MY MOON †CHAPTER ONE (Remus Lupin x OC)
NOW PLAYING: For the First Time
prologue here
Mila; (Meel-ah), originating from the name Milagros, meaning 'miracle' Â
THE VERY FEW BANGS THAT SHE HADÂ bounced on her face as she trudged along to class, sticking to the sides of the halls to avoid bumping into people. Her hands were stuck onto the straps of her satchel, you could hear the faint noise of ink bottles clinking against each other, crumpled up pieces of parchment moving around. Her feet shuffled against the ground, trying to shove past the many students trying to get to their classes.
 Luna; Spanish for 'moon'
She got held up by what she could assume was either stupid boys laughing, a student getting picked on, or some poor person pulled into a humiliating situation.
Mila Luna was not one for socializing, apart from her friend group. She liked to keep to herself, spend her days in the far corner of the library studying or immersing herself with a new book she dug out from the depths of the shelves. She liked to think of herself as an extra in a film, a background, an unnamed character, just for show, to fill up space. That's what she liked, she was very happy with not getting attention. It kept things quiet.
She let out a puff of air, sticking her head a bit to see what was holding everything up, she couldn't see much though. The crowd picked up traction again. It was the first day of the second semester, winter break had just ended and most students seemed lazy and drowsy jumping back into the routine. Mila was more than elated to get back to Hogwarts, she wasn't that close with anyone that she could talk to over break. She much preferred to have too many things to worry about instead of feeling nothing and numb.
She entered her astronomy class, her favorite class might she add. She quickly walked to her usual seat, the second table to the back. The loud screeching of other stools perfectly drowned out the sound of her extremely loud one as she pulled it out. She sat down, setting her bag on the floor beside her. Although it was her favorite class, Mila couldn't help but doze off most of the time, she was tired from the absence of sleep from the night before. Multiple times she could feel her eyes shut, then she'd force them to snap open again, trying to focus.
"Because it is the start of the new term," Professor Sinistra started, "I've decided there will be no tests for the beginning of this new semester," the class erupted into quiet cheers, "Instead, I'm assigning a month-long project," she waved her wand towards the chalkboard, letters very slowly appearing on it, "It will be a group project between pairs of three. Two groups might have four as we don't have enough students," she walked towards her chart of different phases of the moon. "I want you all to find a way to execute the showings of the moon phases, whether this be a report, skit, presentation, or what not, I just want it done in a group of teamwork and collaboration!" Sinistra motioned back towards the chalkboard, "Here are the lists of groups and members, please gather yourselves."
Mila's head was nestled in her arms on the table, her leg underneath the table was shaking up and down. She hated group projects, well who didn't?
She would mostly have to do all the work, every time. Luckily, her astronomy class only consisted of them and the Hufflepuff's. Mostly all Hufflepuff's were not insufferable, she couldn't say so for her own house though. Mila's head sparked up as she read her name on the board:
  Group four;
Sirius Black
 Mila Luna
 Remus Lupin Â
Great just what she needed, paired up with relatively popular, annoying, pricks. She stood up from her seat with her satchel, making her way to Professor Sinistra's desk.Â
"Excuse me, Professor?" Mila said, while clearing her throat.Â
"Ah Mila, what can I do for you?"Â
Mila's hands tightened around the strap of her bag. "Could I switch groups? I'm not sure how well I'd do with my group!" she asked.
The Professor set down her quill and gave Mila a sympathetic smile, "I'm sorry, but the groups chosen, are the groups that are set in stone, Ms.Luna, this is a project to bring students together, as well as to see if you know your subject! I think this will be a nice challenge for you," Her teacher smiled sweetly. Mila pursed her lips, then turned on her heels towards the old rickety table with extra project information and instructions.Â
She waited by the table for a moment, trying to waste as much time as she could. She quickly skimmed over the piece of paper before reluctantly walking towards the loudest desk in the room. She pulled up a stool, from another desk, up to their table on the opposite side of them. The two of the boys were joking about something, not noticing her for a few seconds, at least that's what Mila thought. Remus had noticed the strange girl that sat down on the other side of them, her face was slightly hidden from her bangs, her robes and tie matched his, the red and gold hanging off of her neck.Â
He looked at her from the side, pretending to pay attention to Sirius. She pulled bottles of ink out of her satchel which was lying on her lap, she inspected them, then chose the one with the least amount of ink, to make sure not to put new ones to waste. She pulled out pieces of parchment, digging around her bag for a lost quill which she found alas. Remus had never seen this girl before, sure there were many people in the Gryffindor house, but he'd surely at least seen every face. Yet for some reason, she was a completely new person.Â
Sirius seemed to finally notice that someone had found their way to their desk. Sirius leaned over the table, slyly grinning at Mila as she kept her head down reading the instructions list. "And who might you be fair lady?" He questioned, Mila only gave him a quick glance in response. "Not a talker I see," he continued, "I am the one and only Sirius Black-"
"I know who you are," Mila cut him off to refrain from continuing his egotistical introduction.
"So you've heard of me?" Sirius smirked.
 "Yes. Unfortunately"
Remus stifled back a laugh at the short answers from the girl. "What's that supposed to mean?" Sirius sat back in his seat.
"It means, we have a project we have to do, so if we could please get started on ideas!"Â
The long-haired boy crossed his arms against his chest, "You never answered my question, now what's your name Ms. Mysterious?"Â
She sighed, setting her paper on the table, staring at Sirius, already tired of the long days ahead, "My name is Mila. Luna. Now if we could please-"Â
"Luna, that doesn't sound like a regular English name, what's it mean?"Â
"It's not. It means moon, now like I said-" Mila's jaw clenched in frustration, annoyed from getting cut off over and over again.
Sirius had elbowed Remus in the arm, Remus winced into the abrupt slight of pain, "Oi' Moony, Mysterious here stole your name!" Although Mila was annoyed from being cut off by stupid comments from the boy she quirked her eyebrow at the odd, out-of-place nickname.Â
"Pads, how 'bout we just start with the project," Remus finally spoke up, scrunching his nose.
"Project?" Sirius looked dumbfounded. Mila was definitely annoyed now, he couldn't even pay attention enough to know they had a project.Â
Remus had to explain to Sirius, "We have to find a way to creatively track the phases of the moon."Â
"Wait so how long do we have?" Remus bended over, getting his own supplies from his bag, leaving Mila to answer the question.
"We have this week to plan, the month of February, then the first week of March to correct and add whatever, now any ideas?"Â
"We could draw out the phases, Remus here is great at drawing thingies and stuff!" Sirius grinned. Once Sirius had registered what he'd just remarked too Mila saw as the two boys caught each others glaces.
Remus had just placed his quill on the wood surface before Sirius grasped his shoulder, hearing what he had just said, widening his eyes, "Sirius, first of all that sounded completely wrong, second I don't really draw, I'm not even that good-"
Sirius rolled his eyes, "Nonsense you draw like all the time- well except for when your face is shoved in some book."
"Actually, Black," Mila said, "That isn't such a bad idea, it could rack us up a few points, and if Lupin is as good as you say he is, I think we can pull it off quickly!" Sirius grinned, at least someone was fond of his ideas, then he smirked to Remus, letting him know he got his way. She dipped her quill into the ink, then pressed it on the parchment, writing the title of the project with the word 'draft' next to it, then listing the idea Sirius just gave.
After she finished she packaged everything back into her satchel, pulling out her book. "Why are you packing up so early?" Remus asked.
"Well the class is almost over, so..." Remus slightly nodded. Truth was Mila wanted to leave right when class was to be dismissed, and she wanted to finish her new book she found in the muggle section of the library, she only had a few chapters left, just yearning to be read.
Professor Sinistra finally let the class go as the hour rang for the periods of classes to end. Mila slung her satchel around her body, rushing out of the room, nose still nestled in the pages of her book as she headed off to Ancient Runes.
Mila felt like she could collapse at once, she dragged her feet across the floor to the great hall for lunch. She walked to the end of the Gryffindor table, only to find one of her friends, Ida. Ida Reese, or what Mila like to tease her with, 'Iddy', was the only friend she was close with. The only friend she really told about her past. The only one she could confide in, her best friend.
"Hey M'!" Ida greeted. Mila took her seat beside her, putting some salad on her plate, and covering it with ranch.
 "Hey Iddy!" Mila hummed.
"Today's a bust, anything fun happen to you?" Ida questioned.
Mila put a piece of spinach in her mouth, everyday seemed to be a boring day for Ida, "Not really, sorry to disappoint!"
Ida tilted her head, putting on a pleading look, "Really? There has to be at least, something!"
Mila smiled contemptively "I've finished my book if that's something that can fascinate you."
Iddy put her finger out tapping it on the open page laid in front of Mila, "What's this then?"Â
"J'some notes im writing in the margins," she shrugged.
Ida furrowed her eyebrows, her view resting on the Hogwarts Library stamp across the tops of the pages. "Isn't that like, not allowed? You know- to write in the books?"
M' had a muggle pen out and wrote a little sentence on the thin page. "Well loads do it, I already recognize two peoples handwriting, they write notes all the time as well!"
"Litte weird if you ask me M', but c'mon, finishing some muggle book cannot be the highlight of your day so far!" Mila felt pressed from the disbelief on her friends face.
She pondered, trying to come up with something relatively interesting. "I have a month and a half long group project in astronomy?"
Ida sighed, "That's better than the book,"Â
"Wait I didn't finish! Guess who I'm stuck with for the next six weeks?"
 "Who?"
She motioned her head towards the near center of the table, where four boys were joking around, flooding the area with noise. "Sirius Black and Remus Lupin," Mila stated.Â
Iddy held back a giggle, "Well, that could be fun! You'll get mounds of attention from that."Â
"Stop!" Mila scowled. "It was quite annoying, Black kept asking the most stupid of questions!"
"Well I think instead of his body giving him a brain, I think it put more time into that hair of his."
The two girls snickered as they looked over the group of boys, Sirius' hair just barely resting upon his shoulders. Mila had to admit, "Although I kind of hate them, Black has some seriously great hair, Iddy you should go ask him what conditioner he uses," she teased.
"I don't think his conditioner will help my hair, or yours!"
Remus; Latin orgins revealing determination of great admiriabilty
Remus continued to read his book as Peter and Sirius were throwing their food at each other, and James were staring over at Lily Evans, again. "I don't think you staring at her like some git is going to get her to go on a date with you, Prongs," Remus said, not looking away from his book. James's head turned to Remus, taken out of his day dreaming.Â
"She'll say yes, I know it, one day! You wait, and if she does, you owe me a galleon!" James practically pleaded.
Remus quirked his eyebrow, "A whole galleon? Just if she says yes to go on a date with you? You even have doubts in it yourself, mate," James scowled, going back to eating his food, Remus to his book, he read the little scribbled, but neat, notes left on the sides, he recognized this writing in every few books he was able to get around too.Â
Lupin; Meaning - 'Pertaining to Wolf'
His fate was sealed, engraved even into his last name. The scars that aligned his face, the bite carved into the back of his neck, that carried the burden since he was four. The way people pitied him so much, they were willing to become illegal animagi to assist him on the treacherous nights of the full moon.Â
Even if it seemed like such a small problem, the weight was on his shoulders forever, to numb it, he would read, pull pranks, take midnight strolls, draw, but, it wasn't like he could do it all, all day, he wish he could, but the problem still lingered above him, swaying back and forth. He would do as many things as he could to take his mind off of the 'monster' he was. Take up extra credit school work, harder classes, prefect duties. Anything to rid the creature from his mind.
He kept wondering how he would complete the last day of tracking the moon for the new project he assigned, Sirius had committed him to it against his will, knowing that Sirius didn't think about the once a month night. Remus had been staring at the same word in his book for a few seconds before snapping out of his thoughts, beginning to talk to Padfoot who was next to him, "Sirius, you're going to have to actually do work for this project!"Â
Sirius turned to him, face full of bread, "I will- fon't worry!" he finished chewing and then swallowed.
 "I'm serious!"
"No I am!" Remus rolled his eyes, he walked himself into the joke again. Â
"Fine, I will try, but sometimes I just have way more important things to do, Moony, besides you have that girl to help you anyways!"
Remus sighed, "Her names Mila, treat her with respect, set an example for James please, then maybe he'll learn how to actually treat a girl!" James turned his head asking "What?" after hearing his name, but they ignored him and Remus continued talking,Â
"I say we meet up in the library tomorrow, say about five p.m. to give us enough time to do other work, and plan out things, understand?"Â
"got ya- now can I finish eating my rolls?"Â
"Fine."
Lunch had ended, students made their ways to their last 3 classes to end the day. Remus had waited for the Great Hall to clear out, in hopes of finding his another project partner to notify her of the Wednesday study plans. He looked down the tables until his eyes fell upon a girl getting up from the benches carefully as she was still holding onto a book jotting something down.
He walked over to her, "Hey!" he said, Mila froze, almost jumping back as she looked up to meet Remus's gaze.
"Oh hello- You startled me," She tensed.
He ran his fingers through his hair, pushing it back, hopefully making it look more presentable, "I'm sorry, didn't mean to," Mila quirked her eyebrow wondering what the brunette was doing, "I just wanted to let you know me and Padfo- Sirius, decided to meet up tomorrow in the library tomorrow, five p.m. to study for the project," He smiled at her, but she just nodded her head in response.
"Ok, I'll be there, I just need to get to potions, bye Lupin," He watched her walk off to Professor Slughorn's classroom as he went off to his.
Mila woke up tiredly, not ready for the usual Monday and Wednesdays of an extra class, hers being Ancient Runes, which she hated, but was needed for her future aspirations.
She was able to escape an encounter with the Marauders in astronomy, as there was no time to be left to get groups together. Ancient Runes, was depised by Mila, it went painfully slow that day. Professor Babbling did what her name ensued, babbled on about useless things, her squeaky voice playing rough on Mila's ears. The class was finally dismissed, much to her delight.Â
Mila was starving and dying of hunger, she almost ran to the Great Hall for lunch. She adjusted her Gryffindor tie that sat on her neck, her satchel swinging beside her body. As she entered the Great Hall she scanned the tables, she found that her other 3 friends that made up her friend group, finally decided to sit with her and Ida. She smiled and started walking towards them. Much to her demise on her way she could hear someone calling out to her from down along the table. "Oi! Ms. Mysterious, get over here!" it was none other than Sirius Black. She sped up her pace, completely ignoring him, hoping she could rush past him so she could eat.
Unfortunately her gripped the sleeve of her robe, pulling her back, she could already feel a few of girls eyes staring at her. She hung her head down, keeping her face hidden with some of her hair. She turned to him, "What?"
"I just needed to tell you something about todays study thing for astronomy!"Â
She let out a puff up air, "Go on, make it quick, I don't want to be seen around you all!" Instead of getting to the point he went off topic.
"Why don't you want to be seen with us?" He questioned.
"Cause I can feel everyone looking at me already," She muttered back.
"I thought you were a Gryffindor? Things aren't supposed to bother us," he tsked smirking.
Mila scoffed, "Way to be stereotypical Black, not everyone wants people drooling all over them all day! Or shooting daggers at you with their eyes for just speaking to you!"Â
Sirius was taken aback, "I have you know, I do not have every girl drooling all over me, there's you for starts-"
"That's because you're not all that!" She sang. Peter across from the table, who was listening in on the conversation, stifled a small giggle.Â
"Are you calling me a terrible person?"
"Yes!" she leaned over, in-between Sirius and Remus, grabbing a warm biscuit from the center of the table that they had hoarded. Remus was surprised at the sudden body right next to him reaching for a snack.Â
"I'll have you know I'm not stupid! I'm way smarter than Prongs! If anything I'm right next to Remus when it comes to my intelligence!" He declared, Mila ignored him again, biting into the baked dough, coming to delight with the warmth in her mouth, letting out a 'Mm!' and reached for another one, storing it in her pocket.Â
"You've talked longer than you've should, I'll be going now." she strode off to her friends, taking another bite out of the biscuit, not caring about the eyes on her, the dough was too good to be eaten behind her hair.
She went towards the end of the benches, closest to the Professors tables. She sat next to Ida, on the other side of them were 3 girls, The one in the middle was very pretty, her cookie blonde hair was silky, her face was slim, she was the definition of what pretty was. Her name was Serenity Coleman. Mila had been friends with her from a young age, their families were close, not so much them anymore. They were just to different, yet they were still friends. She had just drifted off to find new people, who were much cooler then Mila, Mila was decidely her uncool friend.
Serenity was too cool for a nickname as well. From when Mila met her to the end of 3rd year, Serenity had always went as Seri, but by fourth year, that was too much of a kid-ish name. Serenity was better at everything, exceeded in areas that M' lacked. Serenity had latched on to new friends, who were obligated to be Mila's friend, and the two sat on either side of Serenity right now.
On Serenity's right was a girl with dark brown hair, her face always had a mean look on it, this was Ruby Ross. Often had the girl catergorized herself as too cool for school, she often convinced the other two of their trio to skip classes, go off flirting with guys, or playing around in their dorms. She took things with a more careless attitude, she didn't pry for anything, which Mila appreciated. Mila, Ruby, Serenity, and Iddy all shared a dorm together, which is how they found out about Ida in the first place.
The girl on the other side of Serenity was Maisie Baker, everyone called her Mai, she had the same dark brown eyes and hair as Ruby, but had more rounded features. You instantly felt a safe aura from her, she was always kind and cheery. She was very kind to Mila, always checking up on everyone.Â
"Since when did you, talk to them?" Serenity perked up.
"I was just talking to him about an astronomy project I have to do with two of them. No need to get jealous they're quite insufferable," Mila defended, scared of playing another game of charades.
Serenity scoffed, drooping her head down to Mila with a look of disbelief, "Are you kidding? You know how lucky you are? How many people would kill to be grouped with them! Sirius is such a catch!" Mila only looked back to her with a very much concerned face as she continued, "M', could you maybe, introduce me to Black? Since you know him now, could get me a chance this time."Â
"Serenity, you know how many girls he's tried to be with? If he did say yes for a date, pretty sure he would forget you by next week!"
"I'd say you have a crush on black, M', and that's why you won't introduce Serenity to him!" Ruby said, obviously joking.Â
Mila looked slightly shocked, "Excuse me?" she said.
"Fine then you have a thing for... Potter!" Ruby grinned.Â
"Well even if she did, she had a 0% chance, he's all over Lily Evans!" Mai pointed her finger to James, "I mean just look at him pining all over her!" All of the girls heads turned to James, then following his gaze to a redheaded girl giggling with her friends, not noticed the brown eyes looking at her with much, much, desire.
"Poor James" Serenity did a small frown, "She doesn't see anything in him, I hear she has to reject him at least like once a week!" The girls went on to talk about another topic, but Mila kept looking at Lily, wishing she was her.Â
Lily was popular, pretty, had a guy chasing after her for years, she was smart, all her teachers loved her, she was outgoing, many friends, kind, and sweet. Mila had only talked to her a few times, and every encounter, Lily was so nice to her, effortlessly doing everything right. Mila aspired to be like her. To have her beautiful pale skin, instead of her darker one, to have to straight hair, instead of her frizzy hair. Mila always put her standards too high.
She went back to her friend's conversation, trying to pick up on what they were talking about. She sat there, pretending to laugh with them, she was lost in her own thoughts, as she slowly ate, and nodded at the every few asked questions.
"So M', are you going to tell us about your new crushes on Potter and Black!" Ruby teased, Mila rolled her eyes in response, finishing to swallow down the bite of her sandwich.
"You guys are unbelievable!"Â

You and Remus donât speak about the bed sharing accident till mid summer, when you and Marlene invite him and his friends to your annual cookout.
Youâd asked months in advance to use your family cottage in the countryside for your party and despite every jab and snide remark your family had made in the months leading up to the event, you refused to retaliate and make them change their minds about loaning you the house.
âMake sure you tell everyone to bring swimsuits, Marl, the lake is gorgeous.â
Youâd gone up to the house a day before everyone else, wanting to ensure that everything was clean and that youâd have enough room for everyone to have at most two people in a room.
âLupin, looks like youâre gonna have to bring those swimmies anyway!â you hear her yell to Remus whoâs currently under packing by the sounds of it.
âTell him he has to! Everyone has to go swimming âcause thereâs a boat that takes you to the best part of the lake.â You say down the phone as you slide the last case of sodas into the fridge.
âI can hear you just fine, pretty girl. Iâm not doing anything mad with you lot, you and Marlene are chaotic enough when youâre together.â
Marlene snickers and wishes you goodbye before you can even try to defend your mentality when you and Marlene meet in one room.
As the day drones on, you organise the firewood in a pile near the pit, thin blankets on the sofa as well as the beds, and you even make a couple burritos for breakfast in the morning.
As you go about your skincare, your phone rings and your body tenses. With one hand on your face, you take a peek at your phone and let out a breathy sigh at âMoonyâ flashing on the screen with a video call.
âYouâre there by yourself?â he asks as soon as you answer, taking a little time to prop your phone up on the sink as you rub your serum into your face.
âMhm, Iâm a big girl Remus, âve locked the doors already and everything.â He knows youâre teasing him, and though youâve got a playful smile, he frowns. Heâs not a major fan of you being there by yourself.
âI know you are, sâjust far.â you let out a giggle as you take a look at his worried face.
âPromise Iâm safe Rem. The house has an alarm.â you placate him anyway, and take him through the virtual motions of your nighttime skincare routine.
âDo you want me to come there earlier?â he asks as you put everything back into your makeup bag.
âRemus,â you laugh and watch as he smiles. âYouâre bringing Sirius, James, Lily, and Marlene. You canât come up earlier.â
Remus scoffs and shows the floor where Sirius and Marlene are sleeping.
âJames and Lils are down the hall, I can make them get up earlier to be there at like eight.â
You shake your head. The way your heart warms at his worry for you and his insistence that he wants to be there earlier is instantaneous and unstoppable.
âYouâre going to make me think youâre obsessed with me.â
Remus gives you a small smile, one youâve learnt is actually a big smile in Remusâ books- but says nothing.
âDo you want me to bring brownies or cookies? âVe got both, but Iâm pretty sure Sirius and James have had from the brownies.â
He rolls his neck and then his shoulder as he waits for your response and you watch a small frown play on his lips.
You slide on your glasses and hum, âMaybe cookies, especially if theyâre oatmeal raisin.â
Remus nods, a little bewitched as he watches you putting on a lip mask. He saw you in your glasses a couple days after Marleneâs party, when he dropped off your shoes and took back his sweater, even after insisting you keep it.
He couldnât help but think that you were even more gorgeous with the wide framed glasses than you are with your contacts then, and now he thinks the exact same thing- especially with your bunny pyjamas.
âIâll keep that in mind, pretty girl.â Remus watches you crawl under your sheets and tries not to look creepy, but itâs intimate and he feels like youâre both a couple, rather than a couple of friends.
âGânight Rem,â you yawn, face tucked into something Remus canât quite make out in the dark room.
âGânight pretty girl,â Remus waits till youâre asleep to hang up and when he does, his head falls into his pillow with a sigh.
-
The next morning, youâre reheating your burritos on a comal when Marlene texts you that theyâre thirty minutes away and starving.
You laugh at the picture she sends you of James and Lily occupying most of the space in the backseat asleep while sheâs squished to the door.
By the time youâre opening all the doors, and going out to water some of your plants, you see Remusâ car pulling up the driveway.
Youâre still in your pyjamas, bunnies covering your pants and tank top and your glasses are still on but you canât really find it in you to care.
âBubbles! Are you putting on a show for me?â Marlene screeches as she practically jumps out of the car and pulls you into a bone crushing hug.
âOh yeah, are you aroused?â you laugh as you set down the watering can.
âMhm, extremely.â
Remus joins you after and you give him a small smile as his hand reaches to brush your lower back.
âGâmorning,â he whispers, voice raspy like heâs just smoked. âCute pyjamas.â
You bite the inside of your cheek to keep from smiling.
âAngel, this is a pretty sweet place!â Sirius gives you a side hug and drops a kiss to your forehead.
âThanks Sirius,â
You greet James and Lily who seem upset theyâre awake so early but they manage to give you a smile. âThereâs breakfast on the counter.â Everyone besides Remus rushes into the house.
âBabe youâre the best!â you hear Marlene shout and you smile.
âYouâre not hungry, Lupin?â
He shakes his head, âNot till youâre going to have something.â
You feel your heart gallop at the ease with which he says the words and you try hard to keep those feelings from rising up to your face.
âFine, but thereâs lots of flowers to water.â it takes you all of ten minutes and you make it back in the house in time to get the last burrito.
âWe can share,â you say to Remus whoâs halfway to protesting when Marlene kicks his shin.
Youâre cutting the burrito in half when she mouths, âShare with her.â
âWhatever you want, pretty girl.â he says instead of, âNo, yâcan have it,â like heâd wanted to. Your bright smile as he accepts it makes eating at eight in the morning not seem like a strange thing. Especially when you opt for sitting next to him at the breakfast nook.
Your thigh presses into his, elbows brushing every time you shift. Itâs weird in the way that it comforts you- youâve known him for less than a month and youâve slept in the same bed and become intertwined in each otherâs routines, and when heâs this close youâre just a regular girl, with no issues at home.
Marlene leaves first and before you can ask her she says, âIâm gonna set the kettle on,â
You give her a smile and blow a kiss that makes Sirius pout.
Remus barely conceals his smirk at his best friendâs obvious attraction to Marlene.
âDid you bring your mug?â she asks and Remus turns away from Sirius to look towards the kitchen.
âI did, sâin the cupboard.â
He turns to you and raises an eyebrow.
âWhat mug?â
You set your half eaten burrito down and jerk your chin to where Marlene is holding the mug that resembles a dinosaur.
âItâs not good by any means, but I love him.â
Marlene runs to her bag to pull out another dinosaur mug that leaves Sirius pouting even harder.
âWhere was I when this mug making trip was taken, hm?â he asks, James and Remus roll their eyes and you swear they mutter, âBrat,â but donât say anything.
Marlene responds to him, âProbably riding your motorcycle to the hairdressers? You werenât hanging out with us Siri- itâs a me and Bubbles thing.â
Marlene blows you a kiss this time that Sirius reaches across the table to âsnatchâ before it reaches you.
âYouâre a lot more jealous than I thought youâd be,â you say gently to Sirius who flushes a little pink.
âMânot.â but his voice goes up an octave as he says it.
âThereâs more mugs in the cupboards over the stove if anyone else wants tea.â you say, turning to Lily whoâs just a little bit quiet.
âYou can go upstairs and take a nap if you need to,â she gives you a gentle smile and yawns before she can say thank you.
When Marlene comes round with your tea, James and Lily are heading upstairs to get a bit more hours in and Sirius is taking Marlene back outside under the guise of, âgetting a feel for the landâ but youâre pretty sure he just wants to love on her.
Again youâre left with Remus and you donât mind it one bit.
âWhenâs the next mug making trip?â he asks as you take a sip of tea and relax against him.
âOh donât tell me youâre jealous too, Lupin.â
He only shakes his head, âOf Marls? No, I just want to have a mug with that much,â he pauses as he searches for the right word while he looks at your very deformed bright purple dinosaur with green spots. âcharacter.â is what he settles on.
âThatâs an interesting word choice,â you take another sip. âMaybe when we get back to the city.â
Remusâll take that any day.
âWhatâs the first order of business?â he asks and you turn to him,
âGrocery run, I didnât know what everyone ate or didnât eat so I didnât want to get anything more than stuff for breakfast.â
Remus nods, his hand falling to your hips to pull you a little closer. His thumb rubs the exposed skin there from where your shirt has rode up as you finish your tea.
âWe can go and come back, pretty sure James is snoring and Sirius,â he pauses and you laugh. âSirius is distracted.â
âIâve gotta shower first though.â Remus doesnât seem to mind the implied wait.
âSo Iâll watch a film,â itâs how sincere he sounds when he says things like that that causes your heart rate to pick up. âSeriously, pretty girl. Go shower, do your hair, whatever you want to. Iâll wait.â
-
Remus only has to wait a half hour before you come back down to the living room and he thinks youâre as beautiful as ever when he sees you.
Youâre in a pair of white washed overalls and a cute top underneath that has flowers embroidered on the sleeves and your hair is down.
âMâready,â you say as you shove your feet into a pair of sneakers and Remus stands.
âI took everyoneâs snack orders and I think Sirius and Marlene are gonna be sunburnt by the time we get back.â
Youâre confused as to what he means till you walk outside and spot them sleeping on the porchâs swing set.
âMaybe the sun will have pity on them.â You doubt it will.
Remus insists on letting you sit in the trolley as you shop, âSomeone has to sit, usually itâs Sirius,â he explains as he helps you into the trolley, âbut someone has to.â
Ten minutes into being carted around, you come to realise you love it.
Youâre sitting in the basket, grabbing bags of crisps, chocolates and two sacks of flour that make Remus raise his eyebrow.
âIâm making dinner,â you say and Remus shakes his head.
âThis is supposed to be a vacation; for everyone.â Thereâs a hidden meaning behind that but you choose not to dwell on Remusâ kind words.
âBut I was gonna make a steak and ale pie,â you say as you reach for a tin of vanilla sugar. âAnd vanilla buns for dessert.â
âThatâs all, pretty girl. I want you to relax too, you donât have to cook for us all weekend.â
âBut I like doing it,â you try to argue but Remus stands firm.
âTonight only, Iâll make breakfast tomorrow.â
âWhat about dinner tomorrow night?â you ask with a mischievous glint in your eyes and Remus scoffs but it sounds more like a chuckle.
âWeâll figure that out then,â he puts an extra crate of eggs beside you and sneaks a small tub of vanilla extract too.
Remus pays before you can swipe your card and levels you with a look that says, âtoo slow,â but it also makes your belly swim with something else.
All your friends always leave you to pick up the tab when you go out and while you donât mind, you canât remember the last time someone even offered to pay for a meal for you - even on a date.
By the time dinnerâs ready, youâre all a little buzzed on beer and have all âsampledâ a bun before dinner.
Dinner with your new friends is different to how it is at home. Everyone talks, shares odd stories and makes jokes. Thereâs no tense silence, no awkward questions to try to lead into conversation- just genuine conversation that makes your heart swell a little.
âMovie night?â Marls asks as Remus and James wash the dishes- they both insisted after you cooked.
âWhat do you usually watch?â Lily asks and Marlene smiles. Sheâs the one that came up with this movie rotation all those years ago.
âHorror, comedy and then animation,â she says excitedly, âWe havenât made it to animation in years though, someone falls asleep halfway through the comedy.â She looks pointedly at you and Sirius and Lilyâs eyes follow.
âShe always chooses âThe Hangover.â We've seen it too many times now.â
âWell, we canât have that. Lily you choose the comedy this time,â Sirius says and you nod pointing to the tv.
âThereâs some stuff on dvd there and I think weâve got the streaming set up already.â
You leave for another shower while they decide, changing into your pyjamas and slipping into your bunny bedroom slippers.
âWhat did you guys choose?â you ask as you sit beside a freshly showered Remus- his hair is damp and he smells like oranges.
âInsidious, Grown ups and Monsters Inc.â James says, sliding the first dvd in while Marlene comes back in with three bowls of popcorn.
âMonsters Inc?â you murmur, hands wringing in your lap as Remus accepts the bowl. Heâs sporting a frown as your hands seem to be wrung to all hell.
âYeah, havenât seen it in years.â Marls says and you nod, plastering a smile on your face as you take a couple kernels of popcorn.
âYou okay?â Remus whispers and you nod, stuffing your mouth so you donât say anything out of turn.
All through the horror, he can tell youâre on edge from more than just fear. It gets worse when everyone is wide awake during the comedy.
âIâm gonna put the kettle on, anyone want anything?â You ask, twisting the joints of your fingers to crack them.
Marlene looks at you funny, leans her head off the sofa and mouths, âYou okay?â To which you nod.
She frowns but you only glare back and she drops it.
Thereâs a chorus of requests that you mutter to yourself all the while to the kitchen- James wants another bun, Lily a cup of tea, Sirius wants his gummy bears, Marls wants Swedish fish and Remus wants nothing so youâre bringing him a cup of tea as well.
Youâre not alone for three minutes before Remus joins you.
He looks tired, like the dayâs drive has worn him down, but he grants you a smile anyhow.
âCame to help you,â you doubt thatâs the only reason heâs in the kitchen- youâre not good at keeping your emotions off your face it seems.
âYouâre missing the movie,â you point out just as the kettle whistles.
Remus shrugs and takes to pouring water over the tea bag in your cup and two others. âSugar?â He asks, looking up at you to find you sitting on the counter, swinging your legs as you dip your hand in the bag of Swedish fish.
âTwo please,â but your voice is anything but regular.
âIâll be two minutes,â Remus promises as he takes everything back to the living room.
Youâre alone with your thoughts for a little, reminiscing on when you were a kid and you used to come here with your parents.
Youâre so deep in thought you donât notice Remus is back till heâs standing right between your legs.
âWhatâs eating you?â He asks softly, hands on the counter right beside your thighs.
You shrug, not sure how much is the right amount to share.
Thereâs not much in terms of âloyaltyâ between you and your family, but it feels wrong to speak ill of them because sometimes theyâre not bad- sometimes theyâre the best people ever, and then they ruin it by being mean for months.
âPretty girl,â Remusâ tone is still patient, still soothing and you make up your mind quickly.
âCan I tell you after the movies? Iâll show you the lake too.â
Remus studies you for a moment, hazel eyes scanning your face intensely before he relents.
âOnly if youâll wear a sweater,â
By the time Monsters Inc is on, youâre clenching your fists under your butt and forcing yourself to at least look like youâre paying attention.
âI havenât seen this in forever!â Marlene says excitedly, and you smile, a fake one but itâs soft enough that she doesnât question it.
âNeither have I,â you say back, Lily making comments of it being her childhood favourite falls on deaf, buzzing ears as Boo attaches herself to Sully.
Your mood only gets worse and about three quarters way through, Remus canât bear to see your mixed emotions any longer and guides your head to his chest.
âJust pretend youâre asleep, dove.â He whispers and you close your eyes. If he feels tears wetting his shirt when Mr. Waternews is found out and Sully and Mike realise who theyâre working for, Remus doesnât say a word.
He doesnât say anything when the tears become worse when Sully and Mike remake Booâs door and say goodbye to her; he just wipes them away as discreetly as he can.
Your friends file off to bed shortly after the movie ends and a quick clean up, but youâre not so lucky. Youâd promised Remus a talk and a tour, and honestly, you need it.
âCâmon,â you gesture for Remus to follow you after he gives you his sweater, and you slip into your shoes.
âHere,â he hands you a fresh cup of tea as he opens the door for you.
Remus embraces the silence of the first few steps and waits you out until you sigh.
âWe used to come here, for the summer back when it was just me, my mum and my dad,â the words hang there, only the wind touches it as you consider what else you should say.
âIt used to be fun, weâd go out on the boat, and have a bonfire and go out on the lake- itâs where this whole tradition started actually,â
You hazard a glance at Remus and find him looking at you carefully.
âI havenât watched Monsters Inc, since the last time we came here.â
Remus sighs, âHow old were you then?â
You take a sip of your tea, âI think six? Maybe seven,â he blows a breath. âIâve tried watching it on my own after, but it was always me and my dadâs show. It was our thing, I was Boo, he was Sully- but then, I donât know what happened if Iâm honest.â
Your eyes shine with tears in the moonlight as you lead Remus to the dock.
You sit and pull your knees up to your chest, the hem of Remusâs sweater covering your shins as you lay your cheek on your knees.
âWe used to be really close and now I think he wishes heâd never had kids. Especially if we try doing or saying things he doesnât agree with.â
Remus tugs you close to his side when the first tear falls, his hand on your shoulder as he squeezes you close.
âFrom what little Iâve seen, he seems⊠intense.â Is the word Remus goes for, and you can tell itâs to be polite.
You nod, âYou canât put a hair out of place with him- itâs practically a cardinal rule to always be perfect.â
Remus sighs, âThatâs an unattainable goal, perfection.â
You shrug as you rough up your cheeks to rid them of tears. âI donât think he really cares, and then sometimes,â you pause, not sure if you should or even can get the words out to tell Remus.
âYou donât have to say more, pretty girl. I get what you mean to say.â
Remus doesnât ask anything else or anything of you and itâs refreshing to get to put down all the pretending and the chipper, and the unwavering happiness and just be.
âHeâs just a lot and itâs hard to know which version of him youâre gonna get.â
Remus rubs your shoulder and your arm, âIâm sorry, dove.â
You stay out till your tea goes cold and youâre yawning so much Remus is laughing softly every time.
âCâmon, letâs get you to bed, precious girl.â Your belly swims at the nickname, only Remus seems to shower you in them- outside of Marls.
âWill you stay with me again? You donât have to, thereâs a room for everyone if youâd prefer to sleep on your own.â
Remus wouldâve said yes even if you didnât look so shy and sleepy and if you didnât wear his sweater like it was something commonplace- though he figured if you wore it once more, that it would be a habit he would be insanely fond of.
âIâll stay with you, lead the way.â
-
You wake up in a tangle of limbs and your face tucked neatly away in Remusâ neck. He somehow smells better now, a mix of your laundry detergent, his orange soap and sleep.
Heâs also warm in a way that makes you cosy up even closer to him.
âStop moving, pretty girl,â Remusâ voice is gravelly and raspy, his arms lock around you a little tighter as he holds you still.
âSorry,â you murmur, a yawn ripping apart the apology. âDid you sleep okay? I didnât move too much?â
Remus shakes his head and stretches, his limbs cracking as he does so.
âSlept great. You were still as anything,â he finally opens his eyes, the usually hazel eyes seem more honeyed and warm in the morning light. âCome closer, youâre warm.â He says and you chuckle.
âI usually get told I run cold,â Remus shakes his head and tugs you closer by your waist.
âYouâre toasty,â you both just lay in silence as you allow yourselves to wake up slowly.
You hear noises around the house as everyone else wakes up and you sigh.
âTime to get a move on, Remmy.â
He groans, âCanât they entertain themselves?â
You laugh, âThey could, but Iâm hungry.â
Remus gets out of bed with no complaints and gets ready for the day before heading downstairs before you.
âFavourite type of pancake?â He asks and you hum, your steps aligning as you descend into the kitchen.
âCan you do the one with the sprinkles mixed in?â Remus nods, and sets about getting the ingredients while everyone else busy themselves with cups of tea.
Remus makes yours for you, exactly like you like it, and Marlene eyes you over her cup of tea.
âBubbles, câmere a second?â She motions you both out the door and Remus and Sirius watch you both curiously while James and Lily cuddle up on the sofa.
When youâre outside and at the flowers, she fills the watering can and squeals, âWhatâs going on with you and Moony?â
You shrug, rolling your eyes as you take the full watering can and start watering the plants.
âNothingâs going on,â you say- which might be true. It also might not be true, because something is definitely going on; youâre friends but you feel like a little more than friends. Like youâre in the liminal space between friends and more than friends.
âOh yeah? So youâre just wearing his sweater and heâs spent the night in your room?â
You fail to hide your smile at her question and she laughs maniacally.
âI knew it!â
You stop her before she can get ahead of herself, âNothingâs happened, weâve just been talking and getting to know each other,â
âIn all the ways.â Marleneâs eyebrows dance at her statement and you shake your head- mostly to dispel heat from your face.
âNo, I asked him to spend the night in my room. He said yes, there was nothing else.â
Her eyes narrow, âNo âgood morningâ cuddles or kisses? You know youâre the only one with cute nicknames from him?â
You scoff, Marlene rolls her eyes, ââPretty girlâ, âdoveâ, youâve noticed only you get such nice names from Remus? Heâs not exactly as forthcoming with it to anyone else.â
You ponder it for a while, sipping the remainder of your tea as you water the last plant.
âI like that he listens and heâs easy to talk to. And I feel like myself- like thereâs no pretending when Iâm with him, but Iâve also known him for maybe four months at best.â
Marlene touches your shoulder, âItâs not like you to go all in all at once, and thatâs okay. Just donât rush to label four months as not enough time- if you like him, and you think he likes you; I know for certain he does, but I know you need to know it too, then let it flow yeah? Whatâs the worst that could happen if you just see where it goes?â
Before you can answer her, Remus comes looking for you out the front door, âBreakfastâs ready, dove. Come eat before it gets cold,â he says softly, âYou too Marls, before Siri passes away at the fact that youâve been gone twenty minutes.â
She sends you a pointed look as he goes inside, calling out to Sirius.
âWhatâs that look for?â He asks as he takes your empty cup from you.
âMarleneâs scheming,â you say with a smile and Remus groans.
âPlease nothing like her schemes that involve jumping into pools drunk again.â
You have breakfast right beside Remus, like the day before- thighs pressed together as you eat.
He doesnât have his own plate so you divide your stack between the two of you- which he only has a couple pieces of.
âRemus youâre having breakfast?â Sirius asks pointedly and you frown.
âDoes he usually not?â
James shakes his head, âMostly toast and coffee. Or clotted cream and scones when he can manage it- never really has an appetite in the morning, our Moony.â
You look aghast as you turn to Remus who looks sheepish.
âYou couldâve said something! And here Iâve been feeding you breakfast without a single thought.â
Lily and Marlene smirk at your concern and the boys roll their eyes at Remusâ bashfulness.
âSâfine, I wouldnât have eaten if I wasnât feeling for breakfast.â A lie. Remus would eat at whatever time you were sharing food with him. It wouldnât matter if heâd just come back from having lunch himself.
âNow I feel like Iâve forced you into having breakfast,â you say softly and Remus kicks the shins of both the boys and glares at them.
âNone oâthat,â he says equally as soft, still glaring at his friends who canât help but smile at your reaction.
Sirius and James ruin the sweet moment by miming a kiss to Remus while youâre not looking and then getting kicked again which makes them groan.
âAre we going onto the lake today?â Lily asks to change the conversation and it works perfectly.
You delve into quick, animated conversation about what your supposed plan is- pack a picnic basket full of sandwiches, some drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic), a pavlova (that makes Remus raise his eyebrow- a silent conversation passing through you both, you wave him off) and then head to the dock and get on the boat and find a nice spot to swim.
Remus helps you with the pavlova, cutting the fruit and making the whipped cream while you set it in the oven to bake.
âWhat kind of sandwiches did you want, dove?â You put the last of the dishes in the drying rack as you turn to find Remus getting the bread, condiments and toppings on the counter.
âWhatever you guys like. I just need one cucumber sandwich and one with tomatoes, meat, cheese and crisps.â
Remus nods and gets started, when you reach for the cling wrap he tuts.
âGo get dressed, I can do it by myself.â
âHow rude would that be? Iâm the host.â Remus sets the knife down after he cuts the sandwiches in halves.
âPretty girl,â he traps you between the counter and himself. Your chests pressed together. âI told you in the shops, youâre not cooking for us all weekend. Itâs a vacation for you too- go get dressed, do whatever you need to do, and then come back down when youâre done and ready to go, yeah?â
His eyes remain glued to yours, the intensity of his soft words bleeding into your veins and replacing your blood as it starts racing through you.
You narrow your eyes still, âHas anyone ever called you âbossyâ before?â You ask but still make your way to the steps.
âYour cookies are on your dresser, have a whole one if you like.â He says as you retreat, chuckling when you squeal happily.
James finds Remus stocking the picnic basket and approaches him with a smirk.
âYou like âer donât you, Moons?â
Remus frowns, âIâd like it if you and Pads didnât mouth off about me not liking breakfast and making her feel bad.â
James whistles lowly. âSorry âbout that. But you do, donât you? Like her I mean.â
Remus sighs, âYes, I suspect I do. Itâs becoming a little more than like rather quickly though.â
James shrugs and steals a crisp from the half done packet. âSânothing wrong with that. Told Lils I loved her like a month into dating- best decision I ever made.â
Remus wants to go back and forth with James about the differences between you and Lily, and then he realises, he really canât.
No one besides him, and probably Marlene, knows the situation of your home and how that factors into things- heâs better waiting it out.
Remus finds waiting it out might be extremely difficult when you come down in a sunshine yellow and orange bikini top and a pair of Jean shorts that reveal a naval piercing and a set of waist beads that compliment your skin perfectly.
Your hair is up in a claw clip, some pieces out and framing your face and your glasses are replaced with shades. Youâve forgone all your jewellery, but you still look stunning.
His heart stops for a second when he catches the scent of your toffee butter perfume.
âYou look like a sunrise,â is the first thing out his mouth and you giggle. A tinkling, windchime-ish sound that lights your entire face.
âThank you, Remus. Iâll set everything in the boat while you go get ready, thank you for packing the basket.â
James watches the exchange silently, more and more he finds the evidence that you and Remus are falling for each other to be extremely obvious.
Remus leaves with a kiss to your forehead and it takes all your self control not to touch your hairline as you pick up the basket.
âJames, do you want to be our captain for the day?â You ask as you open the sliding door.
âOh of course! Lead the way and Iâll take over the helm immediately.â
The moment you anchor the boat, youâre all diving in- except Remus who sits with his legs dangled in.
âMaybe when the sun starts getting a little lower,â he had said and you didnât want to force him to do another thing. Remus was much more content to sit and stare at you swimming and having a water fight with Marlene as he drank one of the beers from the cooler.
After about an hour of roughhousing, you paddle over to his legs and climb up beside him.
Dripping wet, you reach for a peach iced tea and one half of the sandwich with crisps and take a bite.
âWant your towel?â Remus asks as he notices gooseflesh erupt on your arms and legs.
âNo thanks, donât wanna get it sopping wet before itâs time to leave.â
You take another bite when Remus says, âIâd just give you mine, dove.â
It makes your heart sink and soar at the same time- the way he proposes going without just so youâd be comfortable. It makes you think of the way heâd been having breakfast just because you shared with him.
No oneâs ever been so nice, without expectations before.
âYouâre sweet Remus, but Iâm okay,â you lay your head on his shoulder as you finish off the sandwich and take a sip of your drink.
âCan I ask you something personal?â He asks softly, eyes on your friends as they start a swim race.
âYeah, course.â
Remus takes a moment to collect his thoughts, takes a moment to choose his words carefully.
âWhy doesnât Marlene know anything?â Itâs been something running laps in his kind since his conversation with James in the kitchen.
Your breath hitches and Remus is about to apologise when you start explaining, âShe knows some stuff. Like the stuff about me and my family not having a good relationship- sheâs seen some of the fights,â
You take another sip, âBut Iâve been careful not to have any visible bruises when Iâm with her. Itâs hard to explain,â you take a deep breath before saying, âAnd itâs a little embarrassing to have your dad still being abusive to you after being a kid.â
Remus nods, saying nothing for a while and then, âI hope you know itâs not a reflection of yourself and you shouldnât be embarrassed by his actions.â
You donât go back out in the water after that, instead you lay on the boatâs floor with Remus with your toes dipped into the water.
âCan I ask you a personal question, Remus?â
Your voice is soft, your hands occupied with tracing the silvery lines of his scars that race up his arms.
âAnything,â he says earnestly.
âWhat are your parents like?â He smiles, an image of his mum already in his mind.
âMy mumâs like me, quiet, shy, a massive reader. Sheâs very gentle too- I donât think Hope has a mean bone in her body. Sheâs a big baker like you are, sheâd love spending all day in the kitchen.â
You smile unconsciously, she sounds like Remus. âSheâs also very fiercely protective of whoever she loves. Itâs like pack animal loyalty with âer.â
âShe sounds like you,â you say quietly, turning to look at him and finding Remus eyes laying on you already. âGentle and kind; very warm.â
âAlright lovers, cut the pavlova and letâs crack some beers.â Sirius hollars as he boards the boat again, his wet hands reaching for his towel as he scrubs his hair roughly.
âYou have such a way with words, Black.â Lily says sarcastically as she helps you take the pavlova out and dress it up with the cream and fruit.
You all eat your bellies full on the boat, the pavlova and sandwiches done just as the sun begins to set.
Thereâs a lethargy that engulfs the boat as you take the helm for the return trip.
âJames itâs fine, youâre more tired than I am,â You say to him, his eyes are barely open and that reminds you that you havenât had your cookie yet. âRemus, can you get me the cookie from the basket? I forgot to take it when we got here.â
âThe edible?â He asks as he retrieves it from the picnic basket anyways.
âMhm! Thank you,â you reach for it with one hand as the other is glued to the steering wheel of the boat as you turn it around.
âMânot giving it to you while you operate a vehicle.â Remus says as he holds it closer to him.
âRemus, itâs a ten minute boat drive back to the dock.â
He shrugs, âWait ten minutes then, these are strong.â
You frown, grumbling under your breath at his strictness. âYouâre so stern and strict.â He hears you say it and smiles.
âYup, but Iâll make you a deal- you can have it if you let me drive,â you shake your head.
âYouâve already done enough for today,â Remus rolls his eyes.
âIâm also the only one of us that didnât swim today,â you falter then.
âCome over here and take it so I can drive,â he says but you shake your head again.
Remus decides heâd rather use intense flirtation tactics to get you to sit and have your cookie and continue relaxing.
His hand reaches for your exposed waist, his fingers stroking your skin there and then slipping under the waist beads.
Your breath catches in your throat.
âPretty girl,â he starts lowly, voice much more raspy than usual. The way he stares so intently at you makes your belly erupt in butterflies. âCome sit over here and have your cookie so I can drive us back, hm?â
Your friends watch you both with rapt attention, whispers of the two of you âfighting like an old coupleâ lost between the heat of his actions and the thrumming under your skin from his attention.
The calluses on his fingers tickle your skin softly, more gooseflesh raising on your skin as you stop the boat and get lost in his touch.
âRemus,â you mumble, your resolve already crumpled to nothing. âYou play dirty,â you say quietly as you switch places with him and receive your cookie with a dazzling Remus Lupin smile- which is just a quiet smile that shows his teeth.
âDonât know what you mean.â
You finish your cookie and your bottle of water just as Remus docks, your friends filing off the boat with their arms full of things as they go to the showers- all of you too tired for any other activities.
âYou good to be by yourself for twenty minutes, dove?â Remus asks as he helps you dismount from the boat.
Your eyes are already droopy, your movements more sluggish than normal.
âYeah, Iâm gonna shower and wash my hair and go to sleep.â You slur some of the words, your tongue too heavy for how fast you want to speak.
âSleeping by yourself tonight?â Remus asks kindly, closing the door behind you and locking up before you set the alarm.
âUm,â you start, stretching as you make your way to the stairs, âWould you mind staying? I like sleeping next to you.â Remus feels his stomach knot at the confession.
Your high allows your tongue a little freedom, âWhen youâre there I donât have nightmares.â
âIs that why you asked if youâd moved a lot?â
You nod, a timidity to you. âYeah, I usually wake up super anxious or with a massive adrenaline rush that takes ages to wane.â Then as if youâve only just remembered, âBut you can sleep in your room if you want an entire bed to yourself.â
Remus coos, âIâll share a bed with you again, princess.â
You wrinkle your nose at the nickname and Remus laughs, walking behind you as you climb the stairs.
âWhat?â He asks as you open your bedroom door.
âThat feels like such a pretentious nickname,â you admit and Remus shakes his head.
âWhat if thatâs what I think of you? That youâre regal enough to be a princess?â
You scowl, âI prefer pretty girl,â you say softly as you lay out your pyjamas on your bed.
âYou like the reinforcement of the truth?â He teases and you groan, rubbing your face as Remus laughs.
âGo shower Remus, youâre too much right now.â
Twenty minutes later, youâre putting away your blow dryer as Marlene opens your bedroom door.
âYou okay?â You ask her as she climbs into your bed.
âIâm perfect, Bubbles. Want you to do me a favour, though.â
You raise your eyebrows as you smooth oil through your hair. âWhat kind of favour?â
Marlene approaches you, kisses your forehead and whispers, âLet yourself fall for him. He takes care of you, you let yourself smile for real when heâs around. Four months donât mean a thing.â
She leaves just as Remus opens the door and he frowns.
âDid I interrupt something?â He asks gently, ready to call Marlene back and swap with her so you two can chat more and heâd stay with Sirius.
âNope, everythingâs perfect. Except for the fact that Iâm not asleep yet, Iâm beat.â
Remus shakes his head as he shuts your door, climbing into the bed beside you.
âOh are you?â You nod, oblivious to his teasing as you scoot closer to him.
âSo tired. I think tomorrow weâre going to start lunch late so I can sleep in some more.â
Remus lays still as you get comfortable, laying your head on his chest and draping an arm over his stomach. âSleep as long as you need, dove. The boys and I can cover the bar-b-que.â He has just enough time to plant a kiss to the bridge of your nose before youâre asleep. Remus canât help but sigh and squeeze you a little tighter to him as he relaxes under you.
-
The next morning youâre not awoken by the sun in your eyes or by Remus moving under you. Instead, itâs the rain beating down on the roof that rouses you from sleep.
Remus isnât under you, youâre alone in bed but the spot where heâd been laying all night is still warm and sunken- as if heâs just left.
Groggily, you pull your hair back and out of your face, move through your morning routine and trudge down the steps as you fit your glasses on your face.
âMorning,â you say to Marlene as you pass her by the breakfast nook, making your way immediately for a glass of water.
âHowâd you sleep?â She asks with a girn.
âGood, till the rain.â
She nods, Lily and James coming downstairs shortly after, âThis puts soup on the menu instead of bar-b-que?â James asks and you shrug.
âIf you guys want that we can do it instead, Iâd probably just need to run to the store and get the vegetables we might not have.â
Putting on the kettle you look around and find Sirius and Remus missing.
âWhereâs your lover boy?â You ask Marlene as you toss two tea bags into your mug.
âSame place as yours,â she teases. âTheyâve been hotboxing Remusâ car for the last half hour.â
You shake your head with a smile, âWhatâre we doing about breakfast?â
Marlene and James exclaim at the same time, âBreakfast hash!â
You and Lily look at each other, âLondoners.â She says teasingly and James flushes, pressing a sweet kiss to her lips before joining Marlene in getting the potatoes, eggs and sausages for the hash.
Remus and Sirius appear just as breakfast is done, their shoulders and hair wet from the rain as the walk into the kitchen.
Remus hangs over your shoulder, his cheek nuzzling into yours. The wet tips of his hair draw messy lines of water down your neck.
âSorry I wasnât there when you got up.â He whispers, you smile.
âSâokay, how was your smoke?â
âGood, need a shower though. Sâall stuck to my clothes.â
Remus goes and comes back in ten minutes, smelling more citrusy and minty as he comes to sit beside you.
You donât share half your breakfast with him as you eat, and he frowns. With a not so stealthy hand, he steals a potato wedge.
âThereâs still some in the pot,â James tells him but he doesnât get up.
Instead, he continues stealing off your plate with a smirk. When youâve finished, he takes your plate and fills it again, this time sharing with you.
âYou finish it,â you say to Remus, leaning your head on his arm as he eats.
The rest of your friends watch silently, eyes a little wide at how seamlessly you and Remus seem to be moving with one another.
âWhat kind of soup did you want to make, James?â You ask, directing your attention to him as he stacks Lilyâs plate in his.
âSomething hearty,â Sirius says, his own head presses against Marleneâs chest. âI want something hearty. Like beef soup.â
James chuckles and you smile, âBeef soup then,â he says and you nod.
âIâll probably have to get carrots, some more potatoes and the beef then.â
Remus hums, âIâll go with you, canât be driving in this weather.â
You roll your eyes, âYouâve just smoked, Remus. Youâre not driving anywhere,â you turn to Marlene, âWanna go with me? Lily you too?â
The girls nod immediately and you all rush to go get ready, leaving the boys at home to entertain themselves.
âSo,â Lily starts as you pull out of the driveway- Remus had moved his car out of the way and moved yours back so it would be easy for you to reverse out into the street.
âYou and Remus are getting cosy.â She says and Marlene screeches.
âThank you! Someone else sees it!â
You shake your head, âWeâre just friends. Nothing has happened.â
Marlene rolls her eyes, âBecause youâre not doing anything. He was eating off your plate at breakfast without invitation- might I remind you.â
Lily nods, âAnd heâs been extra smooth and affectionate with you! He never shared his clothes so easily- not even with the boys.â
You bite your lip and deliberate on their words. âWhat should I do then?â
You spend the half hour drive to the supermarket trading plans and tactics and by the time you enter the supermarket you have a clear game plan.
âDo you think itâll work?â Youâre not sure why youâre so nervous to put the moves on Remus, but your palms are sweaty as you hold the basket and the girls load it up.
âOh, itâll fucking drive him wild,â Lily promises. âHe almost lost his mind when he saw you in the swim suit, heâs going to proper well lose it when we get back.â
When you get back to the cottage, the boys are watching the game, all the dishes are washed and the kettleâs whistling off.
âWe got everything, who wants to start?â Marlene asks, dropping herself in Siriusâ lap, watching coyly as you carry the bags to the kitchen and Remus stands up immediately.
âIâll start it,â you say and he grumbles.
âYouâre not, go sit.â He takes the bags from you and sets about cleaning the meat and filling a stock pot with water.
âIâm serious, dove,â Remus says as you make it to the fridge to take out the onions and garlic.
âIâm just getting the ingredients out,â you say gently and Remus narrows his eyes at you. You set the stuff down on the counter, and when Remus turns his back you get a knife and start chopping.
âDove,â he says shortly, looking back at you as he sets the beef to brown.
âRemus,â you mimic his tone and he scoffs, walking towards you. âWhat are you doing?â You ask as he stands beside you, waiting patiently for you to finish chopping the carrots and onions.
âSending you to relax, because you canât seem to listen.â
He takes the knife from you and you pout.
âIâd feel better if I was helping you though,â you say to him all while batting your eyelashes.
Marlene and Lily had told you to amp up the banter and the teasing just to push Remus along a little.
âPretty girl,â he starts, but you hop up on the counter top and hold onto his wrists. You massage the thin skin of his wrist, Remus watches you with quirked eyebrows.
âCanât I just stay here? Iâll just watch you, I donât wanna watch the game.â
You blink slowly at him and Remus melts.
âGod, youâre a fucking minx arenât you?â He murmurs, moving his hands to hold the dough of your thighs. Itâs only then he lets himself take in your outfit and he swears his brain nearly short circuits.
Youâre in another pair of shorts, a much softer and breathier material than the denim ones, and a crocheted, purple bikini top. Youâve got your chains all layered and hanging between your boobs, crystals and turtles all hanging over each other, and Remus needs a minute to think about something else so he doesnât get a hard on.
âDonât know what you mean,â you pop a carrot slice between your teeth and Remus groans.
âSure you donât,â he narrows his eyes, hands squeezing your thighs as you swing your legs either side of his hips. âYouâre not as innocent as you let on, princess.â
You roll your eyes but Remus sees the way your body reacts to the nickname and smirks.
âIâm the most innocent,â you jut your chin to the stove. âDonât let your beef burn.â
Remus shakes his head, turning to tend to the stove. He feels your eyes track his every move, and canât help but feel a type of tingle trail down his spine- more so when you hop off the counter and fit yourself right behind him.
Your hand rests on his back, your fingers spreading against his spine making him shudder.
âYou need to take a walk, pretty girl,â he murmurs, adding the spices to the pot and covering it to start the simmer.
âWith you? Of course I do.â Remus chuckles and turns quickly, using his hips to angle you against the space near the fridge.
âWhatâre you playing at, dove?â His hands fall to your hips, holding the supple skin there as he looks at you.
You lift a coy shoulder, âNothing, youâre not a game.â
Remus smirks, âNeither are you,â you smile at the ease of his words. âBut, I know what youâre trying to do.â
You frown, eyebrows knitted together. âWhat am I trying to do?â
Remus leans into you, his nose brushing yours. The way you lean up into him is too natural, Remus wants to chuckle, but you smell like caramel, vanilla and something musky that makes you intoxicating. It clouds his head, especially when you tip your chin up and he gets an even stronger scent of it.
âWhat am I trying to do, Remus?â Your hands sling behind his neck, your fingers climbing and winding into the hair at the nape of his neck.
âRush my plans,â he whispers, your breaths mingling as he bumps your noses together again. He plays a mean tease and brushes your lips then pulls away the moment you try to meet him.
âYouâre no fun.â You deduce and he laughs, kissing the corner of your mouth as he pulls away.
âYouâve no patience, princess,â he pats your butt, relishing in your scowl at the nickname. âGo sit down or have a smoke- youâre banned from the kitchen for the rest of the day.â
âYou like to boss me around donât you?â You ask as you open the fridge and take out the bottle of passion fruit juice.
âYou like me bossing you around, donât play coy, pretty girl.â
Remus blows you a teasing kiss as you walk out the kitchen with the glass of juice and you decide that youâll be upping your game starting then on.
