OTP Hate

I am so tired of getting onto Tumblr and seeing the hate that pervades the Sherlock fandom. Seriously, Sherlock is my favourite show, but it puts an absolutely sour taste in my mouth every time that I see OTP hate. In my head, Sherlock is asexual, no matter who he gets with, if anyone, I doubt sex will be involved. That’s just my idea. He can get with John, I don’t care, he can get with  Molly, I don’t care, he can get with Jim, I don’t care. However, no ‘ship’ is going to be magically happy, John can be a real dick sometimes, Jim is not stable, Molly has been verbally abused (however, unintentionally sometimes) by Sherlock in the past. Not to mention that Sherlock is just grasping what friendship is, much less something much more complex. I get that people have their ships, I get that they are bonded to those and want them to happen so very badly, but to perpetuate hate in between the fandom because of a WANT is entirely silly. To say that Sherlolly fans only like them because it’s heteronormality it’s entirely stupid and generalising; they see something in the characters that others do not. To say that Johnlock fetishises the gay community is the same; they see something in the characters that others might not, simple as that. It’s a preference, not a war against a sexual orientation. I personally like Sherlock as just having friends, because, damn, how many stories do not focus around the fact that the main character is often of the age to ‘find love’? But, seriously, all I see anymore in the Sherlock tag is hate towards OTPs, whether you think Johnlock is ‘endgame’ or Sherlolly, or anything else. There are so many comments that separate the fandom to the point that we are willing to squabble with each other over who is going to kiss who. Are we really so petty? We are a stem of the Holmesians for Christ’s sake. Instead of enjoying the fact that we’re actually getting a new series and how terrifying the trailers are, we are focusing on the fact that we wants someone’s genitalia against someone else’s, focusing more on the fact our characters have transport more than the cases that the characters are about to show us. We can dream about our OTPs, show our support to them, but I am tired of seeing others put down and railed against because of something as stupid and banal as generalised assumptions to do with our ships.

Bitch stop being so anti-American. You evidently know nothing about what's really at stake for certain groups of people in the US. Talk about a victim complex.

All the Americans who will be hurt by a Trump presidency- non-white folks, LGBT+ folks, disabled folks, the poor, muslims and other non-Christians have my sympathy and I truly hope you’d all pull through. If you’re coming at this angle as a Trump supporter tho, then fuck off. 

But I’m gonna assume you’re not and, you know, just think for a moment. You’re here in my inbox telling me I have a victim complex. Think about that for a moment. 

Have you any idea how much US foreign policy affects us? Any damned idea at all? Your soldiers and your military bases are already in our countries. Your country has nuclear warheads. Your country has the biggest blue water navy in the world. Your country toppled and instated leaders at its own will for its own ends. Your economy is tied to all others- if you go down, so do we. And it looks like your next president will be an unhinged man who doesn’t even know anything about global affairs, who is easily baited and vindictive and takes everything personally? Who has laughed and treated nuclear proliferation so lightly? Who has said on TV he sees nothing wrong with having your soldiers commit war crimes- not that they haven’t in the past, but brazenly proclaiming it like this does seriously undermine the basic respect for international human rights law. Why does anybody else even have to try, if the police man of the world openly says fuck it? It may not be much, but just the very fact that these basic rights were at least recognised by nations, even if they didn’t always follow them, was crucial for people to have something to point to. We can’t even trust your next president not to engage in nuclear proliferation; he wants to hand out nukes like candy in Asia and I can tell you my family there is afraid this kind of talk will start an arms race and inflame nationalist sentiment and then aggression- and then all of us will be reliving 1941 again. 

Please don’t tell me not to be so anti-American, when we will feel the consequences of these election, but unlike you guys, we could not cast a vote in it. And I didn’t even say anything like haha fuck I hope the US burns to the ground. I was expressing my dismay with the results. I don’t want the US to burn to the ground because guess who will be the collateral damage when an empire collapses? 

And by the way, yes, actually a lot of us overseas know how the election will impact vulnerable groups of Americans. Because our media here has been providing extensive wall-to-wall coverage as though it were a local election. Because that’s how important American elections are to the world.

When your favorite writer starts writing fic for a fandom you hate

blue whales are the largest animal ever recorded, like you literally need to be in a helicopter to actually see one in from a perspective with zero distortion. idk i just feel pretty lucky to be alive on earth at the same time as them and they don’t even want to kill me. they just wanna use their toothbrush mouthes to filter the ocean of smol ocean bugs. they have communities and they sing to each other to communicate. work is slow im sorry happy friday whales r so cool

about ron keeping track of how much harry’s eating so on the days when harry can only manage to push food around his plate ron makes sure to ply him with tea all day and asks his mum to make one of harry’s favorites for supper

about charlie getting fed up with the reporters who mob harry everywhere he goes and grabbing a camera from a bloke who will not stop snapping pictures and chucking it in a fountain

percy fidgeting awkwardly, not quite able to meet harry’s eyes, and apologising for that letter he knows ron told him about

hermione making harry look her straight in the eye and telling him it’s okay not to be okay, and harry not knowing whether to be grateful or annoyed because he suspects that she’s actually been researching whatever the hell’s happening to him

ginny letting harry have his space but also knowing when to insert herself right into that space so he can’t shut down and push everyone away because she’ll be damned if he thinks she’s going to put up with that

luna finding him at one of the many parties he’s expected to attend and asking him ‘do you suppose you’d rather be here or stuck on the bottom of the hogwarts lake surrounded by extraordinarily aggressive plimpies?’ in such a solemn voice that harry can’t help but laugh

mcgonagall taking note of the circles under harry’s eyes when he stops by the school and suggesting a visit to the hospital wing before he leaves so madame pomfrey can give him something to help him sleep

hagrid inviting harry over for tea and just letting his boy sit outside in silence, fang’s head on his knee, as hagrid works in his vegetable garden

neville asking harry if it would maybe be okay if he comes along with him to see teddy some time so during the next visit they end up sitting on the floor in andromeda’s lounge on a cloudy afternoon, these three orphans, playing pretend with stuffed animals shaped like wolves and dogs and lions

kingsley kicking harry out of the ministry for the night because ‘for christ’s sake, harry, you’ve been here for twenty-two hours and molly’s owled me TWICE now GO HOME and get some rest or i will personally throw your “chosen” arse over my shoulder and toss you into the floo’

I honestly don’t understand why there aren’t more people who, when given the platform to discuss minimum wage, don’t simply distill it to the simplest of facts:

A forty hour work week is considered full time.

It’s considered as such because it takes up the amount of time we as a society have agreed should be considered the maximum work schedule required of an employee. (this, of course, does not always bear out practically, but just follow me here)

A person working the maximum amount of time required should earn enough for that labor to be able to survive. Phrased this way, I doubt even most conservatives could effectively argue against it, and out of the mouth of someone verbally deft enough to dance around the pathos-based jabs conservative pundits like to use to avoid actually debating, it could actually get opps thinking.

Therefore, if an employee is being paid less than [number of dollars needed for the post-tax total to pay for the basic necessities in a given area divided by forty] per hour, they are being ripped off and essentially having their labor, productivity, and profit generation value stolen by their employer.

Wages are a business expense, and if a company cannot afford to pay for its labor, it is by definition a failing business. A company stealing labor to stay afloat (without even touching those that do so simply to increase profit margins and/or management/executive pay/bonuses) is no more ethical than a failing construction company breaking into a lumber yard and stealing wood.

Our goal as a society should be to protect each other, especially those that most need protection, not to subsidize failing businesses whose owners could quite well subsidize them on their own.
