The way that we learn about Helen Keller in school is an absolute outrage. We read āThe Miracle Workerā- the miracle worker referring to her teacher; sheās not even the title character in her own story. The narrative about disabled people that we are comfortable with follows this format- āovercomingā disability. Disabled people as children.
Helen Keller as an adult, though? She was a radical socialist, a fierce disability advocate, and a suffragette. Thereās no reason she should not be considered a feminist icon, btw, and the fact that she isnāt is pure ableism- while other white feminists of that time were blatent racists, she was speaking out against Woodrew Wilson because of his vehement racism. She supported womanās suffrage and birth control. She was an anti-war speaker. She was an initial donor to the NAACP. She spoke out about the causes of blindness- often disease caused by poverty and poor working conditions. She was so brave and outspoken that the FBI had a file on her because of all the trouble she caused.
Yet when we talk about her, itās either the boring, inspiration porn story of her as a child and her heroic teacher, or as the punchline of ableist, misogynistic jokes. Itās not just offensive, itās downright disgusting.

Therapist Red Flags
Therapy is important and can be really helpful, but not all therapists are good at their job. Hereās a few things to look out for when youāre seeing a therapist:
Not listening to what you tell them
Ignoring confidentiality (except in emergencies)
Making you feel judged or ashamed
Ignoring or trivialising your needs
Consistently being late
Making fun of your needs / accomplishments
Being judgemental or critical of you
Not taking your feedback on sessions into account
Condescending facial expressions or body language
Ignoring what you want to do / accomplish in therapy
Talking too much about themselves
Making you feel like problems are all your fault
Being insensitive to your culture or religion
Theyāre making you feel bad about yourself
Using the phone or getting distracted during your sessions
Attempting to make romantic / sexual advances on you
Making you feel stupid or invalid for what you say or how you feel
Forgetting important details about you / your life
Pushing you too hard before youāre ready
You wondering if their behaviour is a red flag. If youāre looking it up then chances are you already feel uncomfortable in therapy. You should never be forced into seeing a therapist who makes you feel uneasy. Thereās no shame in leaving and finding a different therapist.

everyone is transphobic. its built into society. even trans people have to unlearn transphobia and transmisogyny. understand that bias is built into everything, and thus is also built into you
so when your trans friend tells you something you've said or done is transphobic or transmisogynistic, dont get offended. dont take it personally. understand that its hard to tell you that, and when your friend risks your friendship by telling you that, its because we want to keep your friendship, we respect and appreciate you, enough to ask you to be better rather than just leaving. so please be better instead of just getting mad
