The City of Bohan is the first novel by Irish writer Kevin Berry that has won him numerous European awards or at least nominations for them.

The novel is set in dystopian 2053 in a town on the west coast of Ireland. All this is only conditionally said because we will see nothing of the technologies of the future in the novel. In Berry's future, there are no computers and cell phones, digital cameras or the Internet, the heroes of novels write letters, listen to the radio, and use trains, trams or, most often, legs as transportation. Bohan itself is hardly a typical Irish town. Its residents listen to blues, jazz, calypso, not Irish patriotic songs. Bohan seems to be separated from the rest of Ireland by the bilge of the Great Desert that surrounds it. The author used as an inspiration for Bohan the Portuguese Porto he was on vacation when he came up with the idea to write a novel.
