film, everything were created in Photoshop using puppet tool, transformation tool and etc. Making the insects move were just a matter of creativity and using everything you know about photo manipulation.
Next Task:
The last task for this section is to re-create the hand animation, which I have already animated.

Why choose the aesthetic for the hand?
The sketchy aesthetic helps give the animation a very sentimental feeling. The ink on the paper is remiscent of posted leaders, creating nostalgia. Also, the thin ink used helps reinforce how fragile and delicate the moment is, espicially with the used of stained paper.

Next Task:
Animate the hand holding a remote and changing the channel
The reason for adding this element is because, I want it look like my thumb is flickerng the channel. In addition, I want to emphasise how I, as the director have complete control on what I want show the audience. I want to show the audience the truth, hence I changed the channel.

What is the hidden sybmolism with the flowers wilting and butterflies flying away?
The flowers wilting symbolises the hope left in the country, which eventually wilts away, as more Filipinos leave the country. Likewise, the butterflies symbolises the Filipino workers leaving filled with hopes and dreams.

Task: Scene 7: Mothers

This inital animation, is very dormant and lacks any kind of visual interest. Therefore, I decided to improve it by animating the background and having the oligarch character sit down on top of the TV.

In this scene, the first female oligarch character is introduced. This is just to reiterate the fact that this film is not trying criticise any specific individual, but rather the ruling oligarchy.
Why is the character flickering?
This represents the ruling oiigarchy's precarious nature. In addition, their ability to flicker and transform from one form to another shows theit ubiquitous nature similar to a pest.

Week 21
Task: Organise Scene production.
After finishing the previous scene,I needed to create the next scene based on my draft animation shown below.

Before Week 18, I have clearly organised by animation tasks based on the draft storyboard that I made. Therefore, Scene 7 and Scene 8 is based on the draft animation above. I decided to divide the scene to seperate subscenes and tasks since I knew that It wiil be such a heavy workload if I just treated it as one.
What is going on with this scene?
This scene represents the leader casually lodging on their thrones as they simply flicker through the TV screen. The chicken and alligator scene transitioning inside the TV screen and the hand animation afterwards represents how reality is often obscured for the public people. In addition, as mentioned before, media and journalism in the Philippines is unrealiable and they often conceal the truth. Therefore, this scene represents how the truth should be set free.
