The central heat’s been on the fritz for a few days, the winter breeze creeping in through every crack and crevice in this antique of a house.

How did you get here? Who let you in? “Snuck In My Bed” professes innocence. Slow dueling piano chords and a sultry, sinful guitar riff keep up with Made By Crooks’ meaningful, traveling crooning.  Amazing, witty and sparkling lyrics with some funky rhythms that harmlessly say “Did I do that?”

I’m surrounded by people I’m comfortable with. I’ve been cooking and serving the same food for years. Slow days, busy days, they all blend together. I’m out of school, my degree is dusty and faded. Nobody has ever asked to see it. So it sits there, just like I sit here in my routine monotony.

No, that was yesterday. I’m flying west on the only interstate in Kansas. I got weird looks when I told them I was leaving. Breaking free. A tiny match was lit, I filled the gas tank until it overflowed and hit the road.

A coasting steel guitar holds it together, while Brennan Mackey, with some mountain twang, tells the stories of those too timid, too rooted to take the next step. King Cardinal’s “Gasoline” is bluesy, soulful Americana at its best.
