âWell, I donât know.â Saf laughed. âI spend a lot of time there.â she admitted. It wasnât for the plants or a love of herbology. It was the warmth and the instant feeling of comfort she felt whenever she walked into the greenhouse. The glass-paneled building was like a warm hug. âSprout isnât your biggest fan, huh?â
âAnd itâs the one place I wonât go for you, Saf,â she said with a laugh. She liked the greenhouses in theory-plants were pretty, sometimes, from a distance-but sheâd never gotten on well with them. âShe almost kicked me out of class fourth year after I managed to spill all of the bubotuber pus I collected over my partner,â Adelia grimaced at the memory. Definitely not her finest moment.

Adelia avoided most people, as a general rule. She had never been the most sociable person, and the last few years had only made that feature more defined. But Narcissa had a book that she needed for her homework, so she slid into the seat across from the girl and asked about it. The Hufflepuff supposed she could understand Narcissaâs distracted state, given what had happened with her father. Adelia hadnât attended the funeral-she avoided most events that took place in the pureblood circles, much to the dismay of her extended family-but she wasnât so out of the loop she hadnât heard. âI asked if you were going to be using that book for awhile. I need it for an assignment,â she repeated herself, trying to keep her mild irritation at that out of her voice.
Narcissa, ever since coming back to Hogwarts, spent a great deal of time in the library. Perhaps it was the quiet of the area; it led to fewer student interactions. The sooner everyone could move past offering her their condolences for a man they hardly knew, the better, in her eyes. Still, she played the part of the grieving youngest daughter wellâher hair slightly disheveled, clothes a much darker tone. She stopped covered up the dark circles under her eyes to make it look like sheâd been losing sleep over the loss. There was a tension she carried about her, however, that was genuineâa dear friend was locked away in Azkaban, and there was still the issue of her mother to be dealt with. But, at least at school, she found that if she stuck her nose in a book, any book, people tended to pass her a pitying look and move past. It unnerved her; she wasnât someone to be pitied. She knew she had to let them do that. She had to âmournâ the loss, and it had to look real.
However, the book at hand had begun to be less interesting than her own thoughts, and sheâd been peering into the same page for quite some time when she caught sound of a voice next to her. âForgive me,â she apologized, wondering for a moment how long sheâd zoned out. If anything, she must at least look out of sorts, which fit her narrative quite well. She made sure her voice was a tad more unsure that it had been of late. âIâve beenâdistracted. What was that?â

Adelia raised an eyebrow, laughing a little under her breath at how frazzled Remus seemed today. âSome of us have been up for a few hours already, Lupin. Have some coffee and catch up, yeah?â she said with a small smile. âKitchenâs not far at all.â
|| @finestra-startersâ
âI-â Remus paused, rubbing at his temples as a sigh escaped his lips. âYou know that made no sense whatsoever, right? I canât even begin to tell you how flawed that logic is. Besides, itâs far too early for this.â A yawn escaped his lips as he rubbed at his eyes. He was seriously considering ditching and going back to his dorm at this current point at time.

âItâd be horrifying if they became brave.â Otto added, amused by the whole thing, before downing the rest of his drink. âDo you really think something like that would make this party more interesting? Because I donât think it can still be saved.â
Adelia snorted, trying to imagine it. âIt sounds like it would be an unmitigated disaster. People get too reckless when theyâre brave-look at the Gryffindors,â she said, nodding over to where students from said house. âI mean, it canât get any worse, can it?â

Julietâs breath caught in her throat as the other had hugged her back. It brought back feelings sheâd pushed down, feelings sheâd didnât realise just how much sheâd missed. âThereâs always another option,â Juliet spoke softly, shaking her head. There had to be, right? This couldnât just be it. The way the other girl spoke her name made her heart flutter in her chest, god, sheâd missed this. âSince when do I ever go for good ideas?â Juliet teased halfheartedly, a tired smile gracing her lips. âI donât want to see you hurt either, Ade. I can defend myself now more than I could when we were younger. I wonât get hurt. So please, donât walk away again.â
Adelia was so far out of her depths-she hadnât expected any of this, not since she pulled away from Juliet, the most important person in her life, back when everything fell apart. âThereâs always a first time for everything,â she joked weakly. Adelia cleared her throat, âI should,â she insisted, but even as she spoke her hand moved on its own accord, intertwining her fingers with Juliet and giving her hand a gentle squeeze. âYouâd probably be better off if I did,â she murmured, not looking at the other girl. âBut I canât do that to you again. Not when youâre asking me not to.â Not when ever part of me is screaming to pull you in closer, she added silently to herself.

âIâm well aware you think Iâm hot, Parkinson, but thay doesnât mean Iâm gonna agree to whatever you want,â Adelia said, not nothing to look up from her Runes assignment. âWhatâs in it for me if I do this little fashion show?â she asked, finally putting down her quill. âYouâre already filling up my schedule with quidditch, Claire, so give me a good reason and Iâll consider it.â
âYou look pretty hot.â Claire told the other, looking them up and down and deciding that they didnât look half bad. âYouâll do just fine. Safiye and I are conducting a fashion show and we needs models. Are you up for it?âÂ

âThatâs probably more likely, youâre right.â Otto nodded along as the girl spoke. Either way, he absolutely loathed these silly traditions- to him, there was no point to them whatsoever. âCareful, someone will hear you mocking them and will come up with a tradition to get back at you.â
âPeople are cowards,â she murmured, though she was mostly talking about herself at this point. Years later, she was still running from the girl she wanted. âIâd like to see someone try,â Adelia snorted, taking a sip of her champagne, âMaybe then this party would get more interesting.

Julietâs stony look fell the instant the girl choked out the words. Her expression softened and despite everything telling her it might not be a good idea, Juliet closed the gap between them, flinging her arms around the other girl as she pulled her into a hug. âIâm sorry,â She whispered softly into the otherâs hair, swallowing. Sheâd been so angry at Adelia for leaving her, sheâd never really stopped to think if the other had actually had a valid reason. For what itâs worth, Iâm sorry. Juliet pulled away, bringing one hand up to brush the hair from Adeliaâs face. âI know. I just wish youâd told me. We could have made it work. Somehow.â Oh, how Jules had wished theyâd make it work. Her hand dropped to her side after lingering against the otherâs skin for probably too long. âI donât care. Youâre worth it to me, alright? Youâll always be worth it to me. Itâs been years and Iâm not better off, Ade. I want you back in my life.â
Adelia couldnât remember the last time she had felt Julietâs arms around her, couldnât recall the last time she had been this close to the girl. All she knew was that it had been too long, and she let herself give in to her heart and wrap her arms around Juliet in return. She let herself linger in it, trying not to think of how much she missed this as Juliet pulled away. The girlâs hand brushed against her cheek and Adelia had to stop herself from leaning into it. âThere didnât seem like any other option,â she murmured, voice soft as glanced up at Juliet. Adelia wasnât sure if there was another option now, but this small moment with Juliet left her wanting more. âJules,â her voice was barely above a whisper, her tone pleading. It would hurt Juliet all over again if she were to say no. Adelia was still scared-still terrified that somehow Juliet would end up hurt because of her friendship with Adelia, but Juliet was right. It wasnât just Adeliaâs choice to make. âItâs not a good idea,â she said finally. âI'm never going to think itâs a good idea. I just. Jules, I donât want to see you hurt,â Adeliaâs voice was soft as she tried to convey what she was feeling.

Adelia glanced over at the boy, snorting at the image his words painted. âSometimes people are just looking for an excuse,â she said with a shrug, âtheyâre not always brace enough to make a move they canât explain away through silly traditions.â
âWhy is it so necessary to pick someone to kiss at midnight?â Otto asked with a small frown as he picked up a glass of champagne. âCanât everyone just stand around awkwardly as the earth finishes orbiting the sun? Itâs so much more fun that way.â He added, sarcasm seeping through his words. @finestra-startersâ

Juliet couldnât help the smile that tugged at her lips as the sight of the otherâs own lips curving upwards, no matter how slight. How was it the girl still had this effect on her, even after all this time. However as the girl spoke again, Julietâs smile instantly faded, expression flashing with hurt before becoming stony. âYou canât always blame yourself Ade,â She muttered, shaking her head. âCould have. Doesnât mean it was set in stone. Who knows what could have happened between us if you hadnât pushed me away.â Julietâs face fell once more. âI still got hurt you know? When you pushed me away. It was fucking painful,â The girl swallowed as she realised how close they were. âYou do, and nothing you can do will change that. Itâs been years, and it hasnât changed Ade. I donât think how I feel about you ever will.â
Julietâs smile-a rare thing to be directed at Adelia over the last few years-was still one of her favorite sights. She couldnât help but miss it as her once friendâs face became harder. Adelia did this to herself, to Juliet, she knew this, but it still seemed unbearable to watch Julietâs face slip into something so unwelcoming directed at her. âBut it was,â Adelia stressed. Her mind flashed to the image of her fatherâs suffering because he refused to let his only daughter be forced to follow the Dark Lord, to Adeliaâs attack of her own mother to try and stop it, to her parents lying in St Mungos still to this day. âMy parents-â she choked out, closing her eyes to blink away both her tears and the memories she canât seem to unsee. âI couldnât let you end up like that,â Adelia hated showing this much emotion, but it was hard, even after all these years. She didnât know what would have happened had she stayed-had she pulled Juliet even closer like she wanted to back then. Maybe the other girl wouldnât have gotten hurt, and maybe the two of them would have grown into something more like Adelia had wished, but it felt selfish to have risked Julietâs wellbeing just because Adelia was always wanting more of the girl-more of her time, her attention, her touch. And when it came to Juliet, Adelia couldnât bring herself to be selfish. Not when there was this much at stake. âI know,â she said, voice quiet between them. âI know I hurt you, and Jules, for what itâs worth?â Adelia swallowed, working to keep her voice even when she was so close to losing it. âFor what itâs worth, I am sorry for that. Iâll always be sorry for that.â Because in an ideal world, Juliet would never suffer, especially not because of her. It seemed like the better option for Juliet at the time, and Adelia couldnât bring herself to regret keeping Juliet away from the danger that seemed to surround her then, but it stung, knowing she hurt the person she cared about the most back then. Her heart soared at Julietâs words, that the other girl still cared for her, but Adelia pushed it down, doing her best to ignore the feelings it brought forth and the lack of space between them. âJuliet,â she pleaded, voice impossibly soft, âyou canât-you need to realize that Iâm no good for you. That Iâm just not worth it, okay? I already hurt you and I donât want to ever be able to do that again. Youâre better off without me.â

Adelia hasnât really encountered a niffler before-she hadnât bothered to take Care of Magical Creatures, too focused on the courses sheâd need to go into a cursebreaking even as a third year. But she had to admit that it was kind of cute. âTheyâre the ones that like shines objects, right?â she asked, tentatively reaching out a hand to scratch the head of the small creature.

forest hated to admit it, but he was almost glad school was about to start back. everything was so boring around the castle when no one was there and while trips into hogsmeade were fun forest wasnât much for interacting with others and often grew bored. the one place that he always found some comfort in though was the petting zoo. having always been drawn towards animals. which was why he was currently there, sitting and petting a baby niffler which seemed drawn to him. âit wonât bite. theyâre actually really nice creatures despite their habit of stealing.â he said.Â

It was far from peaceful with all of the people and the noise they were making, but Safiye had grown quite skilled at drowning it all out. It didnât stop her from curling up on a couch closest to the window. The air seeping in from the window left it an unoccupied space which was just fine for her. âYou should steal some of the earmuffs that they use in herbology.â she teased. âWould drown it all out.â
Adelia snorted, trying to recall the earmuffs Safiye was talking about. âYou say that like iâve stepped foot in the greenhouses since my OWLs,â Adelia tolled her eyes, âPretty sure Sprout would have banned me if I tried to get into the NEWT class.â

âI know.â she groaned, the idea of having to death with the rest of the schoolâs taunting was mortifying. âI really though we had it in the bag this time.â she admitted with a sigh, so much for trusting her team. âI donât fucking know, apparently we are. I kicked Chrissy out of the team, by the way. I canât have her getting distracted by a boy, like seriously!âÂ
âWe should have!â Adelia said, tone bitter. âWeâve all been practicing so hard, most of us gave it our all during the game.â She shook her head, clearly agitated. âIf they canât keep it together during the games, then whatâs the point of them even coming to practice? We all put the hours in. We shouldnât have lost like that.â

A sigh escaped her lips. âIâll be more careful. Promise.â She murmured, chewing on her lower lip. âWell arenât we supposed to learn from our mistakes? Of course I wouldnât have left, Ade, I really lik- well- we were friends.â Juliet shook her head at her almost slip up. Now definitely wasnât the time to bring up old crushes sheâd repressed. âIt wouldnât have been your fault, you know that right?â Juliet took another step closer towards her, the two closer than theyâd be in years. âIt matters to me.â
Adelia couldnât help but feel a bit lighter, a weight lifted off her shoulders at the promise Juliet made. Whether it was completely realistic didnât matter-just the thought of Juliet being a bit more cautious was relieving. âGood, thatâs-thatâs good,â Adelia said, the smile she offered weak. Adelia couldnât look at Juliet as she spoke. âBut you needed to leave,â Adelia said, voice hard, âYou donât get it, Juliet. People I cared about were hurt, because of me. You can say it wouldnât have been all you want, but I could have been the end of you.â She shook her head, biting back the few tears that started to form. She worked hard not to think about this, what she missed out on with Juliet, the loss of her parents, for all intents and purposes. âAnd I just. I couldnât let that happen.â Now Juliet was in her space, close enough to touch without much effort and oh, how Adelia was tempted to reach out a hand. âIt shouldnât,â she said finally, eyes darting up to meet Julietâs. âI shouldnât.â

I donât⊠really think about that? Hmm⊠maybe Adelia for Hufflepuff? I guess Mollyâs not bad for Gryffindor. For having seen him shirtless before, think I have to say Otto for Ravenclaw. And SlytherinâŠwould it be weird if I said my friend Stefan? Of maybe I should say Niobe? Yes, yes, Iâll say Niobe.
