TODAY IN HISTORY : HISTORY OF CHAMPIONS
2010: PRISONS KENYA MAINTAIN AFRICAN LEADERSHIP IN WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Ten years ago, the podium of the 2010 Women’s African Club championship have become all Kenyan when three Kenyan teams were ranked in the top three positions of the competition. Kenya Prisons wrestled it out against rivals of Kenya Pipeline after a four set game 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-10, 25-21) in the final match held here at Panditahadeo Hall in Mauritius on May 17, 2010.
The winners represented the continent at the FIVB Club World Championship in Doha, Qatar December 14- 21, 2010.
Another Kenyan side, Kenya Commercial Bank, trounced Bafia Evolution of Cameroon to win the bronze medal 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-18, 25-17).

Kenya volleyball fraternity is proud of Samuel Gacharira aka Petit for being among the top 10 finalists in Africa under Writing Best Column category during the recently concluded AIPS media awards.
AIPS is the international association for sports journalists.
Petit is a retired volleyballer who played for Strathmore University, Cooperative Bank and Nairobi Water.
He currently sits in the KVF Marketing Commission and often highlights volleyball stories in the Daily Nation where he works as digital sports sub-editor.

LOW TURNOUT MARKS THE 1ST LEG OF THE 2020 KVF LEAGUE
14th February, 2020 – Ruringu Stadium, Nyeri County.
Top tier teams that play in the Kenya volleyball federation national league descended in Nyeri County for the maiden leg of the 2020 KVF national league. Legendary Ruringu stadium will play host to the 3-day event that include the league matches, played on the 14th of February, 2020, followed by a 2-day national tournament sponsored by Rohto Mentholatum, Manufacturers of Deep heat and other related products.
This years’ National league is expected to run till July, paving way for the start of a new league format following the directive from the world governing body, FIVB that all National federations adhere to the FIVB format for all their leagues. The National Executive committee deliberated on the matter and adopted the proposal for the commencement of the new league, later this year.
Notably, the turnout was quite low following the late withdrawal of some teams due to various reasons. This meant that only a handful of matches were playable according to the fixture released earlier.

WOMEN
DCI VS KDF
DCI had to overcome the resilience of KDF in the first match of the day before bagging maximum points with a hard fought straight sets 3-0(25-18, 29-27, 25-14) win over their rivals.
PRISONS KENYA VS DCI
In their second match of the day, DCI took a set from 2019 KVF league champions, Prisons Kenya after going down 1-3(12-25, 14-25, 25-20, 18-25) to the Josp Barasa led charges.

AP KENYA VS PRISONS RIFT VALLEY
2020 league newbies Prisons Rift Valley got off to a slow start despite showing glimpses of high level play after going down 0-3(24-26, 18-25, 21-25) to AP Kenya in an entertaining match played at Ruringu stadium.
PRISONS KENYA VS EQUITY BANK /PRISONS KENYA VS FOREST RANGERS
In other matches of the day, Prisons Kenya fought off the challenge of Equity Bank and league returnees Forest rangers by beating them in similar set scores; 3-1(26-24, 25-17, 22-25, 25-23) and 3-1(25-21, 25-27, 25-15, 25-23) to bag maximum points from the first leg.
The second leg of the 2020 KVF national league will take place between 24th – 26th March, 2020 in Kisumu city.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL
CAVB open registration for the 2020 U19 Beach Cup
Cairo, Egypt, February 8, 2020- African Volleyball Confederation "CAVB" opened the registration for All National Federations to participate in organise the 2020 CAVB U19 Beach Cup, which acts also as a qualifier for the FIVB World Championship of this age category.
The World Championship will be hosted by Thailand September 1 to 6, 2020.
The African Championship is scheduled to take place May 5 to 10, 2020 to be in a line with FIVB requirements to qualification process and deadlines to WHC U19.
This competition is eligible for players born from 1st January 2002 and thereafter, and will be conducted by open registration up to 24 Teams as maximum.
Africa has a great chance to qualify a maximum of 9 teams per gender according to the number of NFs participating in the Competition, Africa could secure up to 5 Teams in the Main Draw and another 4 Teams in the Qualification Round per gender.

Pools confirmed for Tokyo 2020 Olympic volleyball tournament
Lausanne, Switzerland, January 31, 2020 – African Women's representatives in Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Kenya will be grouped in Pool A along with reigning world and European champions and 2016 Olympic silver medallists Serbia, two-time Olympic champions Brazil, as well as the teams of Korea and Dominican Republic will be in the company of hosts Japan, two-time Olympic gold medallists themselves.
Men representatives Tunisia will be drawn in Pool B with three-time Olympic champs Brazil ' three-time podium toppers USA, four-time gold medallists and reigning VNL champions Russia and the teams of Argentina and France.
The 12 qualified teams per gender have been split into two single round robin pools of six, with the top four in the standings of each pool to advance to the quarterfinals.
The teams were assigned to pools in line with the serpentine method, with hosts Japan placed in the first position in Pool A and the remaining squads ordered by their positions in the FIVB World Ranking.
Pool B of the women competition will show three-time Olympic champions China starting defence of their 2016 title, where they will compete against back-to-back VNL gold medallists USA, the most decorated team in Olympic history – Russia, 2018 World Championship runners-up Italy, as well as Argentina and Turkey.
Pool A of Men's competition features he men’s national team of Japan, 1972 Olympic champions, in addition to 1976 gold medallists Poland, the hosts will face 2016 Olympic silver medallists Italy, as well as Canada, Iran and Venezuela.
In the quarterfinals, each pool winner will meet the fourth-placed team from the other pool, while a draw will determine the opponents of the second-placed and the third-placed teams which will be from the other pool as well
