Write Your Story
I just showed my 11-year-old son how many coffee shop AUs there are on AO3.
Why?
He sat down the other day to write a Minecraft story about three kids who go through a portal in their back yard and end up in the world of Minecraft where they have to battle all the big bosses (I didnā€™t even realize there WERE big bosses in Minecraft but thatā€™s beside the point). He wrote three chapters with a little input from me ā€“ his first beta ā€“ and y'all?
He was fucking excited. To be writing a story.
Today he came home from school and seemed a little down, so I asked him about it only to find out that some little asshole at his school told him, ā€œThere is already a Minecraft story.ā€
Me: Okay? So what?
Lucifer: If thereā€™s already a story, no one will read mine.
Immediately, I dragged him in and pulled up my AO3 account. My boys know I write fanfiction, so I showed him my account and how many subscribers I have. Then I showed him how many Teen Wolf stories there are. And then, because it seemed like the perfect analogy, I said, ā€œWhat if I wrote a story where two characters meet in a coffee shop and fall in love? No werewolves, nothing at all to do with the actual Teen Wolf universe. Just Stiles and Derek meet in a coffeeshop and fall in love.ā€
He laughed.
I showed him Mornings Arenā€™t For Everyone. Showed him how many hits it had, how many kudos, how many lovely comments.
Then I said, ā€œSo do you think, if anyone else wrote a story about those exact same characters meeting in a coffee shop and falling in loveā€¦ would anyone read it?ā€
He laughed and said, ā€œNo because you already did.ā€
So I clicked on the Sterek tag and refined to coffee shop AU. His mind was blown to see that they ALL had thousands of hits and kudos and comments. Then I clicked on JUST the coffee shop AU tag and showed him all the fics across all the fandoms written by countless different people.
Iā€™m going to tell you all now what I told him because it applies to everyone.
Write your story. It doesnā€™t matter that someone else has written a story about that subject. They didnā€™t write YOUR story. Only you can do that.
And I want to read your story.

We donā€™t talk enough about how fanfiction writers love to give character large amounts of non-specific paperwork they hate doing

May Writing Challenge
Tumblr media
This May I want to get back into writing. Iā€™m not at all consistent. Iā€™m at a point where I donā€™t feel like I can work on bigger things, because I canā€™t guarantee myself to keep working on it in a week from now. So I will take this month as a training month to get back into the habit of writing. I will do this by writing (or trying to write) 200 words every day. Topic is irrelevant. How great my writing is that day is irrelevant. Just 200 words written down. A habit taking 21 days to form was debunked, it does take a lot longer, but 31 days are a start I would say. These are already 140 words, so 200 words every day are hopefully manageable. You're more than welcome to join me if you like šŸ˜Š

Breaking news! Fic author starts writing a fic thinking it will be short and it turns out to be long! It is not the first time nor will it be the last!

About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning
If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:
Tumblr media
These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:
Tumblr media
But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.
Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.
If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.
Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.
Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.
Update: There's now a Megathread about this on the AO3 subreddit.

I will never understand media that portrays the classic Writer Problemā„¢ as being out of ideas. At any given moment I have at least six ideas for massively ambitious projects that will never happen because I simply do not have the time or energy to make them happen

everyone hate my loquacious swag. its always "why did you make this sentence so long" and "why do you use so many commas and em dashes" and never "how did you come up with run on sentence" or "writing that run on sentence looked fun"

do you ever find yourself bedeviled by writing ideas that are the equivalent of finding a single carrot in your fridge. your brain goes "we should write a pirate story" or "we should write a parisian thief caper" and you ask, "all right, what do we cook with that, then?" and it says "no other ingredients (:"

šŸŸ¢ You are still a writer even when you haven't written in a while.
šŸŸ¢ You are still a writer even when you feel like you aren't writing enough.
šŸŸ¢ You are still a writer when you feel like your work isn't good.
šŸŸ¢ You are still a writer when other people don't like your work.
šŸŸ¢ You are still a writer when you aren't published.
šŸŸ¢ You are still a writer when you only have works in progress.
šŸŸ¢ You are still a writer if all you write is fanfiction.

For all you writers out there, I wish you all joy in the process of writing this coming year.
And for everyone consistently struggling to find that joy in writing, I wish you the courage to experiment with new avenues of creative expression. Life's too short to pour energy into something that's not making you happy anymore, and writing will always be here if you want to return. šŸ’™šŸŒ»

Some of you would not survive waiting months to years for a WIP to update.
Look at me, listen to me: A couple of months is way too early to think a fic is abandoned or dead. A year is often too early. Internalize this.

"you sound smart" that's because i've spent years doing academic writing to the point that it's my default cadence plus or minus the use of profanity as a tone indicator
