Late Victorian British Fun (and not-so-fun) Facts
I thought others might be interested in my list of little things I've learned while researching the 1890s for my fics. This is by no means a list of things you should do when writing! Even I don't follow absolutely every single thing—I like to think wizarding society deviated quite a bit from muggle society, after all. If you wanna use this list as a reference, go ahead, but you should write whatever makes you happy. This is just for fun, and I'll probably end up writing down more stuff as I remember it—this is all just the stuff I could think of from the top of my head. :)
Basics
The Victorian Era was from 1837 to 1901. The era before was called the Regency Era (think Jane Austen) and the era after was the Edwardian Era (think Downton Abbey).
Love and Marriage
Even though the marriage age was lowered significantly in 1823, most girls still got married between ages 18 and 23.
The social season refers to the summer months from May to August in which the middle and upper classes left their country homes and stayed in London to attend social events, following the royal family. The main purpose was finding someone to marry.
Courtship, the part of a relationship that was most like dating today, only lasted a few months before progressing to being engaged. But it was common for engagement to last much longer. Dating as we know it today wasn't really a thing until after 1900.
Courtship "dates" that weren't in public often consisted of dinner at the woman's house with her parents (private time between the couple was sometimes afforded after dinners).
There was a paradigm shift in attitudes towards marriage; marrying for love became much more common in this era. But marriages were still pragmatic, too! Marriages based purely on love while ignoring the economic and practical aspects were scandalous.
Queen Victoria popularized white wedding dresses as we know them today.
It wasn't until the late Victorian Era that evening weddings became acceptable.
Snakes were a popular motif for engagement rings in the Victorian Era.
Pregnancy and Children
Victorian women were expected to hide all signs of their pregnancy, as it would imply participation in the act required for pregnancy (yeah, lol).
Husbands weren't allowed to be around for the actual act of childbirth, and it was advised he only stay around for 5 minutes afterward.
Anesthesia was first administered in the mid-1800s.
Fathers were often very involved in their children's lives, contrary to popular opinion.
Teenagers haven't changed much since the Victorian Era—our MCs weren't the only troublemakers. :)
Clothing, Personal Care and Fashion
Eyebrows came in all shapes and sizes; no one style appears to have been particularly coveted. The only exception was an aversion to unibrows.
Natural beauty was the name of the Victorian game. As such, makeup was very un-virtuous and was reserved for prostitutes and actors.
That doesn't mean people didn't use any products, however! Salves for the lips, as well as powders and rouges, started becoming popular towards the end of the era.
Perfumes and colognes were kept subtle, but floral scents were very popular amongst both men and women. Again, emphasizing the natural state of the body was seen as very virtuous.
Shapewear was just as popular back then as it is today. Adding or taking away layers of women's undergarments depended on the effect one wanted to have.
Men's undergarments were much simpler, usually consisting of cotton drawers and a long-sleeved undershirt.
Shorter skirts were appropriate for young girls, but as a girl got older, her skirts generally got longer.
School was still relatively uncommon for girls through the end of the era, but school uniforms for girls generally included aprons to protect their clothes.
Very long hair was desirable for Victorian women and was considered very feminine, but wearing that hair loose was not respectable. Bangs (fringes) weren't very popular.
The 1890s introduced the Gibson Girl look that would carry through the Edwardian Era.
Women wearing trousers was not as uncommon as one might think!
Bathing at least once a day was considered essential, but showering was not yet a thing.
Games, Leisure and Sports
Parlour games were very popular with adults at parties. Charades was an especially prevalent game.
Board games were also very popular for both children and adults.
Football (not American football!) became very popular in the Victorian Era amongst men. Croquet was the game of choice for women.
Cemeteries were popular picnicking spots and were more like sculpture gardens than grim reminders of death.
Food and Cooking
Honestly just go watch English Heritage's Victorian videos for an idea of the recipes and foods that were common back then lol. Mrs. Crocombe is a gem.
Breakfast was often a major event for wealthy Victorian Britons.
Ok that's all I can think of for now. I'm sure there's way more I'm missing. If I can come up with enough, I'll do another post at some point lol. Enjoy!

What would their Boggart turn into? How would they defeat it?
Tell me about your MC's family. Do they have parents? Siblings? Cousins? What's their relationship with them like?
On an average day, what can be found in your character’s pockets?
Has your character ever been attacked by a magical beast/animal? How were they affected (or unaffected)?
Is your character’s current socioeconomic status different than it was when they were growing up? (Also, what is that status? Well off and respected like the Malfoys, or perhaps less fortunate and looked down upon like the Weasleys?)
In what situation was your character the most afraid they’ve ever been?
In what situation was your character the most calm they’ve ever been?
What was your character’s favorite toy as a child?
How quick is your character to trust someone else?
How quick or slow is your character to resort to physical violence in a confrontation? (or magic, both are valid)
In the face of criticism, is your character defensive, self-deprecating, or willing to improve?
How does your character behave around people they like?
How does your character behave around people they dislike?
Is your character more likely to remove a problem/threat, or remove themselves from a problem/threat?
What does your MC see in the Mirror of Erised?
Does your character feel that they deserve to have what they want, whether it be material or abstract, or do they feel they must earn it first?
What would they smell in the Amortentia potion?
How easy or difficult is it for your character to say “I love you?” Can they say it without meaning it?
Which of the Deathly Hallows would they most like to own?
What does your character believe will happen to them after they die? Does this belief scare them?
What are their feelings on the Dark Arts?
Silly bonus question #1: Who does your MC fancy? 👀
Silly bonus question #2: Did you create your MC when Hogwarts Legacy came out, or did you always have them in your mind?

can't help but think that pensive scene with Sebastian and MC needed an aftermath 🤔
meaning as in
it needed that moment where Sebastian tries to convince them like “hey MC do that ancient magic thing on Anne” and MC would refuse like “no its like lobotomy hell no I'm not doing that” which leads into a heated argument
or idk gimme angst
#Clara is very cautious by nature#so Sebastian is 11/10 ready to have them fly back to Feldcroft and Clara is so very hesitant#b/c what Isadora did wasn’t natural and that magic was dark and angry and red like what Ranrok has#she’s got a bad feeling about what Isadora did even tho the results were good for her father#so Sebastian is PISSED that Clara won’t help Anne and Clara is trying to verbalize the horrible sinking feeling that memory gave her#he’s shouting at her and trying to get her to agree to help Anne b/c Clara might be his last hope#unless he can get that damned artifact thingy to work#but he promised Ominis and Clara that he’s stopped researching it#of course Clara not helping Anne with Ancient Magic means that the artifact is his last chance so Sebastian breaks that promise#anyway back to the memory scene#Clara is too polite and proper so Sebastian has never seen her lose her temper (yet… that will change later I wrote a scene)#Sebastian is yelling and swearing and goes to shove her angrily#Clara does a shield charm and he’s knocked back on his ass#and then he looks at her absolutely disgusted and leaves the Undercroft#it’s a horrible situation but there’s no good outcome#she’s loses her temper a couple months later post-Solomon when DADA faces boggarts#her boggart is her dead sister as an Inferi#Sebastian thinks she’s a hypocrite for refusing to help Anne while she has her own dead sister#Clara finally loses her patience and furiously tears him a new asshole Abington how he’s been cruel and a liar and manipulative#a terrible friend and he MURDERED his uncle#she says Anne deserves a better brother#and to use her ancient magic in Anne? she saw what happened to Isadora’s father#Clara says Sebastian always charges ahead with no thoughts for others which makes him a dangerous person to know#Clara doesn’t even consider him a friend anymore#she finally ends her tirade and wishes him a good day before stalking out of the undercroft#I haven’t figured out how they make up yet but they do

Clara and her favorite uniform
note: those stockings have been reparo’ed probably enough times that they’re about 85% magically held together, b/c Clara has a habit of sliding down hills instead of, ya know, climbing down like a civilized lady.

WIP ballgown (version 1) for Clara, its a sunset
I want to give her 3, b/c... why not. a sunset dress, a floral dress, and a velvet wintery dress
also since I pretend Professor Black decides dancing is a *fantastic* replacement for quidditch, there’s an end-of term ball (4th years and up). I havent decided if Clara wears the sunset dress, or a different one, but regardless. She and the other Ravenclaw girls essentially take over the ravenclaw tower bathroom to get ready (this is happening across all the house common rooms).
Sebastian, who did not get up the nerve to ask Clara if he could escort her, waiting with a group of gentlemen for the ladies to finally come down the stairs so the Great Hall can be opened and the ball can start. The 4th years are complaining about the dress robes. Why do they have to wait for the ladies? Ominis is has already pretended to hear them coming (once from Gryffindor tower, once from Sytherin), and a handful of the 6th and 7th years have tried shaping their patchy teenage stubble into some sort of facial hair style. Sebastian’s got a ridiculous amount of gunk to tame his hair back and to keep it from falling into his face, and he thinks Anne would get a kick out of this whole ordeal. Also, his mouth keeps going dry.
Professor Black stalks by, and says them all dressed up and looking Proper is... acceptable. They won’t be embarrassments to the ladies, and that's as much of a compliment as he will give. It still remains to be seen if they can dance.
At this point the girls start trickling towards the ballroom. Imelda’s in a dark gown, mutters something about ridiculous skirts and quidditch. Sebastian’s bowtie feels too tight.
Meanwhile, Clara, Astoria, and Samantha are trying very hard to not break out in giggles as they race down the ravenclaw tower. Samantha cant stop fussing with her hair b/c What if the ribbons fall out. Astoria has her notebook that she’s been using to rank their classmates as dancers (and then she can see who’s been practicing). the 7th years are a couple stairs back arguing over their NEWTs and whether or not so-and-so will be asked to dance by so-and-so. a 6th year has shoved her perfume bottle into her bodice.
They round the final corner and start going down the stairs towards the gentlmen. Clara finds that her hands are damp. She takes a deep breath and heads towards the ballroom.
Leander is staring at Samantha. Arthur Plummly has roses for the poor soul he asked to escort. There’s a 4th year boy being hexed by two girls b/c he asked them both and now they found out. Ominis is leaning against the far wall, tapping his foot impatiently (Clara briefly wonders if he asked to escort anyone- she doesnt think he did), and then she sees Sebastian looking incredibly ill at ease, adjusting his bowtie, and hair combed back and staying there. He glances up at her and does a double take before his face turns pink. Clara suddenly gets nervous (why is she now apprehensive about the ball? hadn’t she been excitedly racing her fellow ravenclaws down the stairs?)
Sebastian is having a horrible teenage cocktail of emotions parade through him right then, and all he can manage to think is- Joking. thoughts aren’t working for him at the moment. His mouth is ridiculously dry.  Somehow he realizes that he is most likely not the only one who would like to ask Clara if he could escort her 50ft down to the Great Hall, so he gives everyone in 5ft radius the stink eye and meets her at the bottom of the stairs. And offers her his hand (like a real gentleman, Professor Black would be so proud), and asks if he can escort her to the ball.
Clara accepts his hand, she’s got the jitters, and finds that his hair suits him all slicked back when he’s dressed up. Does she like it more than the usual messy flop? no. But right then, for the ball, its delightful. And he hasnt noticed that her hand is sweaty. Why is she worried about that?
They end up dancing together 3 times (scandalous for actual polite muggle society). Astoria notes that its very obvious he’s been practicing. The professors are pointing out that these two are oblivious to whats in front of them. Professor Weasley is trying to keep her nephew from spiking the punch. Ominis is being steered around the dance floor by Poppy while she gets into the specifics of mooncalf dances. Imelda only takes to the dance floor when its a faster dance, and only with fellow quidditch players. Otherwise she’s discussing Quidditch. Natty spins her mother around during a country dance, b/c her mother deserves a dance and she will make sure she has one. Leander has some 6th year’s flowers in his hair. there is a 4th year stuffing themselves silly with desserts. A sugar quill was left on Professor Black’s place setting.
And one of Clara’s hair flowers has found it’s way to Sebastian’s lapel.

The first time Sebastian takes Clara home to Feldcroft, he’s all excited b/c New Friend!!! Anne will have a new friend too! They walk the whole way there while Sebastian can’t shut up about how awesome Feldcroft is b/c it’s by the sea (Clara says she’s never been to the beach), Feldcroft has Halloween and Spring festivals, he bets the runner beans planted in the garden have probably taken over now, the neighbors had a new baby over the summer, etc… but it’s not as safe as it was but it’s still Feldcroft.
Clara grew up in New York and then London. So she finds the little hamlet charming and is tickled pink with everything. Anne is very nice and immediately teases Sebastian about losing a duel to Clara. And then begs for details about the troll attack. Solomon is still a dick. But he lightens up slightly as he noticed that Anne is more lively with both Sebastian and Clara visiting (even if Sebastian is still trying to find a cure that doesn’t exist). He’s grumpy b/c Clara is an extra mouth to feed and he doesn’t want to waste food on a visitor. He can also tell she comes from money and isn’t sure if she’s being nice to be nice, or if she’s patronizing (Clara is just being nice and legit finds everything like it’s out of a fairy tale)
There is a bedroom in the back of the Sallow cottage you can pry that headcanon out of my cold dead hands, and that’s where Solomon sleeps.
Sebastian and Clara stay long enough that they have to spend the night, so all 3 kids are in front of the fireplace late that night, Clara in a borrowed nightdress of Anne’s, the fire crackling to ward off the autumn chill, Anne curled up between Clara and Sebastian to keep a semblance of propriety (long before anyone has crushes on anyone else). They take turns tells ghost stories and Anne and Sebastian team up to scare Clara and succeed a little too well. Sebastian is the first to fall asleep. Anne and Clara have a whispered conversation and Anne says she doesn’t want Sebastian to keep getting his hopes up for a cure. She knows she’s dying and had to terms with it, she wants to enjoy what time she has left.
Next morning Solomon all but kicks them out of the house (stop eating all the food, Sebastian!) and Sebastian shows Clara the castle and they explore it as he tells her how Anne got cursed. And that he WILL find a cure. Clara doesn’t share the conversation she had with Anne, this isn’t the right time.
The walk back to Hogwarts in quieter, but Clara tries to lighten the mood with all the lovely things she saw about Feldcroft, the ivy-covered cottages, the massive pumpkin the size of a carriage in someone’s garden, etc… Sebastian now has his broom (forgot it when going to Hogwarts, and then Quidditch was canceled, but he’s got the feeling he will need it for Adventures), and it starts to rain.
They run the rest of the way back to Hogwarts, and arrive soaked, muddy, and laughing b/c they kept accidentally spraying each other with mud as they ran. Prof. Weasley catches sight of them running in the entrance hall and decides that she needs to keep a sharp eye on the two of them.
Clara regularly writes to Anne and sends her drawings of magical creatures they learn about. And embarrassing things Sebastian or Ominis did that week.

Clara’s first time in Potions is post-troll attack, and Hogsmeade is recovering so her new supplies haven’t arrived yet. Professor Sharp has set her up at the table directly in front of his desk, where he can keep an eye on students to need an eye kept on them. This is also where Gareth works for very obvious reasons.
She’s got her new potions book, that’s she’s read front-to-back twice, and borrowed a second-year’s potions book to try and catch up on stuff she should already know. There are scribbled notes of her’s in the margins of her book, detailing different ingredient preparations, and what the differences do in a potion. This is THE class she’s been looking forward to the most.
Sharp starts her off with an easy potion he teaches the third-years. Wiggenweld. Rest of the class is reviewing Doxycide to help Mr. Moon with a small infestation in the school broom storage cupboard.
Clara, who doesn’t want to fall behind, has 2 cauldrons set up across the table, it’s only her and Gareth so there’s plenty of room to spread out.
Sharp keeps a close eye on her b/c he thinks it’s foolish to attempt two potions at once, especially if you’ve never brewed one before. Also, Gareth is going to blow up his doxycide. He heated the bundimun acid before adding the streeler shells. Sharp doesn’t want the new girl getting caught in that.
Clara has a lot of questions, he’s happy to answer them so long are they aren’t stupid ones that can be easily answered with 5 minutes of looking through the textbook. Her first question is on the dragon liver for the doxycide. The book says to chop it, no information on size of the pieces, so is the liver juice more important, or is it exposing the surface area of the liver to the potion? Is it more beneficial to slowly have the liver dissolve in the potion, or should it be shocked with a large amount? She thinks slow, but that might make the steeler shells reaction to the hemlock less intense because the shells will have fully dissolved by then.
And then she switches gears to the wiggenweld potion and points out that the wolfsbane she has is dried, so it’s going to less potent (Gareth interjects to add more then), Clara snaps back that once it’s in the potion it’ll begin to rehydrate, so should she wait until it’s rehydrated to add the rest of the ingredients, or just add them while it’s not potent?
Sharp has not had a student so interested in potions in YEARS and she catches on quick. He’s hesitant to call her a natural, but she will probably be the best of the class at potions once she’s caught up. And she keeps Gareth from royally messing up his potions and even managed to save two or three. She’s interested in how the ingredients react, and when they study antidotes to poisons, she tries to create her own antidote. 5 rolls of parchment paper later, she’s barging into office hours b/c she thinks there’s a better general antidote than what’s in the textbook, she’s got a long list of ingredients, some are crossed out b/c they interact with others, or b/c they cancel each other out, and she’s Frustrated b/c in theory it should work except it just keeps brewing a mess in her cauldron. Sharp just hands her a bezoar. Easier. Faster. He knows it’s going to frustrate her more, but she’s 15 and will get over it. If she wants more in-depth knowledge, she’ll have to pass her OWLs.
Sebastian thinks Gareth sometimes messes up his potions on purpose to get Clara all riled up. He usually wanders over while his cauldron is brewing to see what Clara’s working on, b/c she likes trying to make her own potions (that do NOT explode or stink, thank you very much), and while he’s not a natural at potions, he like seeing how passionate she is about it.
Sharp also gets her a little side job with Pippin’s in Hogsmeade to deliver potions. He overheard her talking about wanting a broom, and he and Pippin meet once a week for a drink in Hogsmeade to discuss potions and the weekly Potions newspaper news. Clara has no idea Sharp had a hand in getting her the job. Pippin finds her experiments fascinating and lets her keep the old delivery broom that’s older than he is. She always comes back with the right change and in a timely manner. Occasionally he lets her keep a little extra profit or will tell her to grab a chocolate frog on her way out. Very few students take to potions and he’s glad he’s got an apprentice of sorts.

Clara never calls Sebastian “Seb” b/c she thinks one must be given permission to use a nickname, and only a handful of people ever call him Seb (Anne, Ominis, Imelda b/c they were on the quidditch team together, Poppy b/c she was Anne’s close friend). So she thinks they aren’t good enough friends for her to call him that, but then she doesn’t have a nickname, and maybe he didn’t come up with this one?
On the flip side, Sebastian is enthralled with her slight American accent and that she doesn’t pronounce the ‘t’ in his name, instead it’s “sebashian” and merlin’s beard, he likes the soft pronunciation. He doesn’t care about ‘Seb’ as a nickname, he’s obsessed with how she says his name.

For fan fiction/headcanon purposes:
What if Professor Black thinks dance classes are a suitable, and far more civilized and Proper, replacement for Quidditch? 4th years and up have a lesson every-other week. No uncouth violence, no chance of anyone getting sent to the Hospital Wing. And dancing is an important skill to know in case one is invited to a ball.
He thinks he’s genius.
The professors think the teenage romance drama is going to get significantly worse.
