rewatching sherlock while very high (due to pmdd demons) and am just now realizing that sherlock knew as soon as stamford walked in with a stranger that john was being put before him as a potential roommate, and contrived a way to get more information about john.
he saw that stamford didn’t have his coat, and either deduced or calculated that his phone would be in the coat, so he lied about needing to borrow someone else’s phone.
after gaining all the information he needed, he put on a fireworks display of deductions to impress him, so we can assume he instantly approved
