A sigh emits from the woman before she puts on a smile, trying her best to remain level headed. Such a curious child, wasn’t he? Always asking questions, always testing Serena’s patience. She supposes she should consider herself lucky to have a child so invested in the scripture and God’s word. ❛ It’s not who we sacrifice, it’s what. Magazines, coffee shops, processed food… We gave up such frivolous things from the world before to be welcomed back into God’s good graces. And look at how he has blessed us! You remember the Putnams, don’t you? They had a baby recently. Sweet, little Angela. She was worth the sacrifices we made, don’t you think? I’ll take you to meet her some day. ❜

He glares , eye averted somewhere else in the room , he wasn't about to stare daggers into the eyes of his 'mother'. It's just that he's heard all of this before . Out of the frying pan and into the fire .

There was a time a year back where hearing ' the Lord requires us to make sacrifices ' would have been taken very literally , now he just wonders how much has to be sacrificed for happiness.

❝ But who exactly do we sacrifice ? I tried that already . I'm not sure I can properly sacrifice someone . ❞ He knows that's not what that means , it just seemed more helpful somehow to diverge from all the sacrifices already made . He's already got the limp to show for it .

That was a pleasure that could never be taken away. "Necessary sacrifices...sure, you can call your freaky lil threesomes whatever you like I s'pose. That's not illegal." He laughed, amused by his own crassness. "Guess I've just never been that interested in saving anyone, let alone the world."

❛ I certainly think of Naomi-... Mrs. Putnam that way. She’s been such a wonderful friend to me here in Gilead. I find that we have plenty to talk about since she was blessed with sweet baby Angela. And to think that she wouldn’t have been within my life without the Sons of Jacob. ❜ Though, some days Naomi did get on her nerves. ❛ I try not to stray too far from the scripture. I do read other books, of course, but I always come back to the Bible. Blessed is His word, for it's what mankind should follow. I find I'm always at peace when reviewing God's word. ❜

She had a point, Vicki couldn't really argue it. "It's just kind of boring, isn't it--" she pauses before going further. Her words could easily be misconstrued as rude. "I just mean there are hundreds of way more interesting books. I'm sure...'God'", the name left a bad taste in her mouth, "would understand if you gave yourself some downtime."

❛ I did, yes. I liked having like minded individuals to talk to about the state of the world. Those who weren’t trapped in their academic bubbles and could see what was really happening. So often I would tour and be met with animosity, protests and people screaming at me. It was hard to believe that anyone couldn’t see what our country was becoming. I never had to worry about that with my fans, they weren’t blinded from the truth. ❜

Oh, he’s completely abhorrent! How she got stuck in conversation with someone like this was beyond her. ❛ I wanted to have a child with my husband, not just anyone. The world was dying, Gilead made necessary sacrifices to help restore some health and wellness. God looks favorably upon us and blessed so many with healthy children. It wasn’t “fanfare,” it was doing what we had to do in order to bring life into this world. ❜

"Uh, full offense, but you could have found a guy out here that would have gladly knocked you up without all the fanfare. Congrats and all that, but unless you're reading that Song of Songs thing I'm not sure the Bible would have really helped...I read it once, but that was enough."

That sounds like a good way to describe it. ❜ She nods along, listening to his word and taking them in. ❛ We never had to worry about having eyes on us until… ❜ The attacks on the capital, the riots and protests; everything that lead to Gilead’s creation. ❛ The reform began. I suppose I had some eyes on me from my book but never anything that made me feel exceptionally unsafe. Not until this one incident occurred after one of my speeches at this college. ❜

both circumstances were so easy to picture. on one side there was an image of serena in the before-world, a limitless credit card in hand, 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞, arm in arm with fred as they went about whatever business rich people did on a day to day basis. and then, the opposite, and what sounded to be far closer to the truth ; they, SHE, had been so normal. not out of reach, not above it all, just alive -- existing somewhere out there at the same time as he had. though doing so would have made no difference at all, bear still thought it a shame that he'd not gotten the chance to meet THAT version of her.

❛ Gilead has its flaws, yes, but it wasn’t all bad. It gave me a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby after years of infertility. I’m blessed to have lived there and seen birth rates rise. I’ve always enjoyed reading the Bible, even before living there. I can’t imagine that’s going away any time soon. ❜

"Shit, I always sorta thought they were exaggerating when I heard people say how bad things had gotten...but I mean, you were basically living that whole biblical life thing. I woulda thought you'd want to read...I dunno, anything else."
